Would really like to see them add a physical winger, a big body that can crash and bang a little, position themselves in front of the net and make some space for the skill guys.

I do feel they have an open’ish spot available to fill it so I like that idea!

I think many of the opposition teams fans underestimate the overall impact of adding the two centres. i think they are about to face quite the shock at how well this will impact the team.

I still have NB And Sudbury ahead of Ottawa on paper. We shall see how the division plays out.

I agree with your assessment.

For the first half of the season, we were playing with 3 actual centres (Gardiner, Lawrence and Whitehead), all of him were miscast in the roles they were forced to play. Whitehead is a 16-year old rookie who should normally seeing limited 4th line minutes. Gardiner is a good middle-6 centre - defensive responsible, good skater, smooth stickhandler and puck distributor, but in no way an elite offensive talent. Lawrence is a prototypical checking line centre/winger who was forced to center our top scoring line. Getting Gardiner slotted into a centre role more aligned with his skillset, replacing Lawrence with a more skilled offensive player to get more of out of Pinelli/Stonehouse, and getting another veteran centre to boot, was a smart move by Boyd.

What would it cost to pry Melee out of Peterborough?

Petes have only one card left. They aren’t likely to move a body out.

BUT, if we want to do this as a hypothetical exercise, I think you look at the Veccia deal as the most likely comparable… 2nd, 3rd, 5th and conditional 4th for an OA year.

Does anyone know when Collin Mackenzie is due back? You hate to rip a kid for being injured, but he has had a tough go of it on the injury front and one of the first things pro scouts look at is durability. You know the old line - the best ability is often availability. Getting him healthy for this second half of the season will be huge, along with integrating the new players acquired. Give Boyd credit - he completely remade the roster, and gave this group a chance to compete. Now let's see what they can do - hopefully this influx lifts the game of guys like Stonehouse, Mews and Marelli...

I’d love to see a prominent Import addition but I doubt it will happen at this point. It doesn’t look like Erie wanted to make any deals. Misiak seemed to be a big target. OShawa feels good about Kumpalainen returning so he wasn’t available. Sale would only go to Kitchener. I’m not sure what other Import on a seller team would have moved the needle in a significant way.

The imports in the league seem way down this year.

If Uronen is willing to return next year, Ottawa would be hard pressed to upgrade on him in the second round of the import draft. If he’s near a PPG player, he’d be worth at least a second round pick at next year’s deadline.

Agreed. I think the idea would be to flip Korbler in the deal for the Import coming in. I’m not sold on him returning next year anyway.

Ewles to Flint for a 2025 3rd and 4th...

Good return…. Especially for a 5th round pick that jsut couldn’t quite fit inot the Cameron system. I am sure he will have more success in Flint. Good puck mover and solid skater. Turns over the puck too much in the system we have in Ottawa which creates some opposition scoring opportunities.

Well, if that is it for Ottawa and it seems likely, that last trade helped to fill in some draft pick holes nicely.

For 2024, we are missing a 2nd and a 4th. But we have the comp 1st which fills the hole in the 2nd round, we have two 5ths so that sort of makes up for missing the 4th round pick and we have the extra 7th which makes up for missing the 6th pick. So, 2024 draft doesn’t look too bad.

The two picks in this latest deal fill in the holes int he 2025 draft, with the exception of the 9th round pick.

The 2026 draft is a little baron (2nd - 3rd - 4th - 12th missing) but, we will recoup those picks next deadline for sure.

The 2027 draft is only missing a 3rd and a 5th.

Al Lin all, we escaped pretty well from the deadline with draft picks mostly intact when you look at it more closely. We added three key players that will help us this year. We should be set up well to win the division and make it to round 2. After that, I am not sure. But, it will be a fun finish to the season.

The next two years will be lean but it is all a part of Junior hockey. With any luck, we will get that arena plan approved and they can break ground soon.

I take exception to some of your analysis.

Brantford:
The Bulldogs sold Donovan. He may very well be the top D-Man in the League, at least the top 19 year old anyway. HB in Kitchener may have something to say about being the top D-Man overall. That is a huge sell off piece for them. That is 25-30 minutes per game of stellar contribution wiped right off the board. they also traded Van Vleit who is another key D-Man for that team. They added Sobovilev, so that is a nice replacement piece but still doesn’t come close to helping replace the two guys they traded away.

Kingston:
Kingston added Dubois. Nice little piece for sure. He will help then at both ends of the ice Which is what they need. That move improves them. How much? Not sure how much one individual piece helps but they will battle for sure.

Oshawa:
They added Punnett. IMO, he was the top OA D-Man available. He will help them for sure. They will battle as well.

Ottawa:
I will simply point to what Sirius said. Not only do we add the two capable centres that will give us additional offence but sliding the wingers back to the wing and giving others a more capable centre will also add to the offence for those players. So, for Ottawa, this is not just adding the offence from the centres, but also at least a 50% increase added to 2 of the wingers. It is like adding three key forwards. Mayer, if nothing else, will stabilize the top 4 and ensure that we don’t have incapable D-Men playing above their station. He will also be the PP#1 guy that we have needed. He, alone, will add 5% at least to our PP.

Peterborough:
They will struggle to win games. Period. They are now the weakest team in the conference. They will not make the playoffs. The question really is whether they will slip below Niagara who has a considerably better roster right now. I think the Petes will end up in last place in the league. I think their under-over for points is 46 to finish the year.

In light of all that, I think Brantford has pushed themselves out of the race as of today. Oshawa and Kingston have marginally improved. Ottawa has dramatically improved. You have to consider Ottawa the front runner for the division as of this morning. The deadline is later today so that landscape could change. I don’t see it changing too much though.
what about North Bay??

I have to say that he was definitely the odd man out. He struggled to play the way that Cameron wanted. He was too passive in front of his own net and made some strange decisions when moving the puck. Maybe a different environment will help him develop.

Good for Ewles and good for the 67’s. There are still lots of D available if need be.

I’m impressed by the good work this deadline. They can win the conference with this lineup if they catch a few breaks.

what about North Bay??

North Bay and Sudbury will finish 1-3 seeds. They will likely play each other in the Eastern Conference Final. The caveat being that DiVin fully returns to form. MacK could stand on his head as he tends to do and sort of upset in the playoffs. Goaltending may be a difference maker one way or the other.

Sudbury improved but there is still something about that team that concerns me a bit. I give the edge to NB for now.
