The thing is that his best individual playoff run was in 09-10 when he was still truly a force in his peak.

I never held the "he didn't win a SC" thing on him as it was a 30 team league and teams wins SC not individual players.

Like I said it was a well respected HOH guy who watches alot of film.

He won the Conn Smythe the year you're talking about. That's about as good as you can be in the playoffs. How is this not getting through to you?

I never said that he was exhausted, it was inferred by the guy that I'm quoting that he was flat and played with less emotion and interest than in the final season game chasing the record.

Now no one exactly knows what happened, sometimes home teams can come out flat after a layoff but it wasn't just another game but the SC playoffs.

That's just one example and I don't really want to go further down the rabbit hole other than to get back to the original outrage of the commentator saying that "Ovechkin was cheating on offense" which IMO is a fair way to talk about Ovi and his overall game and play for parts of this season.

Others like the guy I quoted initially will disagree and that's HF Boards.

Not only is it one example which makes it irrelevant since you can find those for any player, it is based of off someone watching the game and subjectively perceiving a player to be "flat" and playing with "less emotion". Something that is impossible to know.

And the notion of a player trying to get points/goals in a game being a bad thing is ridiculous.

Just stop, you can do better than this.

That's exactly what makes no sense. It's simply factually incorrect to say that "Gretzky scored 894 NHL goals", "Ovechkin scored 801 NHL goals", etc. Simply not true, or "NHL goals" is a misnomer and doesn't mean what it should mean.

Or take those YouTube videos, "every NHL goal Ovechkin ever scored". Well, not really! How can you make a highlight video like that and omit the most important NHL goals there possibly can be – those in the play-offs?!

Every North American league, perhaps, but definitely not in Europe. It just makes no sense.

I get your point but as long as all contestants are judged equally it's not really a big deal.

If you go back and look his 09-10 playoff performance was "better" in the pure sense of the word.

Just like other players have had "better" individual performances than when they won the Conn Smythe, it can happen.

"In the pure sense of the word". Lol. In 17-18 he won both the Cup and the Conn Smythe. The reason they have the Stanley Cup and the awards is to determine, wait for it...................who is the better team/player.

Well........not Mackinnonesque:

Geez...

Hes never scoring again, he peaked hitting 800.

Milestone numbers usually take awhile. Either way, after scoring goals 794-800 in the span of just 4 games, he was due to cool off briefly.

I think he passes Howe within these next two games before Christmas.

Which would be terrific because I remember late January 2023 was the projection for awhile.

Fair points but I guess my point is that there is a valid perception by some that Ovi cares too much about individual achievements than winning and it's not unfair to say that most other players wouldn't get the TOI and usage without the reputation which has surpassed utility compared to the past.
Who?! Who should be getting OV’s ice time right now? His ice time is not based on reputation.

That would be a question for the Washington Capitals coach, usually rookies are given sheltered minutes to developed not established superstars.

I understand why the Capitals are giving Ovi the sheltered MPG and why he gets so many prime opportunities to score goals as the record is something the owner is on record in chasing so there will be pressure on any coach to please the owners wishes.

How is OV getting sheltered MPG? He is playing against the opposing team’s best defense.

u do not understand. ovechkin with his style of play won the stanly cup, and he is going to continue to play like that as he did all the years before, the record now, just comes as a side quest.
any of ur critic regarding ovy chasing the record at the cost of winning can be answered with "ovy has a cup."

before ovy had a cup, people like u told us that he needs to change his game if he wants to win... he did not change, he won the cup his way - let the man play his game pls.

The Capitals won the SC that year not just Ovi and also his usage was more in line with usual top players at 60% offensive zone starts 5 on 5 he is up to 80% and that's probably a record.

They also as a team haven't advanced past the first round since that SC run and are unlikely to make the playoffs this year.

That being said I think he will break the record and in another thread we can talk about what it means historically and for Ovi's oeverall legacy.

80.4% offensive zone starts at ES, plays all day on the PP 5:28 MPG to answer your question.

Why? They're finaly getting healthy are 7-2-1 last 10 games and there with top 8.

In a certain way, this one used to seem about as insurmountable as 894. Ray Bourque’s lead over the rest of the field for shots was massive, close to a 20% lead at the time. Jagr was a guy you could imagine challenging it, and he didn’t come close despite getting closer than anyone else. Presumably Ovechkin will end up owning this record for a very, very long time.

MacKinnon would need to crush the games played record to stand a chance. Rough napkin math of Ov getting 330 SOG this season and the next two for right around 7000 career SOG. It would take ~1850 games at MacKinnon's current SOG/GM pace. And Nathan's not healthy enough to get there, IMO.

Matthews would need around 1800 games at his current rate.

So yeah, I don't think the shooter that can catch OV is in the league yet.

Is the shots on goal record an impressive feat? I mean I dunno. He'll end his career up on it by a wide margin. I just don't see this as great as other stats of his. 800 goals for example is more impressive to me.
