My face when people drink Pumpkin Ale.
I hate Pumpkin in beer. Russian Imperials are the GOAT of all GOATs.
Pumpkin beer is only good for a seasonal treat once in a while, and 90% of them just aren't good. Southern Tier's Pumking, however, is an imperial pumpkin ale that comes in at 9.7% AVB and if you can find it on tap in October it's a delicious treat.
I have loved plenty of Russian imperials, but saying the entire category is the best is a bit too broad. I've had just as many that simply weren't good; being a RIS doesn't automatically make it a good brew. I am definitely partial to a good stout though. My real favorites are the bourbon aged brews, strong ales, occasional bitters, etc. And if I'm just in the mood for easy sipping, you can't go wrong with a good brown ale.
I'm lucky enough to have a phenomenal, cozy little spot 5 minutes from my house where the food is great, the staff is super friendly and they keep 20 taps of constantly rotating small batch brews. The menu changes nearly daily; they get a keg or half keg of each beer and when it kicks something different takes its place. They also have a good 80ish or so bottles on the menu and not a single Budweiser, Coors, Corona, Miller, Sam Adams, Blue Moon, etc among them. The bar probably seats 16 at most and the tables in the back can seat maybe 50 in total. The food is all organic, local, grass fed, etc as well.
The place is really just incredible and my wife and I have become such regulars there over the past three years that I very rarely drink bottled beer anymore. The variety and the quality of fresh, tap beer just around the corner makes it tough to want to drink beer anywhere else, so if I drink at home I usually stick to scotch. Although I currently have a batch of beer fermenting in my basement that I brewed with one of the bartenders from the place. I love good beer.
Some of my favorites from last year were:
Heavy Seas Big DIPA; imperial double IPA 10.6%
Smuttynose Really Old Brown Dog; old ale 10.0%
Breckenridge Vanilla Porter 4.7%
Ballast Point Indra Kunindra; export stout 7.0%
Lexington Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale; American strong ale 8.2%
Founders Backwoods Bast*rd; scotch ale 10.2%
Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shutdown Ale; American strong ale 9.6%
The Bruery Smoking Wood; rye whiskey barrel aged smoked beer 13.0%
