Ottawa 67s 2024-25 Season Thread, Part I

Looks like Stonehouse is currently in Ottawa. Since he would be at the stage where he is getting ready for a return (no contact - shoulder rehab), if he were going to be assigned to the ECHL or AHL, he’d likely be whether he is going to be reassigned. Since he is in Ottawa, it points to him being reassigned to Ottawa once he is ready to play.

Can confirm Stonehouse returned last Wednesday.Although he’s not technically supposed to be cleared to play until Nov 1 against Guelph he is feeling 100% and passing all tests could be back sooner.

Wow sounds like he'll be back way sooner than expected. Good for him as will be able to get back to speed earlier. From the 67's perspective it gives them options to trade whoever has the greatest value at deadline ( or hopefully before). If we can get good assets for one or even two OA's and maybe Pinelli it will help to set up the future. I agree with OMG though that Sirman might be out of luck sooner than expected. Too bad good kid.

There is 3 periods to watch and OT. Fronts outshot them after the first and Nelson played real well. Kingston guy got tripped up on OT and no call (probably because they already waved off 1 goal) and then Ottawa scored the winner.

As I said and I’ll say it again. It was back and forth with the exception of the first period but even after the first you were only leading by 1 goal lol.

Not sure what game Hinterland was watching, but I would agree that while Ottawa seemed to dominate the first period, Kingston was much better in the second and third and actually controlled much of the play for long stretches in both those periods. They also had puck possession for most of overtime as Ottawa couldn't win a faceoff to save their lives. Overall, this was an entertaining and pretty even game that either team could have easily won.

My concern is that we are really not giving Conway any chance to develop his skills in game situationby continually bringing him up and siting him on the bench.

Really the only players that might have any value adn it would be strictly picks are Stonehouse and mayich and Stonehouse.

Gerrior has no real value and neither does MacK.

The sooner we get the team down to 3 OA the sooner we can get real stability on the team. It must be hell for the OA's because thy really donot know what they are gong to be doing after Christmas and or the deadline to get down to 3.

Basically how it works is if a player plays one game in the first half, they get one semester tuition paid. If they play one game int he second half, they get a second semester tuition paid.

Players with Gold Scholarships get full expenses paid.

All first round picks get Gold Package Scholarships.

The Standard Player Agreement if for their 16 to 19 year old seasons. OA’s typically renegotiate their contracts where necessary.

I can’t see a reason why any OHL team wouldn’t provide an upgraded package or maintain the existing Gold Package for their OA’s. Typically OA’s play an impactful role on your team otherwise why bring them back as an OA? But, how many players need FIVE years of scholarship? I am not too sure it matters in Barlas’ situation. As soon as he steps on the ice in January, he will have qualified for a full four year scholarship.

I’m not sure what kind of a student he is and what kind of program he wants to enrol in.

I think this is the way I lean as well. However, there is still that rumour about MacK being on the move to Flint so if there is any validity to that, Boyd may not feel the same way. The team does need scoring so the possibility does exist that they want to keep the two forwards. Or, maybe they keep all four through to the deadline and see where the team stands and then Boyd makes a decision from there. Who knows? They could be back int he pack and there is solid interest in Mayich, MacK, and Stonehouse! Who knows what Boyd would do? We haven’t’ really gone through a sell off seaosn with Boyd as GM yet. I dont’ really know what his tendencies are.

Totally agree we need to get down to three OA's soon for everybody's sake. Just curious but you really do not seem to like Gerrior much. With the saturation of the OA market, only the contenders will shuffle OAs. Gerrior isn’t the type of player IMO, that a contender would target to upgrade their existing OAs.

If you look at Ottawa last year, I think that is a the blueprint for upgrades. Teams that already have OAs will want to acquire guys like Kressler, Mayer, and Maillet. Gerrior isn’t a centre. A leas than point per game winger wouldn’t be of much value to a contender.

The non-contenders all already have 3-4 OAs.

This isn’t a situation where Gerrior isn’t good. It’s a situation where there is saturation and that saturation makes players like him have poor trade value.

Stonehouse brings a different element to the game that a contender may value greatly. That intangible factor he has makes him more marketable amongst contenders. But even Stonehouse is questionable for value. We’d need one contender to really feel he is there missing link.

Can you define “interest” from the perspective of trade value?


From my perspective, there would be interest but not at the market value. He is worth more to the 67s on the roster than his market value.

Look I agree it's a buyers' market this year for OA's. As you point out in a subsequent post this would cause decrease value possibly. But there's a difference in saying that vs what another poster said was " no value". Gerrior would be an upgrade on many OA's imo. Could see a scenario where he goes at the deadline where if they get a decent offer ( if Boyd is in sell mode) with another OA coming back to finish the year. Takes one team to see him as an upgrade. That being said I agree his value to the 67's is more than if he traded. Kind of feeling the same way about Mayich who's doing a great job with Esh. At the end of the day even if we sell we've still got to shelter the young players to a degree.

For perspective, so everyone can have a stronger sense of the OA market saturation, here is a list of each OHL Team’s 3rd best OA (based on how I would rank them). I will try to lean towards the forwards for tiebreakers.

