Wait was Ovi at least out there for the open net then? i only saw the highlights of the game, and it looks like it was 4 on 4 that turned into a 5 on 4 with the open net and he wasn't out there before or after they tied the one goal with the extra attacker. Carlson didn't even get the hat trick... while Ovi might have got it in from his own zone
I was so pissed when Boudreau didn't have Selanne out there for empty nets on his quest to 700 goals during his final season... Ovi has already blown past 700, and if it's not going to put the team at serious risk of losing a game, f*** a dman hat trick and give Ovi every open net chance he can possibly get. It might not be the difference in him passing Wayner or not (I think he's going to do that no matter what) but it might be the difference in him and Crosby's career points totals/ or the slight, but still very real possibility of him reaching 1000 goals.

There were like 2 or 3 penalties in the final minutes of that game. Caps were technically shorthanded for a good chunk of it, and Ovi doesn't play in SH situations.
He did get a breakaway with Vasilevskiy in net with two minutes left in the game, but the puck hopped over his stick due to the poor quality of the ice.
Well I put Ovi's SOG rate as context and the poster you are replying too thinks its somehow me picking on him when it's really a statistical fact.
Don't worry the Capitals will give him the ice time and green light to shoot as much as he wants and if the other team has an empty net they will double down on it.

This is an obscure one, but Ovechkin was on the ice for the 844th powerplay goal of his career (regardless of whether he got a point on the goal or not). That gives him sole possession of 20th place all-time (12th among forwards).

What is with people on this website and their need to speak for other people? “Ovechkin is just a volume shooter” is one of the hot new stupid things to say about him the past few years and it is literally never to commend him. You can ask your boys @wetcoast and @daver if you have more questions I’m sure.
The history of the "Ovi is just a volume shooter" is a strawman created by the high noon decider.
It's pretty clear to most that Ovi has sustained his goal scoring by taking a heck of alot of SOG and isn't the peak player he was from 08-10 which is where the original miscommunication came from.
The high number of SOG is simply a statistical fact and if people don't think that it has been an advantage for Ovehckin then they are trying to hide from reality and the actual facts and overall picture.
i will never stop laughing out loud at the dirty diaper "he only scores goals because he gets so many chances" narrative to try to diminish his achievements. I truly, honestly thought that line of thinking was dead and buried but here we are.
As if other players are like "i COULD score more goals, but taking that many shots would just be rude."

High numbers of SOG are indeed a statistical fact. The issue is that you continue to draw conclusions on that fact, that aren’t reflective of reality.
You continue to ignore Ovechkins ability to generate SOG (that most players can’t), and how far he shoots from.
I’m willing to bet that Crosby passes the puck more than 90% of players in the league, are Crosby’s assist totals inflated because of high pass rates?

no one, certainly not me, says that he only scores goals because he takes a lot of SOG.
He is the greatest goal scorer of all time but the reality is that his focus has been on shooting and getting the goal scoring record and that affects his overall play.
