I may be in the deep minority here but my girlfriend and I were downright disappointed by Guardians of the Galaxy last night.

Going into it, I didn't have any expectations that the movie was going to be a masterpiece, but I did expect it to entertain me a lot.

Rottentomatoes gives it 92%. Read the brief review synopsis' and they all give massive and unheralded praise to the movie.

IMDB is now 8.8 out of 60k.

I had several friends who go saw it, and their range of emotions varied from the worst review, which was "the movie is madddddd good" to the best one "the best movie of the summer - hysterical and amazing" (obviously paraphrasing). Clearly you can see that the range wasn't too big, at all.

I tempered my expectations of how good I thought the movie was going to be, i've made the mistake of taking RT ratings like law and have been disappointed by such high ratings at least once in the past. But as I said, I was at the very least expecting to be entertained.

One thing that I did expect was that the premise of the movie was going to be rather silly. I embraced that I had to suspend any believability and that there would be quirky "space" characters and costumes and story lines... and as a result, warranted or not, I expected that why this film was so highly regarded as entertaining would be from comedic relief. With Chris Pratt playing the lead, and having just come off of the Lego Movie success, John C Reilly, Bradley Cooper as a Racoon, and Vin Diesel as a tree... I thought that their ability to construct a highly comedic screen play would be quite easy to implement.

Then I watched it last night. I was right about the silly premise. As a viewer who never read the comics I had to quickly catch on to the space lingo and species' that were thrown at me. But the comedy to justify the silliness never came.

The FUNNIEST character, was by far Dave Bautista's... He had 3-4 jokes that made the demographic that was over 9 years old (not many of us) laugh out loud. Then that was it. Chris Pratt didn't have many funny lines. Forget Zoe Saldana offering any of that, ever. Bradley Cooper as the Racoon turned to be more winy and vindictive because of an inferiority complex rather than a source of laughter. Vin Diesel's character was likeable, to an extent, but not because of some sort of unique presence on screen - the character was liked because of his altruism and kind-heartedness. Every other character ranged from having a bizarre script or a completely anti-climactic one: Benicio Del Torro as the collector who's a ****ing sketch ball. Glen Close who offers absolutely nothing to the movie. Josh Brolin who has like 2 minutes of screen time yelling at the main villain as a big blue/purple man sitting on a throne. John C Reilly who you would expect would have been given some comedic bones... was given absolutely nothing to work with. Even the main guy from Serenity made a cameo and was barely noticed.

I can not believe this movie was this highly regarded and well received. The majority of the people laughing were the under 9 year olds who laughed at CGI reptiles being kicked or curse words. The "funniest" scene for the crowd in general was when Groot, the walking tree, shot a branch through the bodies of 10 soldiers and pounded them from side to side in a cave excessively. The camera zoomed into his face after it ended and he smiled. *cue emphatic howling and laughing from crowd*... The **** type of "comedy" is this.

Stupid premise. The characters weren't anything new. They were predictable and cliche. The screen play was absolute ****.

The 2 redeemable factors were the soundtrack and Dave Bautista. That's it.

Guardians was awesome, Rust. You cray.

I've only been reading more reviews since I saw it. Literally not one bad one.

I'm only getting angrier as I appear to be in the 1% demographic who did not actually like the movie.

Really, there was absolutely nothing I found special about it. For all of my friends saying that it was "hysterical" none could answer the simple question "tell me something funny from the movie that didn't involve Dave Bautista".

All reverted to, "ok maybe it wasn't the funniest, but..."

And the story was downright putrid for there to be not enough comedy.

I'm usually not critical at all about movies. But I am so disappointed w/ this one. :( Wish I liked it, and could swim w/ the tide.

Re: Jeff Buckley...

1.) If, when you were alive, you were best known for covers, you weren't amazing.
2.) Because you say no to record labels doesn't mean you were amazing.
3.) When your biggest chart success comes a decade after you died, and it was STILL for a cover, then you weren't amazing.
4.) One great performance does not a great artist make.
5.) Dying does not make you better

And I like Grace and I like his version of Hallelujah. But Jeff Buckley just wasn't as amazing as he's made out to be. Certainly not a highlight of the decade.

