The last two games, he’s just been lost,” he observed. “At one point, he was orchestrating a push with two forwards behind him and you could see Roman Josi was frustrated. That’s his job, not Barron’s.” - Alex Daugherty, via TVA Sports

Dahlin's post-game interview last night was concerning if you're a Buffalo fan. He's starting to sound a lot like Eichel & ROR with his frustration at the lack of improvements by the team / organization.

Can't blame him, he's holding his end of the bargain, has entered his prime and has signed his long-term deal. Without meaningful improvement, you can't expect a player to fall on his sword for the decades of failure of this franchise and stay in perpetual purgatory. I feel bad for the fans, they are closing in on two decades of abject misery.

Kanata ,ON
The most recent examples are probably before my time.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the names that come to mind with respect to learning passable French are:

Bob Gainey
Larry Robinson
Ken Dryden?
Robinson is from my neck of the woods, so he grew up with a lot of french speaking folks around him. The other two definitely had to work at it, though.

Montreal will probably start doing deferred salary in the future

I remember reading that Bettman and Daly are not a fan of deferred salary, because it could be used for cap circumvention. With a new CBA on the horizon, the NHL could be looking at removing it completely or putting some restrictions on it. So I am not so sure it will be available beyond 2026.
So someone found a new loophole? New type of Weber and Hossa deals incoming

Not exactly (see above). Bettman is very cognizant of the potential of cap circumvention of this legacy clause (which came from before the salary cap) . I expect some restriction to be made in the new CBA. Here's an excerpt from Daly :
Daly says the original deferred money clause in the CBA dates back to the pre-salary cap era and will "probably need adjustment on some basis going forward."
When asked point blank by Russo if deferring salary could in certain cases be considered cap circumvention, Daly said "It can be, sure."
"That’s a long-term big-picture fear, I suppose," Daly added. "It’s less a micro-dynamic fear particularly because, as I said, we’ve had to make interpretations which I think will continue to be binding until we renegotiate over it."

Weber contract caused contract length to be reduced to 7-8 years.

The rumors a few months ago was that the league directors/GMs wanted to reduce max contract length to 5 years in the next CBA. And the differed money clause will probably be removed or limited too.

It's fine. Ottawa will lose their first round pick.

I'm confused about the Vatrano extension.
It's a 3 year contract , right ?
6 M per year as for the cap hit but the actual salary is deferred ?
If so it's not really a loophole, just a financial arrangement

The loophole is that salary paid post contract years (the deferred salary) doesn't count on the AAV (aka cap hit). Vatrano's contract value is $18m for a 3 years contract, but his cap hit will be $4.57m AAV instead of $6m.

NHL GMs must be incredibly unimaginative if they have had this option all along and only started using it since last year.

What are all these VPs and Executive Directors even doing if they don’t know the CBA inside out and backwards??
Being there because of who they know rather than what they know.

Bad break for Lindstrom poor kid.

Ducks save 1.4M x 3 but they did not need any cap space they must be cooking something. Zegras+ for one of the unhappy NYR/Canucks?
