Was really impressed with Dionicio tonight. Didn't realize he was that good but didn't see Windsor much last year.

Not that I care all that much but how does Mayich get a star? He was a -2 and MacKenzie stood on his head.

We got outplayed...
But we didn't have much room to skate our there with the giant size egos of Stewart and Cairns taking up all the ice.
Those guys give penalties based on crossing their instructions more than what actually happens in scrums.

Too many penalties you can not win if you are shorthanded all period.

Saginaw showed what most road game teams do. They threw tight in the first, got their legs, and that was it.

Was puck possession so lopsided we could not get shops

BTW I would not say OS is bad they just shut out kingston
Kingston outplayed them start to finish. George has been the best goalie in the league this year and showed why this game

I think tonight was the prime example why we needed five guys added. I am reasonably certain that Boyd did try to get that fourth guy but couldn’t get it done.

No offence to the Guys I am going to zero in on but Kelly simply doesn’t add enough to the top 9. He needed to be moved to a team that could give him the appropriate amount of ice time. He iwll soon be bumped off by Dever once he is ready. Not having that suitable winger in that one particular spot really hurts the scoring depth with Maillet and Stonehouse.

The second one is the defence. I am not a fan of Marrelli and Mews playing together. I am also not a fan of Mayich being expected to be the puck mover. He does well in the support role. The Seasbrook to Keith sorta role. I really would have liked seeing him beside Mews. I like Sirman beside Mayer. But, Smyth still doesn’t have a role.

I also want to point out that Sirman has impressed quite a bit Since his return to the lineup after missing a good portion of the first half. I mentioned last week that I felt he had a better 17 year old rookie season than Mayich. I think we are seeing that now as well. He is a better puck mover, can join the rush with more confidence and although Mayich is bigger, Sirman plays a bigger game with toughness. Mayich is still probably the better pure defender but I’ve noticed a lot this year he tends to miss his man a lot lately in front. He’s letting guys get inside on him around the crease.

I want to see how the rest of the year plays out but if both Sirman and Mayich were to return for an OA season, I would have no issues trading Mayich if the return was considerably higher which I think it will be.

With Mayer, Ottawa now has five of their six starting d-men as LHS. Too late for a solution now obviously (Brady isn’t good enough yet to crack the top 6) but those kinds of details can cost us. I noticed some fumbled passes last night in the d-zone and neutral zone by our d-men. Playing on the off side isn’t suitable for everyone.

Sirman plays a nice quiet game. Exactly what you’d want in a partner for someone who freewheels like Mayer.

MacKenzie was excellent last night. Saginaw is loaded and overwhelmed us. However, we stayed in the game with them and with some better d-zone/net front coverage and if we had capitalized on some great opportunities in close, who knows?

I’m pretty confident now that we can play with any team in the league.

I honestly think we were in on that Sale/Savard trade. I think the Mayich to Kitchener move was done pending Sale willing to go to Ottawa. Ottawa likely would have traded Ewles, Korbler and the picks for Savard and Sale. That would have resolved the RH/LH issue. It also would have solved the top 9 depth and would have created three scoring lines. Sale wouldn’t go anywhere but Kitchener for some reason.

There was a lot of talk post deadline that Boyd wanted to get more done but couldn’t work the deals because of no trade clauses. So, we are stuck just a little short of where we wanted to be unfortunately.

Ottawa is a competitive team as constructed. I think North Bay is better. Then there is a group of teams that will likely stay somewhat close. Ottawa has a tough couple weeks and then the schedule calms down. We should surge through February and March. I still have the 67’s as division winners but Oshawa has been strong and Brantford hasn’t slowed down. I think Brantford will slow down though.

I am starting to think maybe placing Mayich with Mayer. Sirman can carry the puck so he could maybe be deployed in a different manner with Smyth? Let Sirman play the right side and be the puck mover.

The bottom line is you lacked the defence to stop them, and the goaltending let you down in the battle.
Again Beast at least watch the game. First goal maybe, second goal Holmes with the assist. Has puck behind the net tries to pass it up the middle and hits Waddick right on the tape and he one times it. Vaccari couldn't even move on it and an empty net goal. So goaltending did not let us down. Lack of finish around the Owen Sound net let us down.

Started with a horrible penalty call on Pinelli. Then another bad call on Gardiner after he got his face smashed into the dasher from behind with no call.

If not for horrible officiating to end the game, they wouldn’t have been in position for a loss.

Officiating aside, they need to be better late in the game on the PK.

I didn't have a good view of either penalty call on Pinnelli and Gardiner, since I was sitting in the other side of the rink.
Seems like the officiating had been good up until then.
It was an unnecessary cross-check by Smyth though...
Overall the team will need to be more disciplined then they were this weekend.

The OT 3 on 3 was also very uncharacteristic for this team, giving up a 2 on 0 (on which McKenzie was unbelievable, and then another breakaway seconds later...

The Pinelli penalty maybe seemed horrible but I was sitting at the opposite end and with the ref watching he kept giving little jabs. Why give an opportunity to call a penalty and then everything just snowballed from their.

They played a fairly good game for 55 minutes. Got to clean it up and concentrate on playing hockey for a full 60 minutes.

