Ovechkin milestone thread - 850 and Beyond!

It’s almost 36 hours later and I still can’t get over the disrespect for Ovechkin to score a powerplay goal with his team already up three in the last minute. Never have I seen such a rude mockery of an opponent before. The Devils were absolutely heartbroken. Little Luke Hughes cried the entire car ride home screaming “it’s not fair!” and had to be calmed down by his mom. Older brother Jack Hughes stayed silent, simply stating he “didn’t want to talk about it” but the next morning told his parents that he didn’t want to play hockey anymore. Never have I seen such a cowardly and gutless act. For shame Ovechkin. For shame.
Made my day, perfect

As much as i don't want Ovechkin to break Gretzky's record, I'm 100% sure he does it.

He had the worst possible first half you could imagine, and yet, he's still gonna pot 25-30 goals.

He's such a streaky goal scorer that when he's on, he can literally score at will.

a couple bodyguards were enough.
You don't think Ovie would have needed enforcers surrounding him in the 80's and 90's?

Brashear and Erskine were two teammates during Ovies prime btw. Were they dressed for their point producing capabilities? Gretzky had Semenko and McSorley, so that is eerily similar come to think about it...

You're proving the point. 700 assists off rebounds would be literally the luckiest career in NHL history.

Ovechkin is No. 2 all-time in game-winning goals, 35 more than Gretzky and a higher percentage of his total goals. Considering he played in a way lower scoring era with more parity and not on a team of Hall of Famers, I'd be willing to bet Wayne scored WAY more goals when games were out of reach.
Just for context Ovi has 26 regular season OT goals and Gretzky has 2 due to the rule changes.

As for the assists thing Esposito has 813 and he wasn't a great playmaker by any mean either.

Ovi's ticket to greatness mostly revolves around his goal scoring and after the age of 25 his assists and/or playmaking however one wants to look at it wasn't of any all time importance.

Hence that's why this thread has a goal scoring title as he is too many including myself the greatest goal scorer of all time.

Ah yes Gretzky's teammates definitely didn't want to help him pass Gordie Howe. And they definitely didn't think about how amazing it would be to be part of surpassing a herculean NHL record.

Teammates Happily Join Gretzky’s Chase

By JERRY CROWE
Oct. 6, 1989 12 AM PT

As Wayne Gretzky embarked anew Thursday night on his pursuit of Gordie Howe’s National Hockey League scoring record, his teammates looked forward to sharing the experience.

“I think, if anything, it will help us,” defenseman Marty McSorley said. “When great things happen, you can’t help but enjoy it and feel a part of it, especially if it’s something as big as this.”

...

“I remember watching on TV that one year (1982, Gretzky’s third season) when he beat Phil Esposito’s record for goals (with 92 in one season, 16 more than Esposito’s 11-year-old record). I couldn’t believe it.

“But being there on the ice--or on the bench--is going to be something. It’s a tough feeling to describe. You just say, ‘Wow, how could he keep doing it for so long, every year doing the same thing?’

...

“He’s the type of player you want to help achieve those goals,” Robitaille said.
...

“I’ve played with some great players--Phil Esposito, Carol Vadnais, Barry Beck--but obviously Wayne’s in a different class,” Laidlaw said. “Obviously, the ultimate is to win the Stanley Cup, but to be a part of things like this is something you can talk about 20 years down the road, when you’re sitting out on your front porch in a rocking chair.”
It is very different helping out a guy close to a milestone while beeing a productive team gunning for the SC, and focusing on trying to get a guy to a milestone within 3-5 years, while seemingly not doing much else a team. I've already stated that though, so you could have saved yourself some time...

The Caps have become synonymous with Ovie's chase, and that's why he's been out there chasing easy goals with 30 seconds to go for a few seasons, while neglecting defense.

Not likely. Certainly not to the level Wayne was protected.

Ovechkin weighs about as much a Lindros. He would have been a man among boys in the 1980/90s. And its not like players haven't tried taking runs at Ovi. That never ends well for the opposition. The dude is a truck.

Ovechkin is a big boy and known for throwing massive hits, he doesn't need an enforcer and wouldn't need one back then either. But every team had a few anyways, but he's not a guy who would need protecting, if Ovechkin was allowed to throw head shots and blindside hits like in the 80s/90s, it's the other teams that would need enforcers to keep their guys safe. We've seem him absolutely obliterate people with hits, just imagining him throwing hits with the older ruleset, he would be handing out concussions left right and center.

An empty net goal ends the game and he can put it in from anywhere on the ice. What's the issue?

