He won't want to play for another 2-3 years based on what crumbs he's dropped here and there.

I doubt he will even play in Russia when his contract expires next year... He will either retire in Washington or play 1 symbolic game in Dinamo jersey & retires there.

Malkin said he won't play in Russia & prefers retiring in Pittsburg.

Since Matthews entered the league, he has scored 30 more goals than Ovechkin. (391 goals to 361)

Age 18-27 seasons for Matthews and age 31-39 seasons for Ovechkin.

Prime Matthews vs Back 9 of career Ovechkin.

Prior to the season, I was fairly optimistic on Matthews’s chances at being a real threat to whatever Ovechkin’s final tally ends up being, but that was before Ovechkin soaked back 10 more goals on his lead while being 12 years older. It’s also starting to look like that he might end up with 940+, if he truly retires at the end of 2025-2026. If he plays longer than expected, forget it. 1000 would push it out of reach for a very long time.

Matthews needed to have 440 at the end of this season and Ovechkin needed to be at about 875 for this to be semi-feasible. It’s not out of the realm that Ovechkin hits 900 and Matthews fails to notch his 400th. A 500 goal deficit on a forward moving target seems like it can’t be made up.

Even if overall scoring hasn’t plateaued or god forbid, continues to start ticking down again, Ovechkin seems safe and will probably hold this record for as long as Howe and Gretzky did, combined.

If 10 more goals makes any kind of difference, then logically by your projections Matthews is going to miss him by what 50-100 goals at most? Realistically, at the end that difference is going to be much higher. 10 goals here and there are really not going to matter.

Matthews has 391 G after 610 games.
OV had 380 G after 610 games which include biggest slump of his career.
In the next 25 games OV added 21 goals, so he was at 401 in 635.
I think Matthews will be around 400 mark by the end of the season with 19 games left.

Auston's GPG advantage is almost gone now at same point of their careers.
Question is, can he be at around 50G / 82 games pace in next 11 seasons like OV? Will Auston play 900 more games?

No. What I meant by that was that Ovechkin should have been losing ground on his overall lead as a late 30s-soon to be 40 year old. Matthews needed to be flirting with 600 goals early in his age 30 season and that already seems much less likely.

It’s crazy to me how the advantage Matthews created last season was completely wiped out. If he gets to 31 goals this season there is virtually no difference between him scoring (50,50) the last two seasons than (69, 31) apart from the Rocket of course. I expect him to have a couple more historic seasons(60 goals+) but those will be cancelled out by down years when it comes to catching Ovi.

In addition to its scheduled live game coverage, through a cooperation agreement with the League, MNMT will produce its own MNMT broadcasts during the four exclusive nationally telecast games for archival purposes. MNMT’s broadcasts will feature play-by-play from Emmy Award-winning announcer Joe Beninati with color commentary from other recognized MNMT talent. If Ovechkin records a historic goal during a national telecast, MNMT platforms will release recorded video and audio of Beninati calling the significant moment and other MNMT talent reacting to Ovechkin’s achievement. The network will then air the full MNMT game broadcast for Capitals fans to enjoy on MNMT 24 hours after the national broadcast.

Even if he doesn't, as a Leafs fan it makes me really happy to even be having this conversation.
