I think it was more of Ellis and not elway. Ellis didn’t like Mike and that sealed that

I‘m not saying you’re wrong but I think Ellis was instrumental in hiring Josh, which is probably the worst coaching hire in the history of the Broncos. It’s important to remember how bad things were during this time.

Because it was Joe’s hire and it was a disaster, I think their only trump card that they could play was to bring in Elway as an executive. I could be wrong but I kind of have the impression that Ellis has let Elway choose the head coach and let him take all the slings and arrows if it turned out bad.

Jokic vs AD/Howard is such an athletic mismatch.

I don't know how you build around his extreme lack of athleticism if you want to compete. Maybe if you had a couple high end slashers you could try to get teams to play small by going iso on the rotation...idk.

re: Kyle Shanahan

Kyle already had a super close relationship with the 49ers owner before the interview process even began. When Mike Shanahan was the OC for the 49ers, Kyle was a high school student working at a pizzeria joint in San Fran. The pizzeria was owned by the 49ers eventual owner (he wasn’t the owner of the team at that time - just owned the pizza joint).

I don’t think it’s so much that the Broncos didn’t give Kyle a chance as it was that there was a pre-existing close relationship with the 49ers owner.

Also when Kyle was brought on board he was able to pick his own GM which ended up being Lynch. I don’t believe there’s any way John Elway would have allowed that.

This would have been to replace Kubiak, who also runs the WCO. The Broncos were one year after the SB; so the machinery would have been in place for the most part for Kyles offense. At the time, the Niners were floundering and had recently been coached by a Ron Jeremy lookalike.

I think it’s erroneous to assume Kyle couldn’t have been sold on coming to Denver. But Elway had tunnel vision for Vance Joseph from having interviewed him years before. It’s also a fair point to make that Ellis might have strong objections to anything associated to Mike Shanahan. Maybe he otherwise let’s John choose except for when it comes to Shanahan?

Kyle would have been a far better choice than Joseph. And it would have been a logical choice given that Mike is by far the best coach in the history of the franchise. But there seems to be an invisible hand behind the scenes that prevented it. It might be Elway/Ellis/both.

Did Elway and Shanahan have a falling out that I’m not aware of? Isn’t Mike still in Denver these days? Does anyone else find it strange that you don’t hear about Elway or Shanahan ever associating with each other? Or is it simply that I’m not hearing about it? I wonder if there’s something preventing Elway from associating with Shanahan (Ellis maybe?). At some point Mike needs to be acknowledged with the other Broncos greats.

Mike sold his house when he left to coach Washington. That thing was amazing. One of the coolest houses I had the opportunity to work on. I'm not sure if he ever moved back though.

I really wanted Kyle when the Broncos had the chance to hire him. We could have had Kyle as the HC and Wade as the DC. We would've been in amazing shape even with our lack luster QBs. I'm not sure what Elway saw in his "Leader of men" and why he got cheap with Wade, but those were gruesome mistakes he made. I still love Elway. I always will (He's one of my childhood heroes), but I'm starting to feel like a battered spouse who doesn't know when to leave their abusive relationship. His Bad coaching decisions and completely perplexing draft choices have to change. We need O linemen Damnit!

I also don't know how much influence Joe Ellis has over the team and ownership dispute. I've had a long standing feeling he is actually the man behind many of the Broncos front office mistakes over the past 4 years.

Thanks for that!

I think Joe Ellis has been the snake in the weeds for a lot longer than 4 years. I feel like McDaniels was his mess that Elway was brought in to clean up and win back good Will with the fan base.

Regarding Elway, he did an amazing job in the beginning. He brought in Peyton then a after the SB loss, he flipped the identity of the team in only 2 years, which is pretty remarkable.

I’ve gotta say this too. Kubiak’s coaching performance in 2015 was all time great. Yet he never gets credit. It was a difficult situation with PMs decline and also not being suited to Kubiaks offense. But he had to replace PM with Brock if Brock was taking better care of the football. Otherwise he was going to waste that amazing defense. It was not an easy situation for a coach. And I also respect that Kubiak recognized the defense was what was going to take us far and was willing to have the offense not take risks even though as an offensive coach, he maybe wanted to take more risks?

Mike definitely moved back. I work at Cherry Hills CC and he was a somewhat regular there.

This is ALL on Elway - you want to force it and keep a human turnstyle like garrett bolles on the team, well then this is what you get. Oh he'll make sure he won't take any more penalties - he'll just let everyone past him. Garbage.

We need O line men! How can something so obvious be ignored soooo much? Wilkerson didn't even break Watt's stride on the play Lock got hurt. Make a f***ing trade already.

Also special teams tackling is brutal. We really needed a pre season.

This team is going nowhere. It was 2nd down, 2 and 23 and we went for 2 run plays as if we were already settling for the FG. That's a loser mentality.

For a long time, I thought that Elway knew what he was doing because after all - he did build that 2015 championship team but the evidence is overwhelming with all of the decisions since then that he just doesn't. When he hired Vance Joseph (mistake) he also brought in Mike McCoy a former head coach to coach the offense. McCoy and Joseph were never on the same page, it didn't work and it was a mess. It always seemed to me like McCoy was like "I'm not going to help this idiot, he's going to get fired and then I'll be the head coach".

Now he goes and does the same thing with Pat Shurmur.

Just tank and get Lawrence.
