It's just insane to think that while highly unlikely, it really isn't just absolutely out of the question that he might score 1000 goals. Unreal. The probability and likelihood of that happening now feels like how it once felt to even suggest he had a shot at 894. No way. But here we are, so who knows?
i dont think that is too likely, however, had he not missed his rookie year, and another 60 games to strike/covid, he would probably be around 870 today, and then ya - 1,000 is really on the menu.

Another 50 goal season would be tremendous...would put him at ~830 with just 65 goals left. Hopefully still doable for someone like him over 2 seasons, even at ages 38 and 39

If he wants to go for it, 1000 is within reach IMO. Suspect he’ll retire or go to KHL not long after breaking the record though

I think 1,000 is likely out of reach. 900 definitely.

He'll be 38 at the start of next year and then 39 when he hits 900. Ovi is a physical monster but scoring another 100 after that would take him to 42 which isn't easy for a lot of guys.

wow what a piece of history for that kid!

I collect game used sticks, I have Yzerman's first 60th goal stick and it (along with a Robert Lang stick which was the first I got) are by far my favorite pieces of memorabilia. It bothers me that hockey cards are worth more monetarily than these sorts of things (and yes I have/had some rare ones though I mostly sold when prices got crazy in the last couple of years).

would be another level to get an 800th goal stick

I wonder if you'd be the person to hunt down the game I'm looking for, then.

I've got an Antero Niittymaki stick signed by most of the Tampa Bay Lightning that, if I'm not mistaken, is from a Capitals game that had him smash it on the crossbar but it's like the internet has become a black hole for highlights from the era already. It'd almost have to be 09-10 but after that I get a little stumped.

guess is 3/20 but can't find a video of anything

Like I said it depends how long he’s willing to play here. He’s shown zero sign of slowing down and I don’t see any reason he can’t continue to rack up PP and EN goals into his 40s. He needs 200 more, let’s say he gets 30 more this year. 40 next year, 35 the year after, then 30, 25, 20 and 20 retiring at age 43. Not far fetched at all if he wants it, and frankly those are conservative estimates… But I doubt he’ll want to stay in NA that long to pad the new record. Probably leaves/retires at the end of the season he breaks the record during.

Yep. I think he walks away at the age of 40 after his contract ends regardless of how many goals he gets in that last season.
Very well could be. No chance he walks away without the record though, he’ll probably have it by then but if not I’m sure he stays until he gets it.

It's not really history, Ovi put goal #800 stick away. He gave him a regular game used stick.

It's definitely still a great piece of memory but no one will pay a lot for the stick that was used after goal #800 (not not THE one), because pretty much every stick is going to be just that up until goal #895.

When you get to this age, you can drop off a cliff in the blink of an eye.

A major injury would also be devastating.

I'm pulling for him but it's far from a slam dunk that he will break the record. I'm just amazed he's put himself in this conversation despite the covid stoppages and lockouts.

Oh, well it's not really the stick itself or the worth (a PSA 10 rookie Ovechkin card will probably be "worth" more monetarily than a 895 stick for example, just the nature of the market). The memory of being there and getting a stick from a legend who just scored what probably nobody else may ever touch after is amazing.

For me, I collect stick precisely because of the memories. Extra special when you were at the game itself too. To me they're worth far more sentimentally than any card could be. It's not about the money at all (would just sell some old hockey cards if I really wanted a stick that was being bid on for example lol).

Only thing that can stop him is an injury.

People said the exact same thing when he hit #600 and #700.

Yep.

I think a lot of people (mainly haters) are hoping for some miraculous drop off for him. Realistically, only injuries can stop him at this point.

He has 297 potential career games left to play before his contract expires at the age of 40 to score 95 more goals.

He can drop to .32 goals per game and he still gets there. Will he play in all 297 games? Nope. However if he stays close to his career games played up until now then he will have zero issues hitting 900 career goals.

Didn’t he say himself that as soon as he scores 894 he will immediately retire? I don’t think he will have desire or motivation to play much longer after setting the record

If he finishes his contract with 10-15 goals to go, and is still healthy/able, there’s no way he doesn’t sign up for another year. He’s been planning to break the record for several years now.

That was a joke.
