So, Ottawans, what kind of player are we getting in Teddy Sawyer ?

He must be a late birth .

Hes listed on the 67s site as 18, hisbirth year suggests he's 19 ?
Thanks

Solid dman. Probably a middle pairing guy. Likes to play physical and won’t shy away from a tilt. Turns 19 before the holidays.

My $$$ is on Sawyer being traded for a 2nd and 4th Plus a conditional 3rd (OA next year).

I was pretty close. I figured Sawyer’s reputation outpaced his production. I was reasonably certain they’d get a 2nd and another pick.

Going to be interesting to see who steps up into Sawyers's role.

As OMG said it is going to be interesting to see who plays and how well they play for the next 9 games. That could also give us an idea of what this team is going to look like.

As to Boucher it would not surprise me to see him up for the 9 games in Ottawa

Be careful what you wish for. If Boucher were to spend 9 games with the Sens, he’s more likely to get sent to Belleville.

I think he plays on Friday and gets sent back to the 67’s. By all accounts, he has had a solid preseason with the Sens. He has opened some eyes but I think everyone recognizes he hasn’t played a lot of hockey the last two seasons and needs front line minutes in the OHL to develop his play with the puck so he doesn’t end up just a 3rd line banger.

I really think the Sens will take the approach with him to try to develop him as a 3rd wheel top six forward the goes and gets pucks and crashes to make room for the more skilled guys.

He will be back with the 67’s. No need to worry about that. He needs to find some sort of offensive consistency again.

I guess I need to revise my lineup for Friday considering the trade and the liklihood of Boucher not being returned.

Beck - Rohrer - Pinelli
TJ - Tolnai - Kelly
Gerrior - Gardiner - Stonehouse
Sirman - Foster - Quick

Mayich - Matier
Costantini - GillShane
Smyth - Mews

The removal of Sawyer gets Ottawa down to 25 bodies so they don’t have to send anyone down. I originally thought they could only keep 23 but it looks like it is 25. Cameron will use the first couple weeks to continue to evaluate. We’ll see a revolving door of players in and out of the lineup.

The Sawyer trade tells me that this will be a re-tool year for the team. Contenders don't move 19 year old, tough competitors like Teddy. I'm good with the direction. The 67's are scheduled to move into the new arena in the Fall of 2024. By retooling this year, they can set themselves up for another 2-3 year run like they just had.

Our draft pick situation is tremendous. The below chart doesn't figure in the return for Will Cranley, which a Flint fan said was a 3rd and 5th round pick. Since I don't have the exact picks, they weren't included. I also subtracted the conditionals from the Moldenhauer trade, as it sure doesn't look like he'll be reporting to Sarnia or anywhere in the league. After the Sawyer trade, here's a snapshot of the draft pick cupboard:

Good summary of picks BP. Correlates with the records I keep. The only thing I would add is I think we get our own third back in 23. It was a conditionnal to Oshawa in the Dylan Robinson trade which I suspect was if he played an OA year. As he did not we likely get it back ( can't be 100%sure though). Was wondering about the return for Cranley, a 3rd and 5th would be great. Anyway by my count in the next 4 years we have 7 seconds, 8 thirds ( not counting any return for Cranley/Moldenhauer). This is where I disagree BP. Imo trading Sawyer is not an indication of a retool, only a result of numbers on D. I still think we're gonna upgrade significantly at some point this year and Boyd will weaponize some of those picks. We have enough to make us a factor this year, maybe retool a bit next year and go for it in 24/25, 25/26.

This team is built to compete this year. HOWEVER! There are four other top tier teams in our conference. How Ottawa shapes up agaisnt those teams will be a strong deciding factor of whether we make a strong push. The Petes have two vacant OA spots. We have one.

I think we need to prove capable of keeping pace int he fist half. I don’t think we could or should trade to leapfrog considering at least two of the other four teams will likely also make a push. So we would not only need to leapfrog teams above us but also leapfrog them after they make their buyer moves. May be tough.

I believe Cranley will be a 3rd and 5th but not sure what years.

We have the ammunition to make deals if we want to. It will take a little more time for the market to free up and players we need become available.

BP Stonehouse is double-shifted??????
This team is built to compete this year next year we are not going to have a lot at center.

Sawyer was as I said a case of not who we wanted to get rid of but who the market wanted.

We are going to be competitive this year but as OMG said so are a lot of other teams in the conference.

Whether we are a buyer or seller at a small level will depend on nowhere we are and how far Boyd and Cameron think this team can go.

If for instance we are going to be a mid standing team and a team offered a bonafide starting center Boucher then it makes sense to sell.

But if we are competitive and a top 4 team we might keep him and trade for a role player.

Mews is playing as a fill in and place holder for 1 game as I think after the Friday game Boucher will be returned.

This allows the second and possibly 3rd line to start the season together and grow.

Sens will keep Boucher until the end of the NHL pre-season schedule eight days from now just to keep depth around. (NHL is quickly becoming like the NFL in that they don't want the regulars seeing too much action in meaningless pre-season tilts.) Just as soon as pre-season ends, though, you'll see him coming East on the 417 and back to the 67's. There is simply no room for him on the Sens main roster right now. They could send him to Belleville, but at 19 the smart play is to send him to junior to play top line minutes and learn how to score.

Boucher and the Sens have options, the 67's will need to operate on the premise that he is not returning until the day that he is returned; it will be whatever the Sens determine is best. Boucher is never going to be an elite scorer, his strengths are along the walls and across the top of the crease, both areas where competition against men would be beneficial... a lot will come down to maturity and where they assess his confidence as being right now.

The return on Sawyer was good, better than I would have expected, and should make things easier to navigate on D now:
Mayich-Matier
Sirman-Costantini
Smyth-Gill-shane
Mews-Ewles
Marelli (Jr.A)
I still question the need for Costantini, move Gill-shane to the 2nd line and Ewles into the 3rd puts Mews and Marrelli in the 7&8 spots where they belong. But smarter minds than I will determine this.

On forward they will need to figure out how to establish a 1st & 2nd line that can hold their own against the other top lines in the league, especially without Boucher.
Beck-Tolnai-Rohrer
Johnston-Pinelli-Stonehouse
Gerrior-Gardiner-Barlas
Quick-Foster-Dever/Kelly
The first line has to be strong enough to keep teams honest, if a team thinks they can get away with their 2nd or 3rd holding against them the mismatches against the third/fourth line will be significant. I really don't think forcing a D to try to fit into the forward group is a good idea right now, it's a Band-Aid to keep a D player happy but impacts the unity up front. They need to build confidence in the forward group, if they are testing the waters with Quick, Foster and Dever then they need to allow them to make a few mistakes, pushing Sirman up only second guesses their abilities.

I should add one thing on Boucher, he has an NHL level shot so scoring goals will come in the right situation.

I do not know why we are all speculating what will happen with Boucher. Maybe the Sens and Boyd already have an agreement in place. I think he should play in the OHL to get top line minutes and hone his skills in order to become a complete player. I hope he does come back as the 67s need his tenascious attitude.

I am sure that Boyd and Cameron have a good idea what is happening with Boucher and are building the team dependent on what they know.

I think there were some good ideas about what was happening with Kasper and as is the case in hockey, just when you think you have it figured out; It Changes. I expect Boucher to return, this team will still have some maneuvering to do one way or the other.

Dorion was quite clear a while ago that the plan was for Boucher to go back to junior so I'm not worried. I think they give him a game tonight but would not be surprised he's in the lineup for the home opener sunday.
