Ottawa may not get a single draft pick in 2019 in return for Erik Karlsson.

Edit: Wrong. They get a 2019 2nd. Thought it was 2020 for some reason

That Hoffman clause.... Priceless.

"If Karlsson is on an Eastern Conference roster (reserve list) during the 2018-19 season, the Senators will receive an additional first round pick from the Sharks no later than 2022."

Conditions of the trade as per NHL.com

The Senators acquired four players: centre Josh Norris (San Jose's 2017 19th overall draft choice), forward prospect Rudolfs Balcers, centre Chris Tierney and defenceman Dylan DeMelo.

The deal includes the following:
  • Ottawa receives San Jose's first-round choice in either 2019 or 2020 (not lottery protected); if the Sharks miss the playoff in 2018-19 it will be a 2019 selection, otherwise it will be in 2020.
  • Ottawa receives a second-round choice in the 2019 draft from San Jose (which will be the higher of the two picks the Sharks currently own, the Florida Panthers and their own);
The deal also includes two conditional picks:
  • Should the Sharks sign Karlsson to a contract extension, Ottawa receives San Jose's second-round selection in 2021, which would upgrade to a first-round selection (not lottery protected) if San Jose reaches the Stanley Cup Final in 2019.
  • If Karlsson is on an Eastern Conference roster (reserve list) during the 2018-19 season, the Senators will receive an additional first round pick from the Sharks no later than 2022.

Maybe that's it? Maybe EK doesn't want to re-sign in SJ?

I could see it. It's an older team. Burns is in his thirties. Pavelski is as well. Thornton is old as dirt. Vlasic is 31. Couture is the youngest and I think he's like 29?

And then you have Evander Kane and Tomas Hertl - good, young-ish players but neither are worldbeaters. Maybe this is for one last swing for the fences for SJ.

Sounds like no extension, which explains the low quality return.

So;

Chris Tiernay
Dylan Demelo
Josh Norris
Rudolfs Balcers
1st 2019 OR 2020 (Not sure whose choice it is)
2nd 2020
2nd 2021 (Becomes a 1st if Erik Karlsson re-signs with SJS)
1st in 2021 or 2022 (OTT receives if Karlsson plays for Eastern team in 2018-19) [ :laugh: ]

for

Erik Karlsson
Francis Perron

It's a 2019 2nd isn't it?

He must be telling teams "I am 10000% testing free agency on July 1". That is the only way this makes any sense and even then it's borderline on sanity.

Nothing stopping the Sharks from still flipping him to an eastern team, getting a new 1st from them, and giving their sure to be worse 1st rounder to the Sens lol
