The era when it was just Crosby/Ovechkin, say 2006-17, was kind of meh.

Starting around 2017 when McDavid/MacKinnon/Matthews hit the league in consecutive years, with Crosby and Ovechkin still playing well and rounding out their legacies, we entered a true golden era. The past ~7 years have been awesome hockey even despite COVID interruptions.
There are also couple of guys worth mentioning, one is a German and another one happens to lead the league in points as of now.

I’ve been following NHL since ~2004, but I can’t fully agree that these times that are now are more beautiful to watch. In each time frame during last 20 years there was something spectacular.

Not only Sid and Ovi, but we were blessed to witness Geno, Kane, magic of Datsyuk and many others - all of their prime years brought lots of good memories. Sid-Ovi rivalry is just an icing on the cake, but it wasn’t the only thing to watch in the whole NHL.

Well, maybe I’m just old, but I really think it this way, that there were always lots of hockey to enjoy during last 20 years, it just happened to be different aspects of hockey, so it can’t be compared directly.

Not sure if it was mentioned, but Ovechkins last goal bumped him to the 10th most goals in a 38 year old season.

He has a good shot at 2nd place all time in this stat (which is 31, 1st is 37).
37 is definitely out of reach, but 31 is quite realistic.

People around here are really sleeping on Ovechkin's career assist milestones that are comming up. Ovechkin is only 1 assist behind his childhood hero Sergei Fedorov. And 2 assists from getting his revenge on former coach Dale Hunter, who many blame for ruining Ovechkin's legacy. And 3 assists from tying both Dave Andreychuk and Brendan Shanahan for 3rd all time amongst left wings. With 4 more assists Ovechkin will take sole posession of that 3rd spot, which must feel sweet as there was no love lost between Ovechkin and Shanahan...

Eh, around 2010 the majority of the action was shots through screens getting tipped 3 times before trickling over the goal line.

The game is simply better now. Faster, more skill-oriented, less hung up on trash play.

Mulletman, eagerly awaiting your next thread about Ovechkin deserving Hart consideration if he wills the Caps into the playoffs.

Do you feel safe going out on the ledge so soon?

Ovi is going to get his goals they are still giving him premium usage and sheltered MPG.

At ES he is huge liability at this point but this thread is about the goalwatch so let's keep it at that.
He's a liability to score goals that's right. You said that caps are losing games because of setting up Ovi Goals & giving him playing time, but they're winning despite selling out at trade deadline, so you go hiking. That's bad man.

We are not sleeping. The moment he took 5th place there was a post.
Top 5 LW all-time by assists (Top 14 among all wingers).
4 more assists and he will be 3rd LW and 12th winger all time by assists

This will be my last post here for a while but I never said they were losing games because of him I have been talking about his usage and PPTOI not matching the production but like usual people just plain make stuff up here.

Fair enough, like I said it became pretty clear a couple of years ago that the Capitals were going to do everything for Ovi to get the goals record.
I mean that’s just not true.. as you said “let’s skip the exaggerations”

I won’t argue the 5v5 criticism, he was horrific for most of the year

You keep obsessing over this idea. If they were going to do everything they could everything else be damned he wouldn't be playing alongside Strome and a bunch of non-names who were just in the AHL. They would have overpaid to keep the veterans around.

He could be 200 goals behind and his usage would be the same - HE. IS. OLD. REALLY. OLD.

im not bitching or anything but.. (and Ovie has improved of late and congrats)

Ovie has scored even this many goals only because of Dylan Strome, also he is one of the biggest reasons (with their goalies) why they are still in the play-offs.

Strome leads Caps in points (pace for 70 points), 2nd in goals, has dragged the Capitals
the entire season, been one of the best at face-offs this season in the NHL,
good two way game too.

Dylan Strome been the most underrated center this season
there are still lots who make fun of him... maybe after this season
those will eat some crow and shut up.

Dylan is an amazing elite passer with elite hockey sense, his shot is highly underrated as well.

Upcoming seasons, would not be surprised with 85 - 90 point seasons.

PS. He 100% is 1C
Strome played couple very strong games recently. In general it`s still very average guy for top-6. He struglled in collecting assist before winter paseed/spring started. For a while he had less helpers than Namestnikov from Jets bottom line. 0 assists in October and 2/3 of November

Passing Fedorov in assists is pretty impressive, even if it took Ovie a little longer to get there. Feds was a great setup man and played a long time to get that career total.

Passing guys like Andreychuk and Shanahan, even if they weren’t exactly assist machines, is also impressive in that those guys played a lot more games in a high-scoring environment.

So you will agree that before the break he wasn't all that good then right?
it?
Before the break he has an unnaturally low shooting percentage. Now that the percentage is normalizing his production has gone up.

I told you this before. You didn’t listen. Now look at what’s happening.

You’re not going to be shooting at 7 or 8 percent for long. It may happen over a season (though it’s uncommon) but it’s not going to last forever. Not for a premier sniper.

Weird goal, but they're all worth the same lol.

47 left to tie the record.

Ya I have to admit that I got suckered into it like usual but the facts don't change.

as for the saltiness there is no salt here I just believe in this weird thing called the trug=th and most people who do likewise just steer clear of the Ovi hype machine and hyperbole and I'll try to just watch the goals stack up and forget the embellishments of MJ and other non reality observations.

The reality sir is that the numbers actually back up the eye test but some just don't want to look there and make excuses.

Then again that has been the case for over a decade now, lots of goals and the other stuff has been overblown.
Do you have any milestones to post in this Ovi Milestone thread? No? Ok bye
