I don't think he was let go a year ago. He's still listed on Arizona's hockey ops page. I just think Arizona gave permission to Toronto to speak with him and they ended up hiring him.

If you were dropped in a remote village in some desert you'd be almost guaranteed to see a kid with an Argentina Messi shirt just running around. I had a latino 8yo today in a class where i was substitute and he has a tourette kind of habit of saying messimessimessimessi. I see countless PSG shirts in elementary and secondary school, the most common by far with the Albiceleste.

Messi doesn't have a clothing line and shoes that are known and worn worldwide. He's the most known present player, but he's not the most iconic. People have been wearing Air Jordans worldwide for more than 30 years. Go in Asian countries and you'll see kids with Bulls shirts instead of Messi. Messi's fame is the result of soccer's worldwide notoriety, whereas Basketball's fame and growth were the result of Jordan's notoriety. MJ is still the most iconic athlete worldwide.
