My favorite part of all this is the outrage at the capitals for having the audacity to strategize getting the puck to the greatest goal scorer of all time when there’s an opportunity to score a goal. Like that somehow isn’t the most logical thing to do.
Right? Like people are acting like the Caps are getting blown out 8-0 and opponents are pulling their goalies out of sympathy.

And here is a full breakdown on Ovechkin:

0-100 goals | 167 games
100-200 goals | 129 games
200-300 goals | 177 games
300-400 goals | 161 games
400-500 goals | 167 games
500-600 goals | 189 games
600-700 goals | 154 games

Ovi aged much better as a goalscorer. Gretzky was only great in early to mid 80's, then he just fell off as a goalscorer.

Yes. It took Gretzky 601 games to go from 700 to his final total of 894.

194 goals in 601 games was a goals per game pace of 0.323 which is 26.5 goals over 82 games.

Before that he had 700 goals in 886 games for a .790 goals per game rate which translates to 64.8 goals over 82 games.

The only thing that’s going to bug me when he passes Howe will be the comments about how he did it 450+ games quicker and each further generation thinking Howe was a mere compiler, with zero context added in terms of scoring environment.

Other than that, looking forward to Ovechkin moving into second place in the coming weeks.

Real shame that Howe went to the WHA and didn't stay in the NHL.

Howe was probably the greatest goalscorer ever who Ovechkin had to beat to claim the title.
There is a pretty convincing argument that Bobby Hull never surpassed Howe as a goalscorer in terms of career achievements unless one puts a lot of stock into WHA seasons, and nobody else before Ovechkin really came close.

I doubt anybody on the Caps is able to score that putaway empty net goal last night from that part on the ice. Last I checked, scoring empty net goals is a good thing because it ices the game.

People act like the Caps are some big time Stanley Cup contender if it weren't for Ovechkin (leads the team in goals by eight, leads the team in points by eight ahead of a different guy, leads the team in even strength goals by five, leads the team in powerplay goals by two). They're a pretty lousy team and Ovechkin is still their best offensive weapon, him being out there to put games away is still helping the team.
So true. The Caps haven't won a round since they won the Cup.
Doubt one is coming this spring either.
Their entire identity has become OV chasing the record.

It's pretty mind-blowing that Wayne only has 2 OT goals in his entire career.

That is a strange stat, though there's obviously a few things that made OT goals rarer during his career. Like the Oilers dominance which probably lead to fewer OT games, OT being 5 on 5, and regular season OT not even existing during his first few years.

Conversely Gretzky has 4 OT playoff goals, and Ovechkin surprisingly has 0 (same as Lemieux and Howe).

As opposed to what, full-blown tanking a few years earlier by dumping their most productive player? At least this a great way to honor their best player in franchise history and keep fans interested in their games. But nice passive aggressive comment.

Haters gonma hate.

scoring goals when the team lose? He's a one trick pony not helping W's.

Is on the ice to secure the lead in W's? He's done and padding his stats.

Scoring non empty net goals in wins? Onky because Washington is giving him all the opportunity and amazing roster.

With the amount of coverage his empty net goals get, you'd think he was a lt 300 career goals and beating the empty net goal record...

But no, he's beatimg the empty net goal record just as he's approaching Gretzky's overall scoring record. Funny how things works

And? There’s probably been, what, 100 of those since he joined the caps?
Gret
The Caps' entire identity has been Ovechkin for nearly 2 decades, record chase or not. Why? Because players like him are as rare as unicorns.
Stanley Cup Champs were their identity fur awhile.
He has been the face of the franchise for two decades sure .....but a team identity? They don't have one anymore.

There's also the pro-Ovi stat that out of his 800 goals he's got 124 GW while Gretz ended up with 91.

It's no different than Pitts and Crosby/Malkin.
