Teams move their depth all the time to retain their stars:

Chicago dumped Leddy, Ladd, Versteeg, Teravainen, Bickell, Byfuglien.

That's how it works. Stars take up your cap. You need to be shrewd on depth signings, trades and drafting to round out your club.

Every GM in T.Os situation keeps Marner, Matthews, Nylander, Reilly and Tavares and dumps the players you mentioned.

Just go look at how often depth guys on the Caps, Pens, Bolts change from year to year. You keep your stars. Every team knows and does this.

The Hawks also won something before they did that, and when they did do that, they became garbage. The leafs haven't even won a series.

The biggest mistake was 2018-19. They had a newly signed Tavares with Matthews and Marner still on ELCs. They should have gone all in that season knowing their depth was going to take a massive hit the following year. The poor decision making started with not signing Nylander before the season started so his cap hit was over $10m that year.

They did trade for Muzzin but they needed a lot more help than that. They still had Hainsey getting the 2nd most icetime on D and Zaitsev/Gardiner 4th and 5th. You can’t expect to go anywhere with that D.
Nylander's cap is under 7 million.

Leafs mistake was signing Tavares, not because he isn’t a good player, because that $ should’ve been used to sure up their D

They became garbage because Keith and Seabrook went from one of the best duo of D in the league to AHL and depth material. Also Hossa silently retired from hockey. That and they were not able to draft anyone to replace those guys. Nothing to do with the contract of Toews and Kane. But hey keep thinking depth wins cup you'll still be wrong tomorrow.

They started becoming garbage even before that. They just stunk worse later.

They also lost Cup winning 4th liners Ladd & Byfuglien and also a 3rd liner in Brouwer.

The depth on the Hawks team was insane

Supposedly that Bergevin knew, wasn't at the first meeting but the second one.
Bergevin + the Mailloux pick is the final nail and will be out soon.

It's an old team. Old teams become bad. News at 11.

Here's the age of their cup winning core :

Hjalmarsson 34
Seabrook 36
Keith 38
Sharp 39
Hossa 42
Kane will turn 33 in 3 weeks
Toews 33

The only way for them to keep winning would be via draft and they were not able to do that. They finished first in the western conference 4 years ago and those guys were already getting old.

Yes but losing their top 3 dmen hurt them a lot more than any depth they could lose. Specially since it was a very very solid top 3 one of the best on the league.

it was 5 years ago, and since then, they have sucked. The very next year after getting 1st place, they were at the bottom of the league and have stayed there since.

So Bergevin's name comes up 0 times in the report. That's why I waited to reserve judgement. Glad to see he had no involvement.

Look at the whole conversation, he just said that he came out publicly about it but wasn’t at the meeting. His name wasn’t name once in the 107 page report
I'm reading it, names are anonymous, so we won't see the name Bergevin.
