Imagine if all the 2007 and some of the 2008 players who were exceptional played on the same team for a year. Then the following year, they graduate to the OHL
OH yeah, and for games, they play in the OHL against the league.

That is what the NTDP does. It is a developmental league. You may not think it is great, but take a look at the players they send to National teams; they all come from the same place.

Sweden they all come from the same league.

The difference between us and them is tht we take the brightest and best individuals and try to make a team with a coach that only has them for a few days.

Not sure how many people here were around in 72, but the big difference was acknowledged as the Russian team played together every day all year. The Cdn stars just had a couple of weeks to get to know each other.

The same thing is happening to us now, only to make it worse, we have a bunch of political hacks that are trying to appease the different leagues and different NHL scouts.

Cowan was injured but he was ETHAN COWAN STAR DRAFT PCK OF TEH TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS,
He was not the top winger in the league. Yes he is good but was he physically ready?

Why was Pineli busting his assets? SIMPLE . He knew that most people would say he made it to the team because of DC, so he went out every shift and did his best to prove that he deserved it. Ivankovic has a 3.51 GAA tell me that there are not any goalies better than him in the OHL let alone the CHL

Similarly skilled players replacing those on this years team would not have changed the outcome; maybe, a couple of He types and a not injured Schaefer would have.
Just accept this country’s best 2005 born were not the world’s best. The ‘07s + late birth ‘06s that dominated the USNTDP + additions just might dominate the WJC without any changes to Hockey Canada.

Edit: I’ve come to believe a big part of what makes the CHL the best place for development is kids get traded forcing them to learn to play within different systems and with different players.

I think you both can be right at the same time.

1> I do feel that more time spent as an elite group working and learning from each other is a good thing. I think Hockey Canada needs to find a way to make that happen more.
2> The CHL is a great developmental league with finds the ceiling of a lot of players, especially elite players. The better the players are, the better chance they have of winning tournaments on the World Stage.

IMO, the WJHC is an amazing tournament. They have really found a way to market it in a big way. But, the NTDP has an advantage in so far as the players have played together which builds chemistry. That is an advantage. As the players pool becomes more consistently stronger on the US side, they will naturally gain an advantage over what is usually a stronger Canadian side.

I think we can learn from that and from what Beast has said about the Russian model back in the 70’s. I don’t think it would be a bad thing to get the U-16, U-17 and U-18 teams together on a rotating cycle a couple times per season and have them participate in some form of exhibition matches for a week. The more these kids play together, the better. If it is about development, then it should not be a problem.

I think we can develop a situation where we can take advantage of both Worlds. This can also work for the US Born players playing in the CHL. It helps downplay the USNT program and maybe we can recruit more of the elite US Born players. Even if it is just a Canada-US Series.

Konnor Smith traded from OS to Brampton this morning for:

2x 2nds
3rd
5th
6th
7th
10th

IMO, Mayich isn’t far behind Smith from an impact defenseman perspective. I was thinking if we could get a 2nd, 3rd, and 5th for Mayich, that would be suitable enough to sacrifice him the remainder of this year. I think with the return Smith just got, it is possible we could do slightly better than that for Mayich.

It is my understanding that Boyd is trying to package him and Pinelli together in an effort to try to induce a team to give up their ‘08. I’m thinking that may be tough now. If Pinelli and Mayich are dealt, I am thinking it is more likely to be in separate trades. But, things are looking relatively good that me may get something very solid of Mayich on his own.

Big return to OS for Konnor Smith. Hopefully Boyd is getting calls in on Mayich, and considering those calls.

And based on the haul Saginaw got from Kingston yesterday, Dever or Foster as well.

Looks like some forwards going out the door....
I am usually the first to complain about the team's preference for smaller players but as a mate of mine has a family connection to Spenser Bowes, I'm pretty happy about it tbh! I think the fact that he is a late pick was purely a reflection of his size. I remember him standing out at training camp and it looks like he has good numbers this season. I can see why he has attracted interest from the 67s brass. Maybe he will grow a bit taller and get a little heavier (which he seems to have done since camp). I always have a soft spot for late round picks who make the team also. Good on him.

He is also a 17 year old so you have to keep it in perspective. He was an ‘07 picked int he ‘08 draft.

Apparently he is extremely skilled and size was the issue in his draft year. A guy I know who's involved in the cchl speaks highly of him, so we'll see. I do think however it's a move that's a prelude to bodies going out.

I think he was only something like 5’6” 130 in his 16 year old draft year.

Any more info on this Mews to London rumour?

How would that deal work without Hawery? It is not like it can be a picks based deal. I find that one hard to believe.

Agreed. I don’t see Hawery being involved. I also think the Knughts hang on to Read so it would have to be centered around picks, Fagen and Bidgood or Gerber…. Not sure we have enough capital to entice you.

Mews is every single bit of the first Owen Beck deal to Peterborough. You don’t even have the two 2nds…. Let alone an ‘08 that would waive their NTC.

The London rumour? Imagine getting Henry B back? He and PJ Fagan are the only two D that would make sense, along with Hawery and all their 2nd/3rd rounders available….

Haha. Brz is a lock here sorry pal.

I've been waiting for this since last summer's draft, but, now, I think the price may have been more than Dale wanted to pay.
What would he cost? Even Hawery wouldn’t be close to enough for 1.5 years of the top scoring Dman in the league.

Hawery is a high end prospect that dropped to the Knights because of signability issues. If the Owen Beck deal is a comparable then Hawery plus two 2nds and a 3rd would be the right ballpark.

I don’t think London is a team that would pay that. They typically don’t’ need to. They invade the defected market at a discount and get guys like MEws when they are 16 for peanuts.

Which teams do we think would be calling Boyd on Mews? I agree on your comments re: London making little sense as a destination for Mews.
