Oh he DEFINITELY stood on Brady's shoulders. Look at what he and his cronies accomplished without Brady. Nothing.
I will give him this--he somehow turned compensatory draft picks into a regular replenishment of talent around Brady. He let other teams spend gobs of money on Brady's supporting cast and just...went out and drafted/developed new ones. It worked like hell, so long as Brady was the guy at the center of it all.
I look forward to the New England Patriots being as irrelevant as they were when I was growing up. They had a member of that stellar 1983 QB draft class, a 1985 Super Bowl appearance, and they were STILL completely irrelevant. I hope they even go back to those silly white helmets and red jerseys with the Minuteman in a three-point stance as their logo.
The old uniforms are better than the current NFL Europe ones.
The making it work part involved getting Brady to play for substantially less than his market value. But there were times it didnt go towards anything.
The thing about Belichicks fraud (other than being overrated) is that "pretend to not care act" was just that. If you want to see how insecure he actually really was go read up on some of the stories about spygate. He was freaking out that his reputation would take a tumble.
