Gretzky was really slacking here

Cons

Consecutive or the total number?
If he breaks 30 this year he will have 18 total season of 30+ goals. Barring the covid shortened season where he scored 24 goals in 2020/2021 he has so far never scored less than a 30 goal season in the NHL but even in the covid shortened season he scored 24 goals in 45 games leaving literally zero question he would have also net 30 that season as well.

He would have set the record for the number of 50-goal seasons too if it weren’t for Covid. But it is what it is, unfortunately.

I've had this conversation before but if we're being serious about Ovechkins projected totals.

He missed a season as a rookie due to the lockout where his scoring prowess suggests he'd have been a 30 goal scorer after the rule changes in the NHL in 04/05. He missed a lockout shortened season in 12/13 where he was averaging 39 goals per season factoring in the 2 seasons prior and immediately after as well as his 32 goals in 48 games during. He also missed out in the two covid seasons which generously suggests he would have scored an additional 20-25 goals in the 42 total missed games

When we realize that Ovechkin has had a full missed season and 2+ shortened seasons it's easy to extrapolate the numbers and Ovechkin right now would be the title goal scorer in NHL history and would be chasing 1000 goals as opposed to 900.

Yes this is all what ifs and hypotheticals but knowing that Ovechkin missed over 60 goals scored (averaged out) it's kind of amazing and we've been blessed to live in an era where we have an Ovechkin, Crosby, MacKinnon and McDavid not to mention Lidstrom, Makar and so many other insanely gifted talents

Dude, I am a huge Ovi fan. You don’t have to sell this to me. But I am all for the factual records and not projected stats.

im not bitching or anything but.. (and Ovie has improved of late and congrats)

Ovie has scored even this many goals only because of Dylan Strome, also he is one of the biggest reasons (with their goalies) why they are still in the play-offs.

Strome leads Caps in points (pace for 70 points), 2nd in goals, has dragged the Capitals
the entire season, been one of the best at face-offs this season in the NHL,
good two way game too.

Dylan Strome been the most underrated center this season
there are still lots who make fun of him... maybe after this season
those will eat some crow and shut up.

Dylan is an amazing elite passer with elite hockey sense, his shot is highly underrated as well.

Upcoming seasons, would not be surprised with 85 - 90 point seasons.

PS. He 100% is 1C

Strome has been excellent this year, no question. I think it has gone both ways with those two. Without actually looking at stats, I would say that Ovie has set up at least as many Strome goals as Strome has assisted on Ovie goals. Ovechkin is an underrated passer. The relationship has been mutually beneficial.

The guy who's having the lowest-scoring season of his career is being carried by Dylan Strome? Is that supposed to be a compliment for Strome? Don't get me wrong, Strome has been great and has set up a few nice plays for Ovechkin of late and has probably been the Caps' best skater this season. But to say he's been carrying Ovechkin when they have not even played together at 5v5 in a long while shows that you probably don't follow the Caps very closely.
