Ovechkin Milestone Thread - Countdown to 894

that actually strikes me eye as the best, HEALTHY, scorers of all time.

i hope Alex can keep up, but, barring injury, it should be expected that Crosby will pull away from him, and also end up with many more points as he is two years younger.

But, though i dislike Sid and his fans, i have to admit that what the two of these guys could accomplish, career-wise, is insane considering era, and also considering there was hoopla around the two of them from before being birthed onto the scene.

I cant imagine anything like this has ever happened, as they are soon to bury other argued tandems like Dionne and Lafleur.

Crosby could wind up top 5 in career points, and could maybe even knock on top 10 in goals himself.

Ovechkin could be the all time goalscorer and could actually end up top 10 in points, too

its phenomenal. i hope for it, and im glad ive watched them so closely all these years.

Ignoring the hilariously bad coverage by the Canucks on this goal, plays like these are why Ovi continues to score. He’s not really going to blow by defensemen any more but he’s gotten much more effective over the last few years at sticking his big ass in the middle of the crease and getting deflections and rebounds. Was kind of funny watching Petterson get run over by the tank, reminded me of his 50th goal against the Lightning a few years back when he scored in front of the net and trucked Braydon Coburn in the process.

Ok, over-adjusted :)
Calculation is fine, I just do not like it, OV got 62+58+37=157 adjusted goals for three shortened seasons.
Gordie got shitload of adjusted goals for those 70-game seasons adjusted to 82. Gordie got more seasons by playing those shorter seasons.
Its too much adjustments, prefer G/Game league average adjustment only.

Had the same exact flashback. Although Coburn is like 50 pounds heavier than Petterson. Ovi don't care:)

I don't mind it too much. Besides adjustments are just supposed to give you a general idea, not a precise measurement. It works.

The biggest problem with adjusting for Gordie is that no sufficient adjustment exists for WHA statistics.

It is amusing how every time I think Crosby is going to really pull away in points, Ovechkin goes on a heater and/or Crosby misses time. Anyone know how many days Ovechkin has led Crosby in points during their career? I feel like it’s 95% of real time.

It is a durability/longevity race at this point, and OV has been the healthier one and has one extra year on his contract. Will Crosby sign up for another two years after turning 38? Maybe, though I am not sure what for; if so, Crosby will end up with more career points unless he misses too much time.

That's what was supposed to happen from the start. The fact Ovy has led in points almost their entire career to this point is the oddity. It'd be funny as **** if the retired with the same point total.

Ovechkin's selfish play for majority of this career just throwing in goals isnt enough to get a top 5 maybe top 10.
took the guy like 12-13 years to figure it out before that it was just scoring goals and he doesnt even have to work hard for it he can literally post up and keep firing them. goals and cool and all but there's a major part of the game missing. will never place above Crosby imo

thats a list of wingers that Ovechkin should NOT have passed in assists inside of the next four seasons.

His lack of playmaking and backchecking gets overplayed hard - originally driven by detractors, but continued by those who dont consider the role of wingers - and largely as a comparison to Crosby.

Centers are first back and last out, typically, i think? They get assists off of winning faceoffs. A winger’s primary role is typically to drive the net, play the boards hard and score? I think this is true.

Regardless, one left winger in history (Bucyk) will remain ahead of Ovechkin if Ovechkin plays this season and three more and manages 30-35 assists a year average.

Jagr and Howe played forever and were also total all around beasts. Every other name on that list except Pat Kane played in very highscoring conditions (so did virtually every name that Ovechkin is likely to pass in the next four seasons)

Does he play like Crosby? Hell no. If he did, he likely would’ve come into the league as a center. Does this mean Crosby is the better player by default? Arguable. Could be so, I can see someone thinking that, for sure.

But I’d like to help drop the “Ovechkin cant pass/is selfish/doesnt backcheck” narrative if we can. He forechecks, drives, hits like a powerforward, plays like a winger, and his assists totals are actually elite amongst wingers.

so if what he has done is selfish and unimportant and clearly lacking a huge part of the game over his career why wouldnt other teams designate one guy to do those things. You say he just posts up and puts in goals as though every team in the league has a guy that could do that but that guy is off doing noble things. Ovi is likely going to break the unbreakable record or thats what it used to be called before people realize he might come close. THe last 5 years have seen his critics move the goal posts on that as well. Only on HFBoards can goal scoring being a negative thing. For Ovi being selfish he will likely finish his career top 50 all time in assists. Not bad for a non playmaking turret. He will also likely finish close to number 1 in hits.

They have flip flopped, notably when Crosby has ran into injuries. The difference in games played makes this expected, not an oddity. The fact that Crosby has maintained point pace with OV throughout their careers despite playing in 166 less games shows he has always been the superior playmaker.

We can prop OV up in this thread without tearing Crosby down folks. OVs accomplishments are impressive enough to stand on their own.
