Lionel Messi coming to Inter Miami in the MLS next season...

About 5 years ago I was having a debate with my friends and told them that within 5-10 years, I thought the MLS would surpass the NHL in popularity/viewership, and they laughed at me....

It will be interesting to see much impact Messi will have in North America.

Perhaps as much as Beckham and Drogba?

The impact will be huge. My 7 year old passionately loves soccer and Messi/Ronaldo. We'll likely go to every Montreal-Miami game and have already talked about booking plane tickets to one of the major MLS US teams (incidentally, we talked about Miami) if Messi ever decided to come over. I've never even done that with hockey outside of going to games in Ottawa to watch affordable (and available) NHL hockey.

A bit surprised at the 2 year term but I guess with the cap supposedly taking a nice jump over the next 2-3 years it does make sense for players to maybe take short term deals right now and go for more on their next contract with the higher cap in 2 or 3 years. Expecting to see more short term deals like this during this off season.

Sadly for us it only means MLS tickets will go up and the chances to compete will go down.

Habs tickets will still be $300.

Messi is probably the most iconic athlete of all-time. Millions of people literally adore him, in the religious sense. If you were dropped in a remote village in some desert you'd be almost guaranteed to see a kid with an Argentina Messi shirt just running around. I had a latino 8yo today in a class where i was substitute and he has a tourette kind of habit of saying messimessimessimessi. I see countless PSG shirts in elementary and secondary school, the most common by far with the Albiceleste.

I definitely don't want him going to Ottawa. Lol

He'd make them a winner for sure.

Not sure what's happening with that sale & if there are any restrictions on Dorion. Smith sucks, but Dorion seems to love him. Smith has 2 years left on a 3 year extension he signed in 2021, so Sens might bring him back due to the limbo & financial considerations. Smith is still coach in any case. He hasn't been fired.
Dorion loves him as long as he’s not allowed to hire a new coach until ownership comes in…

It's the biggest catch for MLS since Beckham.

No doubt on my mind that messi is superior player, but Beckham was transcendent in a way that I don't think messi is. We will see if messi is willing or comfortable to step outside of his box and appeal to the non football fans.

Anyways, consumer tastes will keep going towards football as we get more and more immigration. Keep an eye out for cricket too. It's a massive deal in huge population centers, and we are getting a good amount of immigration from these areas.

I'm already seeing it replace baseball diamonds where I live for the last several years.

We might actually see some short term deals in UFA this year, as players know there will be significant cap jumps in 2024 & 2025, especially the younger guys (27).

That's oof worthy.

I was hoping they'd look to former CBJ Savard, but there goes that.

I wonder what they gave up and they might be interested in a goalie.

They definitely should be interested in a goalie. D & goaltending is absolutely priorities for them.
