Ovi should easily score the 22 goals necessary to surpass Howe this season. He'll need 2 40-goal seasons and one of 35 to pass Gretzky.

I'm rooting for him to break Gretzky's record, but I certainly wouldn't be betting on it. It's inevitable that a guy never known for off-ice dedication will soon be visited by Father Time. Ovi turned 37 yesterday.

If he does break it, let's hope he's still a viable player, not a broken-down travesty of himself, desperately hanging on to score a few more goals. I suspect he has too much pride for the latter.

I think he gonna score 40 next season.

Almost there to start tracking OV milestones again.

In meantime one milestone which was not covered, I believe.
According to nhl.com OV has most hits in playoffs (they have stats only from 05-06 season, though)

1. OV 629 in 147
2. Orpik 611 in 156
3. Kunitz 530 in 178
4. Chara 493 in 200
5. Lucic 487 in 136

Not surprised at all. Too bad it doesent matter since hitting is not an important part of the game.

You must be new in hockey, it's a physical game, hits are very important part of the game.

I was being sarcastic. I think that aspect of his game and how unique that makes him on the all time list of top goals/points leaders get overlooked tremendously on these boards. People here throw ppg averages at you and all of a sudden ovi is not even in mcdavids tier anymore. Its ridiculous.

I keep bringing up this lesser-known record. Ovie is really close to Gordie Howe's record of most goals for a single franchise. 786 with the Red Wings.

Ovie has 780 now.

Pretty soon this coming season, Ovie will have scored more goals for Washington than any player has ever scored for a single team.

Not surprising. For years, Ovechkin has been hitting less in the regular season and coming out much more physical in the playoffs.

Since 2016, his hits/GP is like 2.41 in the regular season and 4.37 in the playoffs.

The difference is noticeable from just watching the games, probably a smart strategy given his circumstance.

Crazy that the moment is finally close. Obviously, Ovechkin needs 22 goals to pass Howe and sit in second place.

Looking at the schedule, it’s possible he could do it by the end of 2022, which is up to Game 39 against Montreal on 12/31/22. Even if we factor in him falling off his pace a little bit and missing some games, it really appears he’s going to do this no later than mid January.

Let’s see if he can do it against Howe’s Red Wings in Game 34. A superhuman effort of 22 goals in the first 24 games would see him pass Howe against Vancouver just as Gretzky did in 1994.

However it happens, there’s mere months left.

Curious to know if anyone thinks he won't do it. I think it's impossible he won't get the record. He seems ageless, he's practically injury proof and just had a 50 goal season in his mid 30s. What could possibly stop him?

edit: meant to say injury proof, not injury prone

What's wild is to think/remember when early Ovechkin was basically playoff Ovechkin all the time.

I don't think he'll do it. He's been durable but he's never been 37+ before. Injuries and general fading of strength/speed/hand-eye coordination are all very likely. He'll drop off big-time soon.

He needs three 30 goal seasons and Washington has stated they'll help him get it done meaning it's very unlikely he'll be shuffled to a support role like must aging veterans. I would bet the farm on it myself.

I don’t want to jinx him (obviously), but no one is 100% injury proof. Aside from that though, nothing will stop him from getting the record.

If he can make it to 895 on the Caps thats probably gonna become the most difficult record to beat.

I mean, most goals in the NHL history on the same team ? Aouch

Yep. It's an underrated feat that he's such a good goal scorer, while also staying with one team. Washington fans have been crazy lucky to have him on the team this whole time.
Lots of credit should go to GMGM and Ted Leonsis for that 13 year contract he got after his entry contract. That turned out to be an amazing deal.

Also, credit to the Caps for supporting Ovie through the "down" years.

I don't think injuries are going to be much of a factor. He has his cup, and he's now in full-on record-chasing mode. I don't see him gutting out a backcheck, going into the corners, or blocking shots. Mostly just coasting to his spot waiting for a one-time feed. They could basically Weekend at Bernie's him out there and he'll get his goals.

That got Brett Hull into the HOF.

I hate GMGM for other reasons (not surrounding Ovechkin with the right pieces for over a decade), but the 13 year contract was a gamble that paid off big time.

The 5 year deal started out amazing too, few people anticipated Ovi scoring 50 in the first year of that deal.

As long as he can play at a high enough level where he is still able to produce on the powerplay for another 6 seasons, then it's really only injury that can stop him. Jagr, who wasn't as good of

OV is the greatest player ever cause goals are the only thing that matter.

People who don’t understand that there are more assists than goals in a game don’t understand the value of goals.

As OV climbs toward 895 we should be on alert for serious debates about a ‘big 5’

Did I miss anything fam?
Yea math class.

Gretzky 894 goals

Ovechkin 780 goals

Give Ovechkin 7 other hall of famers, let's see how he does.

As it stands, Ovie has only ever had 1 (Nick Backstrom) unless you want to count 38 and 39 year old Fedorov.
Flip side to that coin.

Kurri would never hit 70 goals playing with OV.

And Lowe aint in the HOF if he played on any other team.