Barrie - Tai York LW 17-32-49 (Likely will upgrade)
Brampton - EMPTY SPOT
Brantford - Ben Bujold C 14-26-40 (May upgrade)
Erie - Sam Alfano RW 27-33-60
Flint - Evan Konyen RW 23-25-48 (Offseason trade with Sudbury)
Guelph - Max Namesnikov LW 24-26-50
Kingston - Gage Hayes 11-7-18 (Likely will upgrade)
Kitchener - Adrian Misaljevic LW 23-35-58
London - Landon Sim LW 10-19-29 (London will likely upgrade but they may upgrade 2 spots including goaltending. Tough to say what they will do specifically)
Niagara - Gavin Bryant C 21-33-54 (Niagara actually has four key OA’s)
North Bay - NB will be moving Wakely. The Leblanc twins are a package deal. VanSteensel is their captain I believe. I doubt they find a way to move the Leblanc’s to open an OA spot or two. No way they release them in a rebuilding year.
Oshawa - Luke Torrance LW 21-20-41 (Waiting on Roobroeck to be returned. If returned, it is likely they move one of Torrance or D-Amato to make room)
Owen Sound - Likely to move Smith to open a spot but they are rebuilding. I am not sure they will pay a high price for an OA. Their other two OAs are just “meh.” I don’t see them trading a 2nd and 3rd for an OA upgrade in a rebuild year. They will likely wait on the waiver wire and pick up whatever s there for free.
Peterborough - Ryder McIntyre RW 14-17-31 (Rebuilding. Same as Owen Sound. Their OA’s are character guys that they like)
Saginaw - PJ Forgione D 6’2” 215. One of five returning D-Men. They want to contend and will likely keep the big man. The other two are not going anywhere.
Sarnia - Tyson Ducette LW 23-23-46
Sault - Owen Allard C 18-26-44
Sudbury - Kocha Delic 30-34-64 (If they sell off, they will move all three of their guys but would likely just pluck guys off waivers to fill their spots or take back the other teams OAs that are being upgraded on)
Windsor - Noah Morneau C 13-21-34 (Will likely upgrade)

Will Gerrior LW 26-19-45

For perspective, this is what Ottawa is working against when trying to move OA’s and get something decent in return. If they were to try and move Gerrior, they would need to try to attract a contender because the contender would pay real assets to upgrade in a similar way Ottawa did last year acquiring Maillet, Kressler, and Mayer. So, from my perspective, Ottawa “should” want at least a 2nd and 3rd round pick to make it worth while to move Gerrior now. Otherwise, wait until the deadline, see how th market changes, see if Gerrior can pop off between now and then which could change his value.

I see Barrie, Brampton, Brantford, Kingston, and Windsor as the most likely to upgrade when the right player comes available. I see London upgrading as well but they need to figure out the goaltending before they upgrade their forward group. The rest will either stay status quo, or will pluck a value player off waivers. Of the first group I mentioned, they are more likley to go after players like Wakely, Delic, McCoy, DeAngelis, and Smith as elite upgrades.

Not a lot of teams looking to upgrade. The rest it would be more of a sideways move. Gerrior is an Ottawa boy. I cannot see them move him. He is more valuable to the 67’s than he is in this saturated market.

MacKenzie may have value. But, Sztuska is also available and potentially Parsons is available out of Kitchener as OA Goalies. There will be some potential road blocks there. All three of those guys are very capable.

To me, Stonehouse is the wildcard. That kid has something not many have and that is the ability to grate on every last nerve of the opposition. I could see a Contending team want to add that element. Unless there is something in this market I am not seeing, he is the one that is positioned to be the most valuable, especially if multiple contending teams want to add that element.

EDIT: In this market, if Ottawa decided to keep MacK, Stonehouse, and Mayich, and they simply were either trading or releasing Gerrior, I can’t see them get more than a 3rd and 5th for him at the absolute highest value. I think if the market conditions are right, Stonehouse could fetch a 2nd and 3rd. Same with Mayich. MacK? Really tough to say on that one. Goalies are tougher to judge. Lalonde went for a 3rd and 7th. You have to think he would go for more than Lalonde. 3rd and 5th? 2nd and 7th? Somewhere around there.

There were a couple of games where they needed both Sirman and Mayich so my thought was that instead of playing games with MacK they could sit Gerroir. I agree it is interesting last year's teams would have loved Sirman or Gerrior. This year, there are just so many OA, and then Musty has thrown another wrench into things.

I recognize that shots on goal has its limitations as a measuring stick, but broadly it means that we aren't getting caved in and winning only with a combination of luck and goaltending. Small sample size and all, but perhaps this team will be a little more competitive than we thought and can stay around the top half of the Conference this season.

The 67’s are a smaller speedy team with solid structure and overall, solid puck movement. That will always make them competitive. From a regular season success perspective, it will come down to whether they have enough scoring. They also generally have strong goaltending and decent defence.

The way the 67’s play favours them in the early season. DC always has them properly prepared. They are also very well conditioned.

There are many reasons why Ottawa is presenting as a strong team right now. The question is whether it can be maintained AND whether that strength can be measured against the top teams they need to compete with. That answer won’t likely come about for another couple months.

The deal is done. He will have to negotiate an OA contract. What he can negotiate, Idk.

From what I understand, the standard ohl education package is paid at the rates of tuiton and books at the university nearest the home adress for up to fours years towards an (undergraduate?) degree. Players are not getting a masters or better degree covered without getting school, government, ...bursaries.
But the $ amount accrued could conceivably cover costs in addition to books and tuition if the player managed enough university courses covered by the team while playing to graduate in less than four years. It would be wise for a NB kid to take advantage of university courses covered by the ohl team while playing if intent on going to McGill.
