Basically pacing for 50 goals if not for missing those games. Incredible. I think he easily breaks the record in 2 years then goes and plays a few in the KHL before retiring. I really want him to stick around here though and go for 1000. Well within reach if he wants to play in NA long enough

He's got 3 more years on his deal. I think he plays it out. Hopefully he will break the record by then, and then he can retire or play in the KHL (unless he wants to play more in the NHL).

I'd be pretty surprised if he doesn't break the record in the next 2 years and I believe he has made comments about retiring from the NHL as soon as he breaks the record, but I could see him staying through his current contract then playing in the K. He has made several comments too about wanting to play in Russia again before retiring for good from hockey. Whether that's at age 40/41 or 43/44 I don't know. I hope we get to keep watching him here for as long as he can still play, which at his current pace will be for quite a while longer.

Please do not think this is a slam on Ovechkin, he is a great player. But I watched Gretzky get "shadowed" by players like Steve Kasper every second of every game and he still produced. When he got married he joked he expected see Kasper next to him on the alter in a tux.
No one "shadows" the greats in the NHL anymore, so curious how Ovechkin's (or anyone now) numbers would change.

Players aren't shadowed anymore because the NHL is more fast paced with higher scoring. No team is doing the '95 Devils trapping of the neutral zone or the Wings Left Wing Lock. Even Darryl Sutter adjusted his system from when he won Cups with the Kings.

The only player I remember to wear #78 was Pavol Demitra in Ottawa (before he switched to the more familiar #38). So we can use him twice.

A lot of teams use a guy standing next to Ovie for whole 2 mins of any PP they receive. They also do gameplan to defend Ovie, or McDavid, etc. That someone isnt holding their hand 60 minutes doesnt mean they are not being "shadowed". It would be useless to try to skate next to McDavid, as it was for Kasper to babysit Gretzky.

As for many suggesting Ovie goes to retire in KHL as soon as he hits the 895, im not sure anymore. Sure he might wanna end it with Dynamo where it all begun, but I dont think its as interesting as it used to be for him and that the timeline for that plan could have changed. The war has definately changed the KHL (almost all the good European players left) and its not even nearly as respected anymore as it used to be couple years back.

lmfao you really think over the however many years that Ovechkin has never been shadowed for full powerplays?

Jesus. That's a new one

Might have hit 50 if not for the missed games.

Still no big slowdown year for him yet... have to think there will be one sometime where he goes from 45-50 to just 30 but it ain't happening