I’ll choose to look (mostly) on the bright side
- Ottawa played a very strong game over 55 minutes. They had the game under complete control until the very end.
- We got great secondary scoring from Gardiner/Gerrior today. Beauty goals too. I thought they were overmatched against Saginaw but had a good bounce back game today.
- While a few of those late penalties were perhaps questionable, the 67s have to kill those off. The good news - PKing can be coached and improved upon. Regardless, it’s been a poor weekend in terms of discipline or lack thereof.
- Man, Smyth is really having a bad run recently. Bad penalties, losing men in the D-zone…have to wonder when him and Mayich get broken up. Mayich hasn’t looked nearly as good imo since partnering up with Smyth.
- Dever has looked speedy and engaged since returning. he has to finish better though…0 for 2 on breakaways today. He’s going to get a lot of opportunities.
- We need more from Stonehouse.
- Kressler and Pinelli were getting a little too cute for my liking. Simplify things fellas.
- Sirman continues to impress.
- Funny moment in the 2nd when Mayer refused to fight #22 after laying a big hit on an OS player. I don’t like player having to answer the bell for tough but clean hits. Anything that crosses the line…well sure.
- Horner seems like a good teammate.
- healthy scratching our only healthy import is kind of pitiful. Wish Boyd could have found a way to make an enhancement there.

A lot of fine observations. I will add:

1> Stonehouse and Maillet are not good together. Maillet is more a north-south centre. I think Stonehouse on Gardiner’s line with Gerrior would be a much better fit. Dever in a more defensive role with Barlas and Maillet, I think, would be a much better chemistry option. I am not sure Dever will develop that scoring touch. Lots of guys with the great feet and decent hands but no real instinct for scoring goals. Thsoe guys end up being more elite defenders. Dever may fit that category.
2> I am reasonably certain Korbler was supposed to be off to Barrie but I’m not sure we will ever know for sure. Regardless, he will be replaced next year.
3> Putting Mayich and Smyth together is dumb. But, then again, someone needs to bite the bullet. I guess it may as well be Mayich. It is unfortunate in a way. Smyth is a decent puck mover for a big kid. If he at least had a mean streak in him, we could overlook the defensive assignment mishaps.
4> Kelly needs to find a role. HE is the odd man out on a starting roster. He needs to make himself useful.

The only question I have is

When is this team supposed to show the ability that is supposedly picked up with the trades?

What I am seeing is the same thing as pre-Christmas.

If this is the best they are going to do them maybe Boyd should have just sold and started the rebuld.

As I have said about Kingston, thank god the Petes, Barrie, and Niagara are not playing well.

Could be an interesting battle for 7th between Kingston Ottawa and Erie

In all fairness, they are 2-2-1 since the trades and had tough road games followed by one of the best teams in the league on Friday. Not the greatest measuring stick. They should have nailed down the win today but shit happens. The trades weren’t meant to propel this team to the top of the Eastern Conference but to be competitive with the top of the Conference. The West is better for sure. That said, we only had 10 games against the Western Conference teams (including bottom feeders in that conference), with the rest against the eastern Conference. We wouldn’t need to worry about the Western conference in the playoffs until the Final. So, really, the trades were made to stack up against the East. Four of those ten games have now been played. Six remain. Three of those against Sarnia, Flint and Erie, all beatable teams.

Once we get back from Saginaw on the 4th, we will have 4 tough games left on the schedule with the rest being beatable teams. Three of those four tough games at home.

Provided the team finds its chemistry and gets its pairings together optimally, they should have a strong finishing 21 game stretch into the playoffs.

Classic

I kind of feel also that it doesn't really matter this year where they finish in the conference this year.
The quality of the opponent they play in round1 won't really be significantly stronger or weaker.
What they need to do is finish strong and healthy going into the playoffs.

Any suggestions on what to spend a free $100 on?

Pinelli threw a punch at the Attack player after giving him a few relatively very mild crosschecks. It's a penalty that he has taken repeatedly, particularly late in games. He has to realize that these get called and STOP.

The call on Smyth was weak to put us down 2, but that is the standard for the OHL officials group, which has become a stagnant pool of never-wases and never-will-bes.

In OT, MacKenzie makes an all-time game-saver save on a 2-0 breakaway. The result of that was a 2-on-1 the other way. Instead of shooting, our shooter elected to try a pass through the defender, which got picked off. A terrible choice amongst numerous such choices.

I don't like calling out teenagers, but it seems that none of the adults on the bench will do that. Giving up a 5-1 lead in the third period is both a compliment to the Attack (who never gave up) and a cause for soul-searching by the home team (which won't happen). So much for "structure".

Pinelli really needs to cut it out with the dumb s**t in scrums and after the whistle. I get that he's trying to create some room for himself out on the ice, but imho its a bad look for a captain to be consistently involved in that stuff and putting him and his team at risk of a penalty being called.

The team left MacKenzie out to dry in OT. After the huge save on Barlow on the 2-man breakaway, the forwards need to pick up their goaltender in that situation and go in and win the game (or at least force the other goalie to make a huge save). We had our best passer and best shooter on a 2-on-1 and they couldn't make it work.

I missed the Gardiner penalty as I was sitting far across the rink. The Smyth penalty is going to get called 90% of the time in this league.
