And continuing on the subject of class & respect, I hope we see a repeat of this moment when Ovechkin scores #895:
Sincere thanks to everyone posting Ovi's eye-popping stats. As remarkable as they are, what I find equally amazing about Ovechkin is his sincere love for the game and respect for his peers. Two examples of why he's such a great ambassador for hockey. Seriously, what other player does this:
From age 30 and on until the end of his career, Gretzky scored 188 goals in 592 games.
26.0 goal pace over 82 games.
Since Ovechkin's 30th birthday, he's scored 395 goals in 686 games.
47.2 goal pace over 82 games.
EDM had 5 straight years of 400+ goals/season, w/80gm seasons that's above 5GF/gm average, just insane numbersThat 32 games of 7 or more goals for Oilers is staggering. Imagine Ovechkin or McDavid on a team and era like that?

EDM's 3 most recent 82gm seasons = 294/325*/290 GF (*led league)
1981-82: 417 = 5.21 GF/gm
1982-83: 424 = 5.3 GF/gm
1983-84: 446 = 5.575 GF/gm
1984-85: 401 = 5.01 GF/gm
1985-86: 426 = 5.325 GF/gm
Im not familiar with this "ovi did not have a chance to play in the NHL" was it impossible, or was it by choice? We could also split before age of 20:
Gretzky had 76 goals in 126 games, 49.5 goals pace over 82 games
Ovechkin did not have a chance to play in NHL
Between 20 and 30:
Gretzky 630 goals in 769 games, 67.2 goals pace over 82 games
Gretz had typical trajectory for goals scorers magnified by his talent, team dominance and era scoring levels.
OV is unique player and top 10 all-time just because there is no one else like him.
It would be interesting to know how much lower Oilers goals would have been without Wayne, and a decent player instead.Yes that’s a drastic difference

another angle to this is that when scoring is higher, ie. Gretzky's heyday, his ratio over #2 could be the same as Ovechkin's, but the raw gain over the field by your metric would be higher. ie. Ovechkin gets 60, next gets forty, he gains twenty. Gretzky gets 90, next gets 60, he gets thirty, but its the same accomplishment over #2.Ovechkin scored much more than everyone else too:
Season # Gretzky G 2nd after Gretzky gap Ovechkin G 2nd after Ovi gap 1 51 56 -5 52 56 -4 2 106 119 -13 98 100 -2 3 198 183 15 163 146 17 4 269 243 26 219 189 30 5 356 294 62 269 230 39 6 429 352 77 301 261 40 7 481 413 68 339 298 41 8 543 451 92 371 309 62 9 583 451 132 422 310 112 10 637 451 186 475 339 136 11 677 474 203 525 361 164 12 718 498 220 558 382 176 13 749 538 211 607 411 196 14 765 583 182 658 446 212 15 803 617 186 706 462 244 16 814 629 185 730 486 244 17 837 664 173 780 517 263 18 862 696 166 822 550 272 19 885 708 177 853 592 261 20 894 708 186 870 602 268
Also adjusted Ovechkin's record is off the charts, no one else is even remotely close.