Hallelujah is not even close to my favorite Jeff Buckley song. I actually think it's a weak cover overall, that song is meant to be sung straight with a piano.

I think Grace is amazing. His most famous song being a cover means absolutely nothing to me.

I'd agree with you, but Grace is a fantastic album and chart success has nothing to do with how good an artist is. The only reason he's not a highlight of the decade is because he died early. The first half of the posthumous release is pretty good, and I can only imagine what would've came if he could clean them up.

Also, if anything, props to Buckley for reintroducing people to Leonard Cohen. Famous Blue Raincoat gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it.

Anybody else dieting using MyFitnessPal? I've cut my calories low, low the past five days. I've gone through low calorie intake through hard times before (ie gf breakup) but has anybody else had similar experiences?

Yes. YES. PREACH.

I use it all the time. It really only works if you are willing to take the time to put in the foods you can't find. I have set myself on a 1500 calorie per day diet. It really helps me keep track.

Have you actually played craps in a Casino before? Either way, let me know before you go to AC (not sure if you have been to a casino before). I go to Biloxi, MS 3-4 times a year. I can give you some solid tips.

I was at Tropicana last Saturday but I only played the slots and my dad played craps. What tips do you have?

If you are really looking to have fun and enjoy side bets, make sure to play the Small, Tall & All or nothing at all. The house edge is pretty sizable however, they pay off big when they hit. IIRC the Small/Tall are 35:1 and the All or nothing is 175:1. I was fortunate enough to have $3 on each when I was in Biloxi at the end of May. Even $1 on each will yield a $240 pay out.

If you don't like side bets, want to stick with a more conventional wisdom, and are focused on the math of winning... House edge on 4 & 10 is like 7%.

If you are like me and only go once in a while, then I wouldn't worry about the house edge on the Small/Tall/All bets because even though the house edge is roughly 7.97%, it is great when you hit them.

Remember, you have to do it at the beginning of the roll. Once one of those points have been rolled you cannot do the bet. Every time a 7 is rolled it starts over.

Be very careful of slots and understand exactly what it is you are playing. Penny slots are very popular. Some of those penny machines can run upwards of $9 a pull if you don't know what you are playing. Be cognizant of how much the minimum play is on that slot and how many lines you are playing. Your best strategy is usually to do the minimum bet along with max lines.

Your best odds in the casino is actually in baccarat. It is damn near 50% ( I think the house edge is somewhere around .5%). It is an expensive game though usually starting with a $15-$25 bet per hand that can go upwards of $100 a bet at night time on the weekends. I watched a friend of mine walk away with damn near $4k after starting with $100. He kept betting the player and I believe the banker only won 3 times during the shoe.

Stay far away from 3 card poker, pai gow fortune, etc. They are expensive, suck you in and they are not games for the average casino goer. They seem innocent but some require more money to stay in as the hand goes on.

If you play roulette, be aware of line bets, corner bets, etc. The person at the table will explain those to you. Make sure you ask about them as they increase your overall odds and take away the house % if you know how to play them. I don't recall the pay out on each one of those.

Overall, if you are unsure, you lose nothing by asking the person at the table. They want you to win. When people get drunk and win, they tip the dealers. Ask them. Especially if you decide to play blackjack. Never split 4's, 5's or faces. Never hit anything over an 11 if the dealer is showing 13-16. If you don't feel comfortable doing a full double down, you can double for less (half your bet). Double on 10/11 vs 13-16. Most casinos will let you take a basic strategy card and have it at the table with you. Never, ever, ever take insurance. Also try not to get carried away with double downs/splits if the dealer is showing a 2. Most people think it is a bad card for the dealer because it is a "bust card" but in reality every dealer and knowledgable player will tell you that a face up 2 might as well be a dealers joker.

Which numbers would you recommend not placing odds bets on? 6 and 8 are the obvious choices to place odds on, but is 4 and 10 worth it as they are the least frequently rolled numbers?
