The "agitator" part is particularly intriguing I think as there aren't many with that blend of skill and shift disturber qualities. There aren't many of those around the league and in the right scenario you may end up in a bidding war. I think the return value could be surprising.Stonehouse and Mayich.
Both are set to be OA’s next season. Stonehouse has an NHL contract. Mayich doesn’t.
Since Stonehouse has an NHL contract, it is unlikely he returns next season for an OA year. He now becomes a candidate for trade at the deadline. Mayich, on the other hand, does not have a contract. It is likely he returns next season. The Blues have the extra year to get him signed and since he was a late round pick, I think it is unlikely they will sign him early. I think his game needs to improve offensively and he would benefit from that extra season in the OHL.
That lines up MacK, Gerrior, and Mayich as the Plan “A” OA’s next season.
I guess that now means we start to consider what the projected value is for Stonehouse at the deadline. What is he? He’s a potential 40 goal scorer that is a pain in the arse to play against. HE is an agitator that draws penalties. The latter of those attributes are why Edmonton signed him. I’ve said many times he is the OHL version of Brad Marchand. For him to go undrafted and then sign an NHL contract right after camp, you gotta think the Oilers see something in him as a pro. How does that translate at the deadline? He isn’t the type of player to play for Team Canada and he isn’t high profile. Maybe Brett Harrison is a comparable? Is that too much? Stonehouse isn’t a centre. Tyler savard doesn’t score enough to be a comparable. Then there is Zhilkin. Again, another centre but Stonehouse is more productive with the puck and without it. Zhilkin and Harrison went for same trade value.
I think it will all depend on where the trade market is this deadline. Stonehouse won’t go for a 2023 1st but I think he is in that group of players that are one step below those guys. LAst season those guys went for two 2nds and three 3rds. Will the market be similar this year or depressed?
