Jack Beck update:

Following the win, Dean called Beck “likely the most elite 20-year-old in the league.”

Dean added that Beck’s leadership has been important for the team this season.

“He’s extremely good at coaching the young guys,” Dean said. “He’s extremely good at leading by example and he’s really taken on an identity here with some of the other players out. He’s seeing this as his opportunity to step in and be more vocal and lead by example.”

Jack Beck update:

Jack Beck is an excellent 200 foot player. When we heard he wanted out, it was a big blow.

Provided he could stay healthy, he was easily going to be amongst the league leading scorers and solid defensive player for SSM. Excellent value for a 2nd and 3rd round pick.

Don’t believe we will see much excitement during this years deadline. Be prepared to sit back & watch other teams throw picks & players around. Unless the market opens up but hearing price for anything is outrageous currently.

Houben gets the call up today. Another 16 year old in his first game! It will be great to see him get a few shifts under his belt.

That was some awful team defence. Really bad net front coverage today. Totally out of ordinary for this team.

Today's game.
The good:

-Yani looked good: mobile, good with the puck, in the right places. He'll do well in the coming years.
- Kelly was nasty and looking for trouble. He was lucky to get away with a few roughings. I think he's better off being a skill-guy but the edge he has is welcome.
- Kingston looked really good, continuing on from their 9-2 drubbing of Peterborough.

The not-so-good:
- Houden is big, and not very mobile. He's like Hilton; maybe he'll learn to use his size and stay in the league.
- Donoso looked ... human. The defence let in the usual high-quality shots and he missed a few. Might be an omen for the 2nd half.
- MacKenzie? Nelson on the bench.

You mean like the shorthanded breakaway for Kingston, where the Hemström got a shot, got the rebound and another shot, then when the Ottawa defender finally arrived and fumbled the puck, Hemström got another chance. Or when Thibodeau scored on a backhand in the crease with three defenders watching. Lots of Ottawa defenders standing around watching the show. There were many other examples.

I find it hard to fault Donoso early on, despite three goals on 4 shots. He was getting no help at all.

I am so tired of announcers talking about Cameron's famous "structure". Not much of that visible today. A plodding, feckless mess.

Kingston was fast, strong, and physical.

It was awkward to watch a veteran official, clearly doing his farewell tour, but even he couldn't affect this game.

Yup all that….

The 67’s are now 4th in the East and 9th in the league. I’m watching the last two games, it’s hard to see a team who can make a playoff run.

I can see Kingston making some buyer moves with the weekend they just had. Tip of the hat to Troy Mann who has them playing really hard.

From the rumour mill, there aren’t many sellers in the league right now. Trading Stoney and Mayich would generate huge bidding wars in an OHL Mem cup, many buyer season. Then they turn around and add an OA or two and see where the chips fall this year. Next year, they go in with a war chest of picks and nearly the entire team back to make a run.

Let’s look at that team next year:

Gerrior (OA) - Gardiner - Foster
Pinelli - Whitehead - Uronen
Yanni - Barlas - Dever
Hilton - ??? - Kelly
Houben - Korbler

Marrelli - Mews
Smyth (OA) - Ewles
Dietsch - Brady
Horner

MacKenzie (OA)
Nelson

That is not a Championship contender foundation. IF we sell this year, we sell again next year. Pinelli and Gardiner would garner a very solid return. We then build around our ‘06-‘07-‘08 draft classes. Our assets would support those years, but not next year.

That lineup doesn’t include any players we return in seller deals this year but the types of players we are trading are more likely to return draft picks rather than impact prospect players. We’d likely get a stronger player in the Pinelli deal.

EDIT:
I am not against your plan to sell this year. I think the market may be favourable to do so. I just think the expectation of a contender next year is not all that realistic. If they are a seller this year because they aren’t’ strong enough with all the 18 and 19 year olds, it is not ideal to consider the team to be a contender next year. If we can trade our way into contending next year, we can trade our way into being a contender this year. Either way, I think next year is a seller season.

I would add MacKenzie to your list. There are a couple contender teams that really could use an upgrade and with MacKenzie being a 19 year old, he’s an easier fit than an OA. We finish out the year with Donoso and Nelson. Get Nelson about 5-6 starts in the back half of the season, acquire a cheap OA goalie next year and give Nelson a full year as a backup.

We’d likely end up with two relatively high‘ish 1st rounders in 2024 and 2025 drafts. Add Marrelli and Mews to that mix as the leaders in 2025-26, and I think we could craft a really solid roster in 2025-26 and into 2026-27.

I for one do not think that Stonehouse or Mayich will cause much of a bidding war. Neither of these two have looked particularly good this season. Pinelli is the only one that could cause a lot of interest but he will no be traded this year. Donoso could go but is it worth it, other than giving Mackenzie the starting job.

I could see Stoney and Mayich fetch a little more right at the trade deadline in order for a team to counteract another team's recent acquisitions.

They are okay but not the difference makers like say Beck and Ty Nelson or many others.

Jack Beck update:

I still don't understand why Beck was traded. Just because a player requests a trade does not mean that management has to accommodate him. The word "no" is available, and Beck would have had no option but to come back here and play hard if he wanted a pro contract somewhere next season. He then could have either helped this team compete, or be flipped out at the deadline for the same return he got in September. I know that the 67's pride themselves on being a player friendly organization, but I think that our GM could have benefitted from being a bit more hard nosed in this situation.

Technically, that isn’t true. He was an OA which means he could have gone to school or signed a Pro contract. He did have alternatives.

IMO, any time you have a player that doesn’t want to play on your team, trade him. Why would you want to have a player who is or should be a part of your leadership group that doesn’t want to be here?

They got a very fair return for Beck, especially considering some of the OA returns for wingers.

I think Stonehouse would go for something similar to the group of Harrison, Zhilkin, Dann etc. So, probably two 2nds and two 3rds. Mayich probably something similar to Hache so a 2nd, 4th, 5th with a conditional 2nd and 5th for the OA year. Both of those deals would be very good.

I would only trade Mayich if I recognized next year was another seller year. May as well get the extra picks now.

I still think they can make buyer trades this year but with the way the market seems to be shaping up, I am not sure adding 3-4 players would be viable.

This could happen but we all know requirements and availability will have a lot to do with the value. Things could open up all of a sudden once GMs really decide on their direction to take.

100%. I think you have four teams in the West looking to add. We have no idea about the East. I think there is one team. The question isn’t who is going to buy, I think the question is who is seriously going to sell? Who can seriously sell?

I think there will be one or two surprise sellers. Whether Ottawa is one of them remains to be seen. But, this time last year Boyd was on record saying he was adding. This year? Crickets.

reading this forum had me thinking- kingston needs an oa d man for next year and could still improve defence this year. What if kingston traded for mayich? I doubt they would as they’re you’re biggest rival however stranger things have happened like Lockhart to Oshawa

It is time for making resolutions for next year. I have been watching the "Talkin' Buds Leafs Show" today. That is very painful.

I resolve to not complain about the 67s leadership until at least the playoffs... if we get there. It will be hard to finish behind the Ice Dogs, but the rest is wide open.

I will try not dump on players, but mistakes happen.
