I don't think injuries are going to be much of a factor. He has his cup, and he's now in full-on record-chasing mode. I don't see him gutting out a backcheck, going into the corners, or blocking shots. Mostly just coasting to his spot waiting for a one-time feed. They could basically Weekend at Bernie's him out there and he'll get his goals.
I don’t mean this to sound snarky so don’t take it that way but do you watch Ovi play regularly? I ask because he does all of those things more now than he did in the beginning of his career. And the Caps PP was 23rd last year, so he’s not just feasting off of one-timers.

Part of what makes him so dominant has been his ability to adapt. He still has his one timer but he also goes to the net a lot more than he used to and gets a fair amount of “garbage” goals. There’s really nowhere in the offensive zone that he isn’t scoring from these days.

As a long time Caps fan, I think there's a narrative that Ovie is a one trick pony. If you don't watch the Caps regularly, it's easy to parrot the narrative.

No one will ever claim his defensive game is even average, but he plays more defense now that he has in the past and he has definitely spent more time of late in front of and charging the net than he has in the past.

No snark detected. :)

I think you misunderstand my meaning, though. I was only speaking to the potential for injury. And that is heavily influenced by one's opinion of the Caps' competitive window. I think it's closing, but you may be more bullish. The org has stated that they're fully supporting his chase for the record, and to my mind, that means keeping him out of harm's way and ensuring that he stays healthy as his body becomes more susceptible to injury.

That’s fair. It’ll be interesting to see how the Caps do this year. They earned 100 points last year and I think they’re a better team this year. Strome will be an upgrade to last year’s Backstrom who couldn’t skate, Keumper is a huge upgrade in net over Vanecek and Samsonov, and Connor Brown should fit in nicely and then provide solid depth when Wilson returns. Eventually they’ll regress but I don’t think it’s this year. Could be wrong of course.

The capitals were 8th in goals for last year. The blue jackets were 14th and didn’t even sniff the playoffs. You’re conflating Ovechkin and the capitals scoring with playoff position which is irrelevant.

Ovi has to score 115 goals in 4 remaining seasons to break Gretzky's record. That's 29 goals per season.

Very reachable. Especially if he scores 40-50 next year.

Better in selective shots? Yep.
Better goalscorer is clearly Ovechkin: 9 goalscoring titles vs 3; 8 top GPGs vs 6.
All good points
I still take Mario over OV down by a goal with a minute to go.
Stamps and Draisaitl too