If Garnett Hathaway had scored a relatively easy empty net goal in the 2022 playoffs the Capitals would have advanced past Florida.
The Capitals lost that series 4-2 so putting the blame on Hathaway seems...I dunno not very logical?

There is logic to it, actually. Had Hathaway scored that emptynetter, the Caps would have taken 3-1 series lead with game 5 at home. Of course, there was no guarantee that the Caps would clinch, but the Panthers would have been in much deeper hole.

I nearly broke my finger scrolling down through all those tables with "stat padding goals" to find Ovechkin way at the bottom :DD
But the tables were useful to confirm my usual grievance that Ovechkin very rarely pads his stats during blowouts. Even in his peak days, it was so often that Caps would win 7-2 and then I looked at the boxscore and Ovechkin had one lonely assist as if there was no Art Ross trophy to win. He is sort of genuinely disinterested once the team is up by 3 or more and just skates around. Even this Wednesday, he tapped the puck in for the second goal and looked sort of bored.

Pretty much this. Under the old rules, Ovechkin would have been very Howe-like. He even asked Brashear to teach him how to fight when he came to NHL, but the coaching staff talked Ovechkin out of it. In the 1960s and 1970s Ovechkin would have fought and elbowed people, would have taken knees out. He is not mean, but even 10-15 years ago we saw him fly off a handle a few times. Had he got "way to go" for that instead of suspensions, he could have developed a scary streak in him.

% Goals when team leading 2 and more Goals. (Seasons 1917-18/2022-23)
On the flip side OV had (279+143)/836= 50.48% of his goals when Caps needed a tie-the-game or go-ahead goal.
For Gretz it is (214+139)/894 = 39.49%

No knock on Gretz, he played on teams which often blew out games (which he was the main reason to begin with his playmaking)

It is just funny to read old timers, who remember Gretz very well (and OV not so much), to knock latter for "stats padding".

Nah you were proven wrong and now you're playing semantics to save face. Classic internet forum move but everyone else reading this thread sees it and knows.

If the Capitals solely cared about the goals chase they wouldn't be fielding a roster loaded with young unproven players, they wouldn't have correctly given up on a pointless playoff run last year gathering assets, and they wouldn't have hired a completely unproven coach from the AHL. They wouldn't have given up a guy like Dmitriy Orlov who can feed Ovechkin on the PP etc.

None of that says Gretzky at all costs. Should any of that change, we can open it up. They had a 15 year run of winning and the window is closing/closed. They're rebuilding no matter what - Ovechkin's chase doesn't impact that much.

It's as if having Ovechkin near the blue line during 6-on-5 is actually useful to the team despite all the complaints here that he is a cherry-picking floater :dunno:
Even on that play his head was on a swivel looking for a teammate to pass to.

So selfish of him not shooting it at the net instead.

I see you're online for your nightly anti-Ovechkin posts.
I know being factual is seen that way by some...wonder why?

He will break Gretzky record but facts shouldn't be abused like they were in that post.

It would be one thing it that missed ENG by Hathaway was in the final game of that series but Florida won the next 2 so it was descriptively inaccurate.

Ovechkin would have needed an enforcer in the 80's. Don't kid yourself. He would never be able to play the way he does now without them. The power forwards back then had to fight 10-20 times a year. Guys like Dave Brown would have whopped the everlasting s**t out of him if he threw blindsides, and the Bryan Marchments and Ulf Samuelssons would have done their best to take his knees out if he scored too much.

Gretzky survived due to smartness. Not enforcers. But he definately needed them, just like any other star back then.

Careful, next time you'll say that the Caps benefit from Ovechkin playing long PP shifts or some other outrageous idea 💡

(Lost more than a few brain cells reading the last few pages of this thread... Yikes.)

For those of you who follow the Caps (I don't), what's the difference in Ovechkin's play since the All Star break that he's suddenly producing again (for now, anyway)?

Is he (a) not noticeably doing anything different, except scoring more, which perhaps suggests his body needed a rest?; or (b) is he doing something noticeably different?

I gathered some hockey interested friends to watch the WC 2005. There was this young Bureesque player with a mean streak I wanted them to see. I also remember his first NHL game. So I've seen a few games over the decades...

He still would have needed a bodyguard in the 80's and 90's. NHL didn't employ goons, they employed nutcases back then. Someone like Link Gaetz would have headhunted Ovie and Gaetz makes the Tom Wilsons of today look like Mother Theresa.

Also, a PF was expected to drop the gloves back then. Clarke, Tocchet, Neely. You couldn't hit and not fight.

AND finally. Were the tough point producing players like Neely and Lindros free of injuries? I love Ovie's wreckingball style, but he has done it during the softest NHL period of all time. So I stand by my statement: he would have needed enforcers.
