I hope he gets to 100 empty net goals just to piss people off. I hope other teams just pull their goalie when the score is big against the capitals just so Ovi can cash in on an empty net and piss some of you off.

Gretzky still has more empty net goals. It's real close now. Do we really care which of them has more empty net goals when it's that close?

Will it really matter if he finishes with 915 career goals with 65 of them being ENGs?
No it won’t. He will have the record and I will applaud him for it.

It still won’t change my mind about the context though. Brett Hull has like 11 empty nets because he hated to pad his stats.

If a team gets blow out by Washington they should pull the goalie with 5 minutes to go and give the puck to Ovi so he can score like 10 goals to help recoup the BS miss time he has dealt with. If he was 2 days older he would of had another 82 games on top of the lockouts and covid.
One could throw what if "ifs" into every single players career. Including Gretz , Jagr, Howe, Bossy, Lafleur, Neely etc

Even so you would hypothetically have 850 career goals versus 730 career goals when you remove ENGs.

Yeah. Context. Games. ENGs.

The fact that OV is now arguably a sheltered/PP specialist kinda ruins it for me. It is not what I wanted to see but I still respect his achievements.

Disagreed completely. ovies defense in these situations is suspect. the only reason he is out there is to bag easy goals to keep him happy and chase down the record. the coaching staff and management think that is more important than if the caps lose a game once in a while. its an understandable move by the caps. anybody saying else is just kidding themselves massively. just keeping it real here...
Completely disagree with this. Sure. They want to keep ovi happy but the goal is to win games. You really think the coaching staff would risk their careers, now or in the future. It's a professional company with the goal of making money. You do that by winning and staying relevant. Of course they want ovi to get the record but I guarantee every player/coach/video guy/trainer and so on cares a lot more about trying to win games then whatever ovi is doing.

Yeah, Bobby was good and so was Bossy.

Had Bossy done it for more games, I would have said him.

I still think Brett Hull was and is the best pure goal scorer of all time. He did it for long enough and there was no padding, just skill.
I'm amused that someone in a thread where people have bitched for hundreds of posts about Ov just standing around waiting for a one-timer would then try to argue for BRETT Hull being a better goal scorer. That's just.... *chef's kiss*

This is stupid. Carving out a role in his old age where he’s still producing should be commended not criticized.

Hull was even more of that by the end of his career.
Everyone gets older sure, but I don’t see BH as “even more of that”.

Without empty nets:

BH scored goals at a pace of 0,58 goals per game.

OV 0,57 goals per game.

The both have done it for 1000+ games.

So stating that BH shouldn’t be part of the conversation isn’t very credible.

The owner said they would do anything in their power to help OV get the record.

If that is what the boss wants…

It’s not anyone’s problem but your own, that you have issue that a 37 year old has managed to adapt his game as he has aged, to remain an effective scorer. Very few can, and none have done it so prolifically.

Nothing closes out one goal games like an empty netter. That equals 2 pts and accomplishes the team goal for the evening.

Brett Hull himself probably doesn’t even think he was better than Ovechkin Lol…

The skill to score an empty net = skill to score a goal?

Ok 👍

You don't need to do that. Just show gpg after 30.
Sure and if you only count odd days too while you are at it.
