giving this guy 17.5 million just so they can sell mugs and tshirts of him is probably one of the dumbest sports decisions in modern STL sports history

Wainwright is just one guy in a long list throughout history who hung on one year too long. There were warning signs at the end of last year that his time as an MLB starter was likely over. The FO badly botched assembling a pitching staff (rotation and bullpen) and it is chief among the reasons this season has gone in the toilet.

We should be thanking Waino. He’s helping us with a top 5 pick. Hopefully we select an ace there.

so we can trade it away for 1 year of service for a mediocre OF

You can’t trade picks. But I guess they can trade the player after he’s drafted. But I doubt that happens. The Cards are actually pretty good at drafting. It’s their FA signings that are so bad.

Mikolas is quickly becoming a #4. We need a #1-3. Matz, Thompson, Hudson and Libratore will be competing for #5.

Hot take….

Goldy and Arenado will ask for a trade this off season. This team is not close to being a contender and they are realizing it.

The Cards are currently drafting 5th with a pretty tough remaining schedule. I doubt they’ll be able to out-suck the bottom 4, But I’d be happy with 5th. There is a lottery, so you never know…

Do MLB drafts usually have a consensus top 5 or 10 players like the NHL usually does (with 1-2 surprise picks)? I always get the impression that it’s a crapshoot in the MLB draft outside the top 1-2 picks, but I don’t follow it at all.

I think they’re pretty similar. Both have high bust rates, but being in the top 5 helps. The Cards and Blues do a really good job on scouting and drafting imo. Neither sign the big ticket FA, so they put a lot of emphasis on drafting and trading.

Who would have thought the Cards and Blues would both be drafting in the top 10? Not me, but I’m a homer. And it wouldn’t surprise me if both were drafting in the top 10 again next year after watching them play.

It's even more hit or miss compared to the NHL. If you look at the top 5 picks from the 2010-2020 drafts there are a lot of busts and few truly elite players.

Matz is their best pitcher and he was benched because he couldnt get anyone out at one point. This isnt a fluke 'down' season. Injuries didnt cause this. This is a horribly mismanaged roster coupled with horrible coaching staff hires/promotions.

With all of that -- Mozeliak still has more job security than the average American could ever hope for.

I see no way how this is just a retool at this point as they are claiming. They're tanking and the loser mentality is creeping in. The entire pitching staff is awful.

You cant retool an entire pitching staff over one offseason -- especially not Mozeliak. He has lost all credibility after trading away the impact players he has in recent years.

we need a rebuild. I’d start this off season by moving Arenado and Goldy.

Yep. Maybe hold onto them until the '24 TDL to see if a miracle happens but they're not going to be a part of the future if they have to rebuild and that looks very likely.

Anybody have info on Arenado’s injury? Any reason not to play him in fantasy? Any info is appreciated.
