So today is garbage day where we are. Correction, NOT garbage, but just Green bin and blue bag collection today. So heres the problem, and we figured we would have trouble with this but no way to rectify at this point. Our Green bin is half full of frozen solid vegetable mattter. Which of course is going to freeze solid in this climate. What happened is despite loosening matter every pickup we found that by morning pickup the matter was frozen solid to the bin again. So when they pick it up and try to shake it with the mechanical collector nothing comes out. We probably have 50lbs in there by now of COMPRESSED organic matter.

The helpful hints at Waste management are for the weather to "warm up" or to put bin in sunlight (um, how does this work when its dark all night before the early morning collection. ) This would maybe work a bit if they collected later in day. Another problem is that due to green bin collection only every 2nd week its guaranteed to have the organic matter sticking to the bins. This doesn't work in this climate, at all, but of course the City of Edmonton, the 2nd coldest City in NA, is having us do this..

Use the little biodegradable bin liners. Have a little bin in the kitchen with the liner, take out when its full. Prevents it from sticking to the bin in the winter and prevents rotting veg stuck to your bin in the summer.

I've never even seen these on the shelves at stores we go to. Not that I want to buy them. The whole point of green is REDUCING consumption and buying stupid shit like plastic bags I shouldn't need. i mean I like to LIMIT footprint and limit what I buy. We empty the little kitchen bins quite often so that this would be a lot of bags. We can't even put them outside to freeze as city suggested as we have feral cats in neighborhood that get into everything, and even have figured out how to get in the bins.

Sorry to rant but this green bin idea was a real stupid idea for this climate. Half of the neighbors the bins are knocked over every week from animals getting into these. The City does nothing about animal control, we have about 25 feral cats just roaming neighborhood at any given time.

You could try these?
Real Canadian Superstore Supermarket | Grocery shop online or instore
Less bag usage, bio degradable so they are green at least.
The green bin seems like a bad idea and in the way we are doing things it is, but it definitely is meant to limit our trash problem pulling the compostable stuff out.

Thanks. Oh well. We already buy black bags that are expensive, blue bags that are expensive, and now these bags take the cake. 6 bucks for 10bags. lol thats 60cents a bag before GST.

They roll out all this garbage collection streaming, City charges us MORE to get garbage collected every 2nd week, AND we have to eat costs of buying several different kinds of bags. I find the blue bags pretty costly as well. We prefer the blue bins they used to have, but they refuse to collect those now, so we have to buy, and use the bags, lol More disposable plastic bags for the environment, ironic.

We were doing streaming of garbage for years then we heard that their plant, the building was unsafe, so they had to shut it down and after everybody has been streaming garbage they went back to not leaving it sorted, just landfilling it, because they didn't have the processing facility for organic or other matter ffs. Everything this city does is bassackwards. Why even bother sorting at this point?

Again not directing rant at you, I already complained to the city, but its just frustrating with present economy, inflation how much more every little cost of living thing inches up.

Oh 100%. The one thing I have noticed is I use less black bags total now and the are replaced by using the small bin liners for the compostable stuff, so at least for me its balanced. My friend got pissed cause he has been composting his own shit for years.

I get their reasoning for the every 2nd week, hoping people actualy throw the smelly shit aka organics in the green bin but like, not everyone has room to store the garbage.

A nice trick though with the green bin in the summer is that they let you fill it to the top with yard waste and take that, only really upside I have found.

All that said, I lived in a pilot area and before that was in apartments so I never got used to the old way and have had a ton of time with the new one.

Yeah we've used it for garden and yard waste as well as the City now limits yard waste collection to only a few times a year. (the instructions said it was acceptable to fill them up with yard waste. heh, every week I have mind full, we're active in gardening, trimming trees etc.

This is our first year here with these plastic bins and so we're just getting used to it all. From what I read the first winter with these a lot of people have trouble with the bins sticking frozen solid. Of course the City say they never got the feedback before. But the same person at 311 said she has the same problem and several at the city also do..lol

Gonna share this comment on reddit, on the topic of frozen solid green bins.

"Just switch bins with a neighbor you don't like" lol Not gonna do that..

My partners’ dad would pour a full kettle of freshly boiled water into the bin not long before the garbage dudes come. It worked pretty well. We got him some compostable bags so he stopped, but they are expensive per use..

edit: he also drilled holes to allow himself to lock the garbage because someone overloaded his can and it wasn’t picked up once. I guess he trusts himself even at 74 years old to wake up early and unlock his bins before the trucks come!

I've got about 200 liters of frozen compressed mass in there. Its almost full of frozen green stuff. Its going to take more than a kettle, heh. PLus the garbage guys come before the crack of dawn here. They're late for everything else but strangely pick up the green bins very early. So that the City of Edmonton suggestion to just leave the bins out in the sunlight is null and void.

I don't have enough motivation to go out looking after the bin at 7am and whatever I put in the night before just adds to the frozen mess. Least the black flies in there are dead..
