Is the shots on goal record an impressive feat? I mean I dunno. He'll end his career up on it by a wide margin. I just don't see this as great as other stats of his. 800 goals for example is more impressive to me.

Is your premise that there are people who value the shots on goal mark at the same level as the goals mark?

Because I can't imagine that's possibly true (certainly no one here is).

I imagine the extremists on either side could spin it either direction. Regardless, another all-time stat with Ovi’s name up top.

It’s impressive in the sense that SOG is the major second-level offensive metric, and the guy who was #1 before was ahead by a mile, and Ovechkin is going to end up another mile ahead of that guy.

Goals are the bottom line, but it’s still extremely impressive to be miles and miles ahead of any other player in history in shots.

Wow, who would've thought? D. Sedin was an excellent playmaker, not as good as Henrik (830 A in 1330 GP), but Ovechkin's playmaking is definitely an underrated aspect of his game
Ovi's first assist last night was an absolute perfect pass. I love that he goes full fanboy when his teammates score as much as when he scores.

In fact, I'll bet Ovechkin is on track to become the all-time leader in FBL (Fanboy leaps). Underrated advanced stat.

I think so. To be able to get that much volume at the net when you’re playing against the other team’s best competition night in and night out, and their game plan is to not let you shoot, having the most shots ever seems pretty impressive. Getting your shot off and knowing where to be on the ice and when to be there in order to be able to get a shot off… all of that requires not only a lot of physical skill but also a high hockey IQ. You can debate where on the spectrum this falls in terms of most to least impressive accomplishments but he’s still the best to ever to do something in a specific category, and his record won’t be matched or beaten for a long time.

Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Does anyone believe Gretzky (the guy with more assists than anyone else has points) was incapable of shooting more? To the tune of 2000? Or did he make more productive decisions?

Or maybe, as he got older, Gretzky had more confidence in his set up abilities rather than his ability to beat a goalie cleanly with his shot?

Or are you really trying to insinuate that Gretzky, the guy who coined the phrase ‘You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take’ decided to pass up good opportunities to score?

On the contrary, I suspect Gretzky recognized when his team was more likely to score (which wasn’t always with him shooting) and decided whether best to pass or shoot. If you do something 2000 times without result, it may not have been the most productive decision.

But there is a result. It’s got him to 800 goals in his career. Gretzky himself said “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

There is a reason why many advanced stats revolve around SOG as a key metric. It’s a proven recipe for success.

Gretzky was a playmaker first, he had an accurate shot but it wasn’t overpowering like Ovechkin’s. Both of these players made the best use of the natural abilities that were given to them.

Still wrong

OV has more goals then Mario and OV has been more consistent than Mario even at age 35+.

Mario did not averaged 50 goal per season after that age except for his return year.

Gretzky dropped off after the age of 31.

Also as amazing as Lemieux was in 2000-01, he was absolutely propped up playing alongside Jagr who at that time was the best player in the world.

MacKinnon would need to crush the games played record to stand a chance. Rough napkin math of Ov getting 330 SOG this season and the next two for right around 7000 career SOG. It would take ~1850 games at MacKinnon's current SOG/GM pace. And Nathan's not healthy enough to get there, IMO.

Matthews would need around 1800 games at his current rate.

So yeah, I don't think the shooter that can catch OV is in the league yet.

If they have long healthy and consistent careers they might be able to touch his ES shots. Nobody is going to get fed full 2-minute PPs where the strategy flows through the shooter entirely unless we get another athletic freak with an all-time shot that doesn't have to care care about sticks and bodies in front of him. Plus that guy would have to play pretty much his entire career with a Green/Carlson level point shot that can consistently burn you if you try to triple man Ovi.
