Big lead. Low pitch count. No reason not to go out there in the 8th and see how it goes. And the lockout isn't to blame because Roberts has done this before to other pitchers so it's not like he wouldn't have pulled him under normal circumstances. He would have.

Dave Roberts is pulling Kershaw after 7 perfect innings, 80 pitches.

If this is the modern game I don't approve.

Remember when 120 was the norm, and guys like Sutton, Hooten and John would go 9 or more when they were on, still hungover from the night before? I know it's April, but come on, give him a chance.

I mean, the lockout is the reason Kershaw isn’t built up to 100+ pitches by this point…seems pretty directly related. Considering Roberts let Kershaw choose to go back out for the 7th and let Kershaw choose how many pitches he wanted to throw, I have a hard time believing Roberts would have done this if this happened after a normal spring following a normal winter where Kershaw wasn’t rehabbing an elbow injury.

You're implying Roberts would let Kershaw go 100+ pitches if they had a full spring training. If you want to see Roberts doing it to other pitchers look up Rich Hill's perfect game through 7 in 2016 and Ross Stripling's no-hitter that turned into an extra innings loss after Roberts yanked him.

Kershaw has been throwing 90-100 pitches by this time of year almost every season where there wasn’t a lockout that caused an extremely truncated spring training. Roberts very clearly let Kershaw set his own limits today. Not sure why this is even up for debate.

And the one that Ross Stripling says to this say was the right decision? Ok.

Kershaw didn't even pick up a baseball for 3 months because he didn't know if he'd need TJ surgery or not. Kershaw himself said it was the right call.

Yeah, 90-100 before the 7th inning. Kershaw said he would have liked to have continued, but then talked about not being selfish. Sounds like he was ready to keep going.

But did he tell him he didn't want to go back out for the 8th with the perfect game still going?

I have no idea what he said after the 7th but he pretty clearly told Roberts what he wanted after the 6th. Do you have any evidence whatsoever that Kershaw did want to go back out and Roberts told him no? Or is it just sheer speculation?

Everything discussed here is speculation. Kershaw's not gonna say shit about his manager. He never has. Roberts isn't going to say shit either. His response was pretty vague. Maybe they felt that way in 6th inning, but the 7th went pretty damn smooth. So who knows what was said but a perfect game is an extremely rare event in baseball. Seems unusual to just let it go because of analytics. But then again, Roberts did start Yu Darvish in game 7 of the World Series because it was "his turn to pitch."

No, Kershaw and Roberts saying exactly what they talked about is not “speculation.” If Kershaw disagreed with the decision he could have not said anything other than “it’s the manager’s call” or something like that. Kershaw’s season ended last year because of an elbow injury. Kershaw had a PRP injection because of it. He didn’t touch a baseball until January, and had barely thrown during the spring. The lockout shortened his spring even more. This was his first start of the season. There are 157 games to go for a team that is trying to win a championship and this a very thin rotation as it is. But, sure. Throw him back out there when his arm isn’t built up.

Lol @ this being scapegoated as “analytics.” If “analytics” is “making a collaborative, sensible decision that takes into accounts all of the above factors in order to account for the health of a prominent player for a team trying to win a championship,” then sure, “analytics.”

Kershaw was laughing and smiling all throughout the 6th and 7th innings before and after being pulled. We've watched Kershaw for long enough to know from his body language when he's trying to get Dave to leave him in the game and this was not one of those times.

When have you ever seen a pitcher joking around with his teammates during the 6th inning of a no hitter? He knew he wasn't going 9 and it was abundantly clear he was genuinely fine with the decision.

And its not "analytics." He hadn't thrown 80 pitches in 10 months, he ended last season with an elbow injury, it was 40 degrees. There is a very real chance that a UCL injury would be career ending for him. No brainer in my book.

Why isn't he doing a conditioning stint in the minors if his arm is such a worry right now?

It was a perfect game. What's one more pitch?

No, you’re right. Much more important to try to get a perfect game than give yourself the best chance to win a championship.
Kershaw is not a key component to winning a championship at this point in his career. You can't possibly be that dense. He likely won't even be available come October. His body has been a liability for a while now. So why not chase history? It's a few more pitches for the single most rare event in any sport.

You do know how rare a perfect game is in baseball right?

Significantly more rare than 7 perfect innings.

Significantly more rare than UCL injuries.

He didn't just need "one more pitch"

It would have been 20 minutes waiting in the dugout trying to keep the arm warm while the Dodgers batted in the 8th. Then going out and throwing warm up pitches, then having to get 3 more guys out, then 20 more minutes in the dugout, then more warm up pitches, then 3 more guys out. All the while he's exhausted and every successive pitch is less and less effective while the injury risk rises significantly.

That’s news to the Dodgers when they paid him $17m to be the #3 in the rotation. It’s too bad Friedman didn’t have you there to save him the time and effort.
