Funny how all the most “durable” players are all floaters. Kessel, Marleau, Kane, Ovechkin, etc.

Amazing what not playing defense, battling along the boards, or blocking shots will do for one’s durability.
Putting pucks in the net is the best defense you can ask for.

Do... do you think Ovie is a floater who doesn't battle along the boards?
I have a buddy, Crosby fan to be fair, who sounds just like the guy you responded to.

I say what you have said, in one form or another, well i have been saying it for fifteen years.

Ovechkin plays the offensive zone HARD, especially when he was younger. No, he isnt a big backchecker, but I want my wingers forechecking and hitting and my centers playing the 200ft game. He is playing the role that makes the most sense for his skill set.

Right!? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills sometimes. I know Ovie isn't perfect in his own zone. Controller disconnect bla bla bla. But the guy is not a perimeter floater, and he absolutely digs in the corners. The guy is a truck in the offensive zone.

Not many talking points left for them:
16P in 12G, balanced G/A, just 1 ENG, +10, just 18:11 mins per game with less than 20 shifts per game (12th on Caps)
Narratives destroyed, inevitability settled...
I also think part of it is they were hoping he had 1 or 2 goals by now with the Caps at the bottom of the standings. This way they could tell us he is washed and the Caps live to only get him to 895.

I get the feeling his haters aren't happy at the moment.

Man, I've see that clip 100 times but just the hit. I didn't know they scored on the turnover as well.

See above. Yep, total floater. NObody tries taking Jagr on like that. If I tried I would be in the hospital for weeks. It's damn near impossible to put Jagr on his ass like that. Ovie is 3rd all time in hits.

Speaking of Ovie haters. What ever happened to the Canes fan that was ALWAYS in here, Ovie's #1 hater. Did he like, exit stage left? Get the ban hammer??

Capitals have the 2'd best 'Winning %' in Eastern Conference & will most likely make Playoffs again with Ovi as a key player.

I wonder how many times Caps missed the Playoffs with Ovi in his 19 NHL seasons? Very few times i guess.

I'm gonna guess 3 times without researching it with one being his rookie season

Floaters don't have 3304 career hits (first two seasons hits weren't recorded, so likely add 450 more hits to his total). They don't have half the seasons they've played where they made 200+ hits.

It's utterly insane that a man who is going to break the all-time goals record also has made well over 3000 hits. Compare that to other ultra-elite goal scorers of this era. Those milk drinking primadonnas don't even have career averages of over 1 hit a game. They must be lazy floaters too, eh?

Ovi in his prime was a wrecking ball in addition to being an elite goal scorer. Russian machine is strong and doesn't break.

I think his style has helped a lot too. He's obviously a physical force, and loves to throw the body, but he takes shockingly few hits for a guy who throws so many hits. In fact, in the last 3 seasons, nobody has a higher ratio of hits given to hits received (>1,500 mins).

View attachment 927259

He's received only 1.46 hits/60 in the last 3 seasons, meaning he gets hit less than once every 2 games. The only forward in the sample who took less hits per minute than Alex Ovechkin was the late great Johnny Gaudreau (1.33).

That doesn't make his longevity and durability less impressive, but it definitely helps when you're 6'3 240lbs and taking less contact than guys like Patrick Kane and Artemi Panarin lol.

I wonder is it result of Ovi being good at avoiding hits, or players avoiding to hit Ovi for some reason (respect, getting bounced, making him angry)?

It is 3665, they started counting in 06-07, after his first season

Four. They missed it his first two years.

And because everything is Crosby vs Ovechkin, if the Capitals make it this season and the Penguins miss again, they’ll have both missed the playoffs just four times in twenty seasons.

Longest drought during their tenures are those first two seasons of Ovechkin’s career and three in a row if the Penguins do miss.

Crosby missed it 4 times already, first 2 and last 2.

I will be forever salty that the Hal Gill goal didn't count.

No, just his rookie season and the last two so far.
Yeah, my bad, hockey-reference got me confused with this table
(they track playoff extra/possession stats from 07-08)
