Sox will probably agree to an out in deal for Harper like we had with Belle so the years and cost may not be that important if he can hit UFA again in say 4 years

You're saying Harper wants an option. Options cost money. The ChiSox bear all the risk. If Harper sucks, Sox lose. If Harper's great, it's a push as he opts out. Just look at Jason Heyward.

however i agree with BWC, it appears that the norm now is for agents to push for an out clause. so their client can hit the FA again..... but i would, if i was looking after the owners well fare push for a mutual option for both parties and esp no front loaded contract.

He'll definitely raise fan interest and put butts in the seats.

Absolutely, but we're probably going to be talking the biggest contract in baseball currently and I didn't think that the Sox had that kind of capital to outbid everybody.

I've seen some suggestions about a shorter deal, four years with a player option out after three, to maximize his annual pay and give him an out risk free in short order, but that seems more like a move for if he wanted a championship before signing a final money contract, which I don't think makes sense for him and the Sox, not to mention the prospect of a longterm, nine-figure mega deal for gauaranteed generational wealth is hard to turn down now.

Harper turned down a $300 million deal. He's not signing a 3-5 year deal for half that amount.

Well one, there aren't many bidders. Two, of course they do. They could give him $50mm a year for the next couple years and still be well under $100mm.

People act like they're poor because attendance is bad and they want to compare them to the Cubs. Yet Forbes had them as the 14th most valuable last year and they'll probably move up when they start winning and with the new TV deal. They aren't poor by any means.

I would imagine it would still be a 8-10 year deal around that amount, but it would have opt outs after say 3 or 5 years to allow him to walk if he thinks he can get more.

Im curious to see what his contract comes in at. It doesn't seem to be the bidding frenzy everyone thought, but maybe it still ends up being 300+ mil.

Never forget...

Parker was a one year flyer that most everyone knew would be a failure. He actually helps the Bulls in regards to tanking. $20mn spent on a liability. It will give the Bulls a shot at Zion or RJ.

The bigger issue is credibility. Reinsdorf needs to fire both Paxson and Boylen by the end of the season.

Unfortunately, the Bulls are starting to improve with Markkanen, Lavine, Dunn, Lopez, and Portis back in the lineup. With Carter improving during the season, this team is going to start winning enough games to screw themselves out of a top 5 pick. They would have beat Orlando last night if Markkanen, Portis, and Dunn were in better game shape coming back from injury.

The Bulls need to trade Holiday and Lopez ASAP. They need to tank.

Having money and being able to fund through operations are two different things. Harper would have to fill an extra 10-15k seats per night to pay for a contract that big. I just don’t see it on the south side.

Except it's not a gate driven sport and hasn't been in over a decade.

It doesn't need to go up. They had a $129MM payroll in 2011. They can certainly afford the same today, with $50MM more coming in annually.

According to Forbes they run a profit of $30m. Chicago White Sox on the Forbes MLB Team Valuations List

$30 mil profit at $119 mil payroll. Right now they are way way under that, right?

The Sox can afford the massive contract to get Harper right now. I think weather or not it's wise is a completely fair question. My heart wants them to get him, but my head wonders if it's better they don't. He had one great year where he was worth the kind of money we are talking about. Past 3 years, he's been very good, but not great. It's a risk and the Sox aren't going to have a $200 mil payroll any time soon to make up for a mistake, if it is one.

Tbh, I don't know how much under the $119 payroll they are right now, or how how many positions they have to fill.

Cotts projects them at 62-63 mil right now. Obviously that's with estimated for arb players and I'm sure they'll sign some other guys too.

Also, there's no sizable contracts on the books going forward. They are damn near a blank slate with only Tim Anderson actually signed past next year, exuding arb eligible guys.

Projecting Payrolls: Chicago White Sox

Before jettisoning Davidson and Garcia we were projected to have 58.9M payroll. Since they moved on from Garcia and Davidson they have added Nova and his salary so its slightly higher

So Sox have plenty of financial room to be player if they want in FA for this coming year or next and sign some big $ deals
