Hanifin another American won't be staying has to be concerning for them in the future of acquiring Americans. Fox was a previous one who didn't sign but he only wanted to play New York. This seems to becoming a trend.
Both teams need to start structuring their contracts w heavy bonuses for American players. Cgy did exactly that w Huberdeau (a U.S. resident) and he signed.

Hanifin’s present contract isn’t structured as such.

Only in Calgary. Americans haven't bailed in Montreal en masse, or other Canadian places. Only Petry left for family reasons/covid politcalness. Gionta was captain of the team. Caufield signed for 8 years. Dvorak is American.

The players trying to get out of Winnipeg are split 50/50. PLD & Schiefele are Canadian. Hellebucyk & Wheeler are American, yet even those 2 committed to Winnipeg. Hellebucyk is going into the last year of a 6 year contract, which included 4 years of UFA, with Winnipeg. Wheeler signed for 8 - almost all UFA years.

We know there's good reasons for that organization to be falling apart, but Calgary is getting under-rated on how much players do not want to play there.

Also Chevaldayof’s strategy of targeting northern mid Western American players has been very successful, needs to stay the course - Minny, Wisconsin & Michigan

Byfuglien (who simply didn’t want to be a pro hockey player anymore), Connor, Pionk, Hellebuyck (for 8-years), Wheeler (for a number of years) etc

Yet there’s this foolish belief players will be warm to the idea of playing in Quebec City just because “the market is passionate about hockey”…

Backlund most likely isn't going to sign. Conroy has some major decisions to make as new GM. Also. that 1st round pick Montreal received in the Monahan trade could end up being extremely valuable.

We only get that pick if Calgary doesn't receive Florida's pick in 2025; otherwise it's probably Florida's pick again for us in 2025. We get the worst of the 2 picks.

Florida would have to finish bottom 10 next year for us to outright get Calgary's pick in 2025.

Looks unlikely Calgary's pick will be 20+ next year. So we will need Florida and Calgary to suck in 2025.

Yes, there's no way Calgary has a 20+ pick next year, so we can forget that. They probably miss the playoffs again.

Which means we get the worst of Calgary's & Florida's pick in 2025.

We can get Calgary's pick in 2025 outright, IF they don't have Florida's pick in 2025. That can happen if Florida finishes bottom 10 this year. Philadelphia then gets the 2025 pick, Calgary 2026 pick.

In your flow chart, this is reflected on the left hand side, with the question: "Did Calgary receive R1 Florida 2025?" then follow the No answer.

Not so sure about that.

Depends on how they handle the summer & how good/bad new coach is.

They had talent to be a playoff lock this past season & aren't losing any key players unless they sell off Hanifin/Backlund/Lindholm for futures.

A good summer and return to average career levels from Huberdeau & Markstrom and they'll be closer to winning their division then missing playoffs imo

Vegas, Edmonton & LAK are going to be top 3 again. Calgary will battle it out with Seattle & Vancouver for a potential 4th spot. San Jose will suck next year too. Anaheim should see some improvement, but won't contend for a playoff spot.

I don't see how they improve. We'll see what they get for their players.

Montreal fans that think they have it bad with UFAs should look at Winnipeg, Calgary, and Ottawa, that not only can't attract players, but also lose their good players too.

DeBrincat list of teams he’s willing to be dealt are VGK, Stars, Preds, and Det

First three are no state income tax locales combined w the numerous loopholes te Us system offers…. these small market CDN teams won’t be able to keep up unless they change their contract strategies w heavy bonus deals for American resident players, even that may not be enough for more than 50% of the time

Those cities also have substantially lower costs of living.

You can buy a mansion in Dallas for under a million dollars. I'm scared to think of what the following $799K would cost in Montreal or Toronto.

It's all about winning nobody wanted out when the Flames & Jets made the playoffs.

Players are on the grind all year and when they have a rare day off they rest. Summer they go back home and/or travel.
