Maybe I'm in the minority but Calgary got D.Hamilton at 5 years 5.5m for a first and a 2nd.

Ottawa gets two 1st rders, 2nd rd, prospect and two roster players for a 1 year rental Karlsson in a year that the team was going to be awful with or without him. Not to mention Ottawa was not retaining Karlsson even if they handed him the keys to the city

I really did not want any part of EK because of the price ...... but now I think we could have made it work :) lol he would not have fit in the cap but I was expecting a bigger return...

In the last 1.5 years, the Sens have done enough things to fill what would be the most rivetting hockey book even written.

Now its Chia's turn. Calling it now:
Nurse for a 2nd and a 2024 7th rounder conditional upon the Oilers winning the Stanley cup and Klefbom scoring 65 points.
Heard it here first.

Conditions of the trade as per NHL.com

The deal also includes two conditional picks:
  • Should the Sharks sign Karlsson to a contract extension, Ottawa receives San Jose's second-round selection in 2021, which would upgrade to a first-round selection (not lottery protected) if San Jose reaches the Stanley Cup Final in 2019.
  • If Karlsson is on an Eastern Conference roster (reserve list) during the 2018-19 season, the Senators will receive an additional first round pick from the Sharks no later than 2022.

That's Dorion thinking he's smart covering his ass after being made a fool in the Hoffman trade.

Meanwhile, they handed him a bag of spare parts while he was looking at the fine print.

Well done

no extension part of the deal

That probably the major thing everyone seems to overlook right now.

Does anybody really believe that a team wouldn't have beaten that offer easily if Karlsson would have been willing to extend with them?

Really?

Thats why Pacioretty got decent value and thats why the EK trade looks like it looks right now...

EK wants to either hit UFA at all costs or simply does not want to extend with any team right now that was in the mix.

This is basically San Jose trading for a rental for now and going all-in...

Thats why this looks like a rental return because it is...

So;

Chris Tiernay
Dylan Demelo
Josh Norris
Rudolfs Balcers
1st 2019 OR 2020 (Not sure whose choice it is)
2nd 2020
2nd 2021 (Becomes a 1st if Erik Karlsson re-signs with SJS)
1st in 2021 or 2022 (OTT receives if Karlsson plays for Eastern team in 2018-19) [ ]

for

Erik Karlsson
Francis Perron
The 2019 first is Buffalo's.

That last conditional pick is awesome. That's a great little piece tacked on. What could you possibly laugh about that particular caveat? Unless I read it wrong, if he signs with an Eastern team, we get another 1st. Lol?

Because it is based on whether SJ trades him THIS season. It isn't about whether he signs with an Eastern team next off-season.

Maybe that's it? Maybe EK doesn't want to re-sign in SJ?

I could see it. It's an older team. Burns is in his thirties. Pavelski is as well. Thornton is old as dirt. Vlasic is 31. Couture is the youngest and I think he's like 29?

And then you have Evander Kane and Tomas Hertl - good, young-ish players but neither are worldbeaters. Maybe this is for one last swing for the fences for SJ.

I really think we're still in this thing, come July. Travis Yost just tweeted something to that effect, that this could be a pure rental.

Let's hope SJ gets old overnight and can't make a reasonable pitch.

The real winners today are the Colorado Avalanche. Ottawa is tanking while the Aves have their pick.
hehehe

As for people saying "best case scenario is they have a 20% chance at Hughes"

While yes, that is true. However the whole thing is just a gallon of gravy. We make the playoffs and we have a top pick with the potential for Hughes and the top guys. We miss the playoffs and we have two picks with the potential for Hughes.

Even as a rental... EK returns a blue chip prospect...
maybe not. its a new NHL with a hard cap. teams arent going to throw away great talent for a what if. not anymore picks yes. if EK were to have signed an extension then yes there would definitely be

I love how there is a conditional pick basically saying don’t screw us over like you did last month okay?

Colorado has to be licking their chops. They are going to have a legit chance at landing Hughes.

Their chance is still no better than 20%. And really, hasn't shifted much on this. As they were, the Sens were likely a bottom-3 team (the only team that finished behind them last year has improved, the Sens had already lost their best sniper). This trade moves them from likely last to even more likely last. But last is still only an 18% chance at Hughes. Very little changed for Colorado today.

Such is life in the cap world. Ottawa couldn't provide singed Karlsson and teams aren't ready to give up their farm for a guy who's only a year with the team. Even if that guy is Karlsson.

I love seeing the people who claim X superstar will bring back two firsts, two A prospects and a top 4 D/top 6 F and they are proven so f-ing wrong.
