Isles fan here. Do you think he's worthy of a contract by the isles. Is there any part of his game that needs improving
Yes I believe they will sign him. He is presently the OHL leading scorer so offense is there. Size and strength may hold him back from the NHL but he will be a good AHL player. He has tons of speed so the potential is there with conditioning to make the NHL.

It was the 2003 class that missed their draft year.
Apparently, it takes more than accumulating points in the OHL at 19-20 to earn a contract. Unlike Burke (Sarnia), NHL teams did not not believe Hardie & Morrison warranted one of their 50 contracts allowed. Some or all of the following OAs are also unsigned free agents; Vierling, Cardwell, Maggio, MacDonald, Avery, McGurn, Piercy, …
Size and skating were an issue for Morrison and Hardie, Burke was purely skating but obviously showed enough in the last year plus in the OHL and at development camps to earn a contract. Cardwell and Maggio were both drafted last year D+1, so there teams have until this draft to sign them. Vierling was drafted and unsigned, he didn't get a chance to demonstrate his skills during covid which likely hurt him. The others will need to go the long route to get there.

Update I’ve been told Tyler Boucher will return to the 67’s lineup sooner than most thought. Surgery not required rehab going excellent
Good news all around if it works out - obviously he helps the team significantly, and Boucher himself needs a strong run for his development and to show the Sens that he is ready for the AHL next season.

He got screwed by the covid year. That being said, Dallas had him in camp last fall so I would not be surprised if they make him an offer later this year.
True - that group of 2003 birth year players took it on the chin for the cancelled season.

Related, I have never felt worse for a group of kids than I did for the 2019-20 Ottawa 67's. That team was heading for the Memorial Cup when the season got cancelled. I heard Frederic Andree being interviewed about it one time on TSN 1200 and he sounded like he needed a hug. Can't blame him...

I see Ottawa is playing Gatineau today. I understand they are geographically close to one another, but what is the history behind this game? And does it count toward the standings for both teams?

Counts as part of the 68 game schedule, the history is they started having the games in pre-season and gradually introduced a home and home as part of the regular season schedule for both teams in 2017/18. It generates some local interest and usually has good attendance. If anyone has ever been to a game it has a very interesting dynamic, good intensity for a mid-season showcase.

There is a nice article on the OHL website about it too:

Heading to the game tonight. Can't wait! Typically these games are a little, err, spirited, which makes it a shame that Tyler Boucher isn't playing...

Well 67s have yourselves a large slice of humble pie.

Truly uninspired effort tonight for what was billed as a natural rivalry game, the sort that you should not need to get pumped up for. Well they certainly looked like they were neither inspired or pumped up.

Nights like tonight happen when one team shows up and the other does not. When one team plays hard and the other thinks their press clippings will be the only effort required. When one team plays tough and the other acts tough - what is with Gerrior at the end of every play getting into a scrum ? And one team has a goaltender and other does not.

Clearly a month after deadline, Minty is more offensive potential than the team (players and Coach included) knows what to do with. Obviously those who campaigned for an additional depth forward at the deadline are being proven right. The experiment of trying to get by while enduring a couple of injuries, with using the D-men playing forward (and I think Sirman has overachieved on the wing) has run its course. Also proving true would be that Gerrior is not a top 6 player - you can see the frustration on most shifts with Morrison and Beck's reactions over the inability for him to feel/sense/see the play. And lastly, tonight was very much like a playoff game and it would appear that the moment was too big for the Ewles, Marrelli and Mews, the latter of whom has been MIA coming into the 2nd half of the season after a stellar start to his career.

Have loved the effort, results and enthusiasm that has been the 67s calling card all season so tonight, in response to a real test, they were flat and lacked much of what has been their identity all season. I would like to dismiss as simply one bad game, but the number of things that were exposed tonight against a very good and aggressive hockey team, have to be a concern.

I think the game illustrated how much more physical a league th Q is. It's simply better hockey. It's far more realistic in simulating the pro game. Will be very interesting to see what happens Saturday.

They came out very uninspired for a game like this. With the powerplays they had in the first they should of at least potted 1 if not 2 goals. Gatineau could just push them off the puck with ease and we had no response. Gatineau's first 2 goals could have been prevented if the D put in some kind of an effort.

I thought Lapenna made some very key saves at opportune times.

