How many teams have the depth to cover injuries to their top 2 centres? Thats just ridiculous expectations if you think you can simply plug those types of holes with depth players
You can’t fully replace production but ideally each player slots up one slot. Unfortunately when your #1 RD gets hurt and the player slotting up into that 1RD spot is Hamonic or Zaitsev, you’re going to have a bad time. Pinto can slide up when one of Norris/Stutzle is out, but obviously, yes, you don't have a 4C that can slide into your top 6 without having a FUBAR cap situation. Ideally you have a top-6 W that can slide in and center the second line in a pinch. But yes, there are obviously limits to it.

Wow, this is super expensive for the player. kudos to the agent!
18 mil for a non essential player..
I suppose no player is truly "essential". Doctors, nurses, firemen, police officers. Those are essential.
Zub is a fireman!

Marc Methot signed for a higher AAv, salary and total contract value at a time when the salary cap was $11m lower than it was now. Just like Zub, his primary job was putting out fires.

Keeping the puck out of your own net seems like a pretty essential part of the game to me. Well, since the 80's ended anyway. Zub at $4.6m AAv is a bargain.

A comparable for Zub's contract would be Carlo...who signed a 6 year deal at $4.1m AAv - but the first 2 years were RFA years For the final 4 (UFA) seasons he is paid $18.6m.

Giroux should be able to play center and I think he would be a better fit than Brass, brass and Pinto could play #2 and #3 c for now with both Stu and Norris out. That would be as good replacements as any team would have for their #1 and #2c out simultaneously!

I guess you're trolling. While in retrospect we should have extended him to 7 or 8 years around 3 million aav a couple of years ago this is a very good deal now. I am pretty sure he would have got 5+ M as a ufa...

Overpayment but w/e its Ottawa gotta take what you can get.
It is not an overpayment lol. It's an underpayment. Why do you think it's an underpayment? Just not familiar with the player?

A lot of us (who, you know....watch him) thought it would be 5.5.
