Ottawa 67s 2024-25 Season Thread, Part II

I cannot say for certain and I do not know any of what I am about to say is accurate. I have spoken to no one.

I think maybe there was a deal with Brantford but O’Donnell wouldn’t waive his NTC. I say this because something held up that deal (apparently). I think they simply ran out of time and Brantford shifted gears and acquired Budnick. Boyd found a landing spot for Stonehouse in Peterborough and it look like Peterborough release McIntyre so it doesn’t look like they had any time to work anything else out on their end.

With the OA trade deadline being !2;00 Noon today, I “think” this is the most likely explanation.

Does Boyd even have a prospective deal for Pinelli? Does he have other options? I am sure he can arrange a primarily PICKS ONLY deal for Pinelli but at this point I highly doubt there is a significant player involved returning to Ottawa.

My understanding is he has moved out of his billet home. He is at home awaiting a trade so I assume this will all get worked out one way or the other but I do think the return seems to point towards being underwhelming.

Also, Brantford and Sudbury both have a lot of draft picks so it does make sense that there are still rumours of Pinelli going to one or the other.

Seems reasonable. The trade to Brantford was reported by the OHLScoops twitter account with some degree of certainty so you'd presume a NTC issue would have been worked out by then, but who knows. Kids these days!

Looks like Boyd left the Petes to hold the bag on the OA situation though. Looks like quick thinking on that one to at least get a 4th and 6th out of it.

On the topic of hockey, I was impressed with Nelson last night. I thought he played really well and kept the score closer than it probably should have. Brampton is a big team, much bigger than the 67s. The 67s were really hard-pressed to win many board/corner battles last night and had a difficult time getting much going. Overall, I found the 67s to be a little nonchalant with the puck in their own zone.

Mews has REALLY improved since the start of the season. He confidently controls the play when he's on the ice and wants the puck on his stick.

We talk about this every year but Boyd needs to draft bigger kids and work to construct a team that's harder to play against.

He can draft whomever he needs, but who will get on the ice? Amidovski has great size, but it doesn't show from the bench. Last night, they dressed the two new affiliates, but they were benched in the third. I agree about Mews. He seems to have shaken off the malaise that he was under in October.

The challenge in drafting the bigger kids is if you want the ones that have higher ceilings, you have to pick them early. Ottawa has not had a lot of high picks lately. They had the one opportunity to take Beaudoin with the 7th pick in 2022 but they took Mews instead. Mews isn’t small though. he is 6’1”. But Beaudoin was a big kid in that draft and I was hoping they managed to snag him. I was surprised he fell to Barrie at 10th.

But, the key is to get someone early picks here and there and try to draft the size. A lot of drafts don’t have the skilled size early. If you look at the 2024 draft, only 12 guys in the first two rounds were 6’1” or taller. Then, in rounds 3 and 4, the bigger kids with lower ceilings get picked. They are les s likely to turn out.

Ottawa has done a relatively good job drafting key players in that 3rd to 6th round range and they typically are not drafting big kids with those picks. They are trying to draft the skill guys and maybe bigger D-Men.

I think further to OMG67's post from a few days ago, Boyd needs to seriously consider whether Cameron is the right coach to lead a younger team through a lean couple of years (call it a rebuild for lack of a better term). Personally, I don't think he's shown the ability to develop young players. Two exceptions would be Mews (who's gone through some stops and starts along the way, as we all know) and Marrelli, who's a very good d-man. One component of developing younger players is to give them ice time, sheltered ice time is OK, but they've got to play and they've got to play against tough opponents and be allowed to make mistakes and learn from then.

I think I saw the two new players play only a shift or two in the 2nd period. They both looked like they brought some speed and skill in their limited ice.

Consider that Cameron has only kept his jobs mostly for under 4 years. It is really tough to say either way that he develops his players when he isn’t in town long enough to generate any sort of sample size. BUT, I agree with what you are saying. And, the reality is, he is puting a huge dark cloud over this franchise right now. It may blow over in the general public as they will forget but the hockey community will not.