Cameron has to come up with a new plan if he wants more positive results come Saturday. I agree that the Q hockey is much more physical and the 67s never have any size/grit over the years to play these type of games. A lot of people say speed will overcome the physicality but you need a couple of big willing players to keep everyone honest.

Playoffs are coming and this is when the physicality will show who has the tools necessary to compete.

I was there last night. Ugh - boys coughed up a fur ball in a huge game.

Boy, was I unimpressed with Morrison - he was completely invisible. OTOH, Minty is a really impressive player - easily the best NHL prospect on the ice for either team.

Hate to pick on the goaltender, but I'm going to pick on the goaltender. Five goals on 24 shots isn't getting it done against anyone - Donoso was fighting the puck all night. That wrap around goal was kind of indicative of his night - gets caught out of position, and had no ability to recover. Going forward, I think Cameron has to start getting MacKenzie ready to shoulder the load in the playoffs - he has been the better goaltender all year, TBH, and that was obvious last night.

Yeah, a game like last night's certainly has me worried as we come down the stretch drive and into the playoffs. No push back, and the 67s had nothing at all to match the physicality that Gatineau brought last night. The pessimist in me says that if the 67s bring that kind of game to a conference final against North Bay (assuming we get there...a big "if" of course), its lights out for us.

Getting Boucher and Smyth back will help, but as much as I like Boucher he's not a silver bullet and he alone can't solve this team's major issue, which is playing against fast, physical teams. What having Boucher back will help with is what you touched on, and that's moving Gerrior down the lineup into a role he's better suited for and giving Morrison and Beck a winger better able to keep up with them offensively. I've liked Gerrior a lot this season (stupid penalty in the o-zone last night aside), but he's a 3rd liner, not a 1st liner. Having Smyth back will boost the defense corps by (probably) shuffling Marrelli out of the lineup; Marrelli has been good as a 16-year old and will be a stud for us a couple of seasons down the road, but has been obviously running out of steam as of late and is getting exposed defensively regularly. Mews hasn't been much better, but at least brings some good offensive ability to the bottom of the D group. Smyth/Mews would be a 3rd pairing I'd be comfortable with in the playoffs...two 16-year olds? Not so much.

And where has Foster been? And why does Cameron insist on dressing 11 forwards (with one of them being a defenseman)?

I was there too, and it was ugly. Mintyukov is an incredible player, really a treat to watch. As for Morrison, I agree with respect to last night, but overall I think he's been really good for the 67s so far. Gatineau played him really tight last night, which was the right call as the Rohrer line couldn't get much going. He needs a better RW...Gerrior (no offense to him at all) can't hang with Morrison and Beck. I'd try Stonehouse on Morrison's right side.

I'm torn on Donoso; he seems to rise to the occasion in certain big games (the two London games come to mind...even though we lost, he was really good; and the two Sarnia games). Then he falls apart in other games. The wrap-around goal was a head-scratcher. MacKenzie seemed to be on his game last night, though his puck handling early in the 3rd nearly led to a Gatineau goal. He'll probably start vs. Niagara tonight, so let's see how it goes.

This is so relatable. Had that vibe in London too and that long playoff run could have helped with some guys long term development for sure ( thinking Ryan Merkley in particular )
One of the great games at Bud Gardens that season was Knights 67s excitement from puck drop to the final horn.

I still say we needed Tyler Savard as a major piece to our puzzle. He can contribute offensively, can handle the fisticuffs and will keep people honest when they start acting too aggressive. No use crying over lost opportunities, what we have now will bring us to the promise land or exit early from playoff contention.

Gerrior does nothing for the first line and hinders Morrison and Beck due to his lack of offensive capabilities. The only time Gerrior looked comfortable has been with Barlas.

No doubt, 67s got their butts kicked last night - was there too.

Some weaknesses were exposed and weren't sharp, but let's keep in mind and in perspective that this was one game.
Same goes for Donoso, it was one game. Overall he is very consistent and always in good position. I also like that we have a great backup for when those games happen.

I think also we were the better team in the 3rd, but the game was out of reach by then.

As far as playoffs go, I think this helps. It was a playoff type game last night and the 67s got that lesson, without it actually costing us a playoff game. Other OHL teams aren't getting that experience / lesson in February.

What is important is that they bounce back in "the next playoff game" on Saturday, in an environment that will be the most "hostile" they will likely face for the rest of the season. The game in Gatineau is sold out and it will be loud in there. Character will be tested for sure.
