He honestly has not looked any “worse” than the last few years this season, could be a 30 goal season but could just as easily be another 40 goal

That’s fair, he is a bit more banged up than usual but he’s being forced to put up more offense for the team (goal share) than he has since basically his rookie season so it is definitely taking a toll on him

Up to 298 PP goals as well, closing in on a pretty big round number.

To me he has lost a bit of the drive that made him so hungry to score. I attribute this to the loss of his father and also the Caps not being a playoff team this year.

Ovi is still Ovi but obviously being out of the playoffs and selling at the TDL along with the passing of his father shifts the focus a bit. Still gonna score 40+ this year though. Would be nice to have someone else score 20 but Oshie us the only truly possible candidate. So when your goal lead is more than 100% bigger than the next guy and you're 37 years old you know two things:
1. You're good at hockey

After this season is done he'll need to average about 24 goals a season over the final 3 years of his contract to pass 894.

You would think it has to happen sometime but who knows... with the Capitals not in the playoffs this year he will get some extra rest and maybe Washington can retool a bit too
He'll likely score at least another 5 goals over the remainer of this season, which would take him to 70 goals away from the record. If he stays healthy I bet he breaks the record near the tail end of the 2nd ('24-'25) season.
He's has been scoring at a 49 goal pace this season. If he averages around 35 goals over each of the next 2 seasons he'll make it happen in 2 years (IMHO)

Let's not go overboard here, he hasn't had a 20+ power play goal season in eight years.

People can't let go of narrative in sports. Ovechkin has led the league in ESG more recently than PPG. He's been top 5 in ESG 12x in his career and if not for the missed games this season would be again.
