If they want to win, they should let Ovy score, because ''He's hurting his team by scoring goals"
You need to look closer at who is saying that.
He forgot RSL so Ovechkin has 929, on top of that has 98 goals in international championships

So total goals
WG = 1106
GH = 1071
AO = 1027 still playing

Not that it matters but where exactly are you getting 98 international goals for Ovi from?

I just checked back into this thread and I was wondering why there are 5000 posts about Wayne Gretzky rather than us just celebrating Ovechkin's achievement? If this Gretzky-guy wasn't that great a goal scorer, y'all are really obsessed with him.

I wasn't going to say anything about Gretzky, but I have to respond to this post:

You are very wrong.

Gretzky's goal scoring slowed a bit from mid-season in 1986-87 until September 1991 from its previous heights, but he was still pretty elite. From January 1987 to spring 1991, he scored 197 goals in 333 games, or 47 goals per season. His first three years with L.A., he averaged exactly the same -- 47 goals per 80 games. (And he was fourth in ES goals those first three seasons.)

Everything changed for Gretzky after the Gary Suter hit in September 1991. This hit wasn't an isolated thing -- he had suffered two back injuries previously, in March 1990 and in April 1990 (playoffs). The Suter hit evidently reaggravated those and definitively ended Gretzky's prime.

Every season prior to autumn 1991, Gretzky had paced for well over 100 ES points per 80 games played. To put this into perspective, a 100-ES point season has occurred 15 times in NHL history, and Gretzky had 10 of them. Nobody else has had more than 1.

Suddenly in 1991-92, he finished behind Ray Ferraro (!) in ES points, with a paltry 63. Approximately a 50% drop from his previous average, overnight.

The scoring environment in the NHL had absolutely nothing to do with this, as scoring wasn't dropping in 1992 or 1993 (actually went up in '93) or 1994 from c.1990-91 levels (or 1987).

Gretzky's age might have been a small factor, but he was only 30 when the Suter hit occurred.

Okay, I just had to clarify that...

Incredible how there’s always crickets after detailed thorough debunking posts like this.

Fair points but I guess my point is that there is a valid perception by some that Ovi cares too much about individual achievements than winning
Maybe this was true when he was younger. I didn't watch a lot of Caps games until around 7 years ago so I'm not really qualified to say much about it.

My observations are that he's very much a team player these last few seasons. I watch about 70 games a season and he is always cheering every team goal, every teammate's success, always encouraging etc. In their last game against the Leafs he passed to Mantha who had a wide open net and Mantha passed it back to him for the shot (he missed). On the bench afterwards Ovie clearly said "open net, you have to take the shot" to Mantha.

Time and time again people talk about how he doesn't play a 200 foot game, doesn't back check etc. Again, this criticism may have been valid a few years ago, but he just isn't a fast or strong enough skater anymore to play that way.

What you say is true but some guys have more of a team game than others and it's more clear.

A respected poster in the HOH section mentioned a year where Ovi went all out in his final regular season game against NJ to hit the magical 50 goal mark then was kind of flat in the first playoff game that year.

Still don't get it. He says "You are very wrong" but talking about points, while admitting goalscoring was droping well before Suter hit. All the talk was about goalscoring, not about points

I don't think he hit 50 goals that season and there must have been 3-5 days rest from last regular season game to first playoff game.

Sometimes people reach for anything to fulfill a particular narrative.

Lol the funniest thing about that is that was in 17/18... You know, the year OV had his best playoff run and the caps won the cup.

Now you're just making stuff up.

The reality is that Ovie insisted in contract negotiations that the Caps try to remain competitive throughout his new contract, which is evidence that he cares about winning.

"In their contract talks, Leonsis said Ovechkin made it clear he wanted Washington to be a relevant and competitive team while he was playing there.

"He's very cognizant of doing this the right way," Leonsis said while attending the NHL board of governors. "Alex said, 'I'm not gonna be a third-line guy playing 8-10 minutes a game [where you] trot me out on the power play and let me score my goals. That's not what I want to do. Promise me you'll keep the team competitive [and] a playoff team.' And he promised to come in shape all the time and not be fixated on the record but be fixated on winning another Stanley Cup.""

It's an NHL record, goals in the WHA are irrelevant

I wish! It's outright bizarre for North Americans to fail to count the most important goals of all – those in the play-offs! – as "NHL goals". They are most definitely NHL goals, because the Stanley Cup play-offs are a contest organized by the NHL to determine the NHL winner every season.

So to say that "Gretzky scored 894 NHL goals" is quite clearly false and misleading. NHL goals should be those scored both in the regular season and play-offs. Those should be the true milestones to celebrate, not some silly regular season number.

We can’t provide the help you need.

He won the Conn Smythe that year.. you think he was so exhausted from a regular season game played April 7th that it caused him to perform poorly on April 12th (5 days later, both games played at home)? And not of course the far more logical explanation that it was just an off night (if he even did, 4 SOG, 2 Hit.. which was basically his average for the postseason)?