In light of all of this, I cannot see a way forward with Dave Cameron as the head coach. If we do find out a lot of this delay is based on NTC’s and we couple that will a lack of high ceiling NCAA commit players joining the team, I think that rests squarely on the fear that Ottawa is now not a place to go if you want to be a successful hockey player. These are still “If’s” but we do need to consider these possibilities, especially in light of the handful of trade requests including this latest rumoured request by Mews.

I believe you will see Foster or Dever moved with pinelli I think the idea is to try & get an 08 but sounding like it will probably end up being an 06,07 & many picks, from what I was told there is 3 trades Pinelli foster, Pinelli Dever & Pinelli on his own on Boyd’s desk and it’s just going to be what one he signs by tomorrow at 12, I know it’s Brantford Kitchener I can’t confirm the 3rd team sounds like Oshawa but potentially Sudbury ?

In fairness, he cannot wait until Noon. The other teams will start to look elsewhere and they will start to drop out if he drags his rear end. Sounding more and more like a Papineau situation to be honest.

OShawa doesn’t have the assets without Griffin and if it is Oshawa with Griffin, I cannot see why he would do a deal with Kitchener or Brantford that doesn’t’ include the ‘08 over tying this up with Griffin. The only other explanation would be that he is using an OShawa deal to pressure the other two to give their ‘08 but that would mean there is no deal on his desk he is willing to sign off on.

Anything on Mews?

Would Villeneau, Chitaroni and multiple pics get Pinelli and Mews to Sudbury?

Because this looks more like Mews would prefer a move out of Ottawa, I would do Mews for Villeneuve and picks. I think Mews value is significantly higher because of his offensive impact.

I don’t see why Sudbury would do that deal. To me, that is more sideways.

I cannot see a team getting both Mews and Pinelli in a deal. It would be really tough. It is hard for one team to have the expendable assets to pull that off. I’d try to piece together a deal for fun but I honestly don’t think there would be a way to do it. It would start with Blonda and end with a ridiculous number of picks. Any by ridiculous, I mean say goodbye to pretty much every 2nd and 3rd you have between 2025 and 2027. You and I both know that won’t happen which is why that type of deal pretty much never happens.

Is rumour true that Mews is NCAA bound after this year

Depends on how you look at the rumour. Is it true that Michigan has made a scholarship offer? I think so, yes. Is it true that Mews is seriously considering it? I highly doubt that. I would be SHOCKED if the Flames keep him unsigned after the season he is having. They have to be kissing their lucky stars they managed to pull him out of the 3rd round. And with how difficult it has been for them to nail down players and keep them, they need to hit on their draft picks.

Essentially, Mews would need to turn down the Flames contract offer because he doesn’t’ want to play there for him to even be in a situation to consider Michigan. That would be pretty f’n bold.

With the pending trade of Pinelli looming, does the team name a captain for the remainder of the seaosn or do they expand the guys with “A’s?” My guess is they give Mayich the “C”

Mayich the "C" of course - who else?

We had 4 OAs pending after last year and now at the last minute Boyd gets a 4th and 6th for Stonehouse to the Petes. Questions: is this the best Boyd could do (now, yes, but over the past 6 months)? What was the strategy here with our OAs - it obviously hasn't worked out. Unless, maybe, our OAs weren't very good this year. It just feels so disappointing. And 2nd: what are the Petes thinking? A waste of draft picks for them no?

As far as the game last night, we were kinda listless. But Amidoivski has 3 goals in previous 6 games - why aren't you playing him to death DC?

What does it say about Cameron if the rumours are true that players are activating NTC not to come here. This is a rebuilding team young guys should be jumping through hoops to get to a team where they can shine.

OOPS think I answered my own question sophmores and rookies don't get to shine here.

Who else....Gerrior he's the heart of this team imo.

Maybe foster or Dever will get letters because if they don’t get traded they are both 100% two over there over agers next season. If mews hangs around maybe he gets one as well

If Dever is coming back next year, you should make him the Captain. Let him start now as to assistants I t depends on who is around next year
