Was at the game, sat on the 820 pucks throne, one more to be added!

Big man needs 73 goals to catch Gretz.

Based on the ages from quanthockey.com (in case anyone wants to check my work), Ovechkin has the record for most goals in a season at age 34, 36 and now at age 37.

Gretzky and Howe both lead five age categories. Esposito and Hull lead four. Ovechkin and Jagr lead three. Lemieux leads two.

Ovechkin has a good chance of taking several more of these categories depending on how long he plays (the current record is 37 goals at age 38, which you'd have to think he'll reach next year, as long he stays healthy).

God I really hope he keeps playing in NA long enough to hit 1000. I have no doubts at all that he can do it, and relatively easily. Just a matter of he wants to or not. Best player of his generation.
I mean, the guy is 37 and you expect him to easily score 180 more goals? I don't doubt he COULD do it, but that would more playing at least 4 more years at 40+ goal-a-year pace. That's insane.

He doesn't rely on youth/athleticism to score goals and can sit in his spot on the PP and put up 15-20 PP goals every year just on that, let alone the ES goals and empty netters. If he was open to playing until 45 or 46, which several other guys have done, he would easily get 1000 (that's ~25 goals per year).

More importantly, he also hasn't shown any signs of slowing down, with a 50 goal pace this season despite the Caps' lineup having a ton of injuries, him being banged up and his father passing. Why would anyone expect him to hit a sudden massive wall? Let's say he does start to slow down a bit though, 45 next year, 40 the year after, then 35, then 30, then 25 (age 42 season). I don't think he'd slow down that much but if he did boom he's at 1000 right there after his age 42 season.

FWIW, I do not think he will play in NA long enough to hit 1000, I think he goes back and plays a few years in Russia before retiring. He has stated he wants to do that after breaking Gretzky's record. BUT if he does want to stay here and has a goal of hitting 1000, it's really not that far fetched to think it's extremely realistic for him.

edit: also, to your last sentence I bolded. Everything about Ovi's career up to this point is INSANE. Why can't you believe that the insanity will continue? He's the GOAT goal scorer. I would never doubt him.

I said that I thought it could, but it would require him to maintain his level of production for 4 years.

It seems very unrealistic to me. But, hey, if one can it, it is him.

With regards to pure goal scoring, he's the best there ever was

If you can just stand in one spot for 90 seconds waiting for the puck, and every single player on the planet knows what you're going to do when you get it, yet you still rifle it home time and time again, that's just bonkers

Well you said it would require him to score 40ish for 4 years. That's not maintaining his level of production that's dropping off 20% in production. But your opinion is fair. I personally think if he wants it and wants to play long enough here 1000 is well within reach and not just "possible" but more "likely." Unfortunately we will probably never find out.

What's insane is he was like a day or two too old for the 2003 draft. Imagine him being a couple days younger and no 2004/2013 lockouts or Covid. If things were just normal he'd have an extra ~150 games on top of what he has now. Would be looking forward to 1000 instead of 895
