Nope but it didn't sound loud through the surround sound. Kinda flat. Not what I expected to I was a wee bit shocked by the reaction

They turn down audience mics so people at home can hear announcers etc better then turn up commercials as well. True story. The crowd is never as quiet at games as fans watching at home seem to think. From all accounts, the crowd was quite loud yesterday but the free beer may have had something to do with that.

What did you guys think?

I liked it - thought it was equal parts classy and basic.

A bit embarrassed by the reaction (or lack thereof) that Commander Hadfield got, and just in general how quiet the place was.

Also - was it just me, or did Andy Frost sound incredibly subdued and flat ? Has the magic just gone from his voice or something??
yes I think it's obvious Andy wants to go to Pittsburgh with Nik K

It was certainly one of the better ones I've been at.

I think with Hadfield most were just listening to what he had to say, others figuring out who he is. What type of reaction should he have received?

The crowd was very good last night, free beer may have had something to do with that.
was all the free stuff unlimited?

The Leafs media department is seriously hurting. From the terrible LeafsTV and the bush league chucklehead "Kenneth" personalities on it to lame Andy Frost, the Leafs look cheap and minor league.

You seriously should just move to L.A. hollywood and may even get a sneak peak at the cheerleaders instead of watching Sittler dip into fries.

Where's you sense of humour, for once I'd like to see one happy comment from you.

There certainly was a buzz in the building with hockey being back.

I was embarrassed about how quiet the place was when Hadfield got the crowd involved and Bower looked embarrassed to be there, representing the Leafs
Bower is like 200 years old; that's his look.

if he wasn't proud to be a Leaf he would say no when they ask.

most people just don't get this.

I wasn't there either but the beer was a little warm. I could tell when they showed it on TV

Space is one of the last thing on most Canadians' minds. Ooooooo the puck is floating!!! This guy must be an astronaut. Golf clap. Next.

Also, there was an obvious delay in communication between the ISS and the ACC. It's difficult to tell if his responses were recorded, but the delay was still there, which killed momentum.

At 88 years old, Johnny Bower constantly does good things for the Leafs community. I wish I am moving around as well as he is at that age.

I know that the video was a bit on the cheesey side, but really its trying to play to all age groups, not just the passionate hockey fan. It involved a very cool aspect of going into space which might seem fascinating to a younger child attending his first game and it also involved some of the greats to play for this team who most people respect.

If you are expecting a Quentin Tarantino flick before a hockey game, then you are at the wrong sport.

I would say it was definately recorded.

I only caught bits and pieces of the opening ceremony, but I thought the video showing the players over the years making their way to the ice was a good lead in for the team to take the ice. I felt the sense of history flashing before our eyes and it never gets old seeing guys like Clark, Dougie and Sundin. It was one of the better spots I've seen the Leafs put together over the years I thought.

And the caption at the end of 877 players having taken those steps over the course of franchise history. I for some reason thought it'd be way higher than that.

So you're telling me that a video editor couldn't crop the video to remove the dead 'space' and a Sportsnet director couldn't switch to the video faster when the announcer was talking to Hadfield?

...You're probably right.

I agree, thought it was well thought out, original and well done.

At the very least it was fresh. How many times will the Habs trot out those torches?

I'm not telling you that, no idea how that stuff works.

Common sense tells me that they aren't going to risk the connection to space going down or not being clear enough to understand at the moment they needed it to be.

This is exactly what happened. If you weren't at the arena, this pregame ceremony was horrible. It was worse than an OHL game.

I know. I was conceding to the fact that it was recorded and I was just trying to explain the laggy communication, which was awkward and left in the video for some reason (ie. probably poor editing/directing by Sportsnet, which wouldn't be new).

the whole idea is over done. they don't need 30 minute opening ceremonies. the NYI game on Saturday night was 8 mintues old before the Montreal/Toronto game started. 8 minutes of stop time hockey.

they are too long in Montreal and Toronto (I assume Vancouver and other cities too?). It's not good for the players and do the fans REALLY care? maybe the 20K in the rink but not many at home.

I haven't seen it on tv but it was great live.

I thought it was lame as hell. The lightshow was just generic and nothing special for a home opener (some highlights, wowee!) then the whole puck drop thing was just....meh

the concept was cool but the execution wasn't all that great

then you've got potvin...I'm a fan but come on, it's not like he won anything with us

then tucker, who is still on our buyout cap hit. why commemorate a bum?

then you've got Sittler running around like an idiot eating fries...

all in all my feeling from this was we are not the Yankees. We don't have the class and history and execution of a top franchise like that, but we want to be - and miss the mark sorely.

I'm not so critical. I thought it was amazing how fast they got the puck to center ice from that far away. It was out of this world, really liked it. I'd like to see the Habs try the same thing with one of their astronaut fans only from the Sun.

That could be true. In the arena it was great and one of only 3 times (Opening ceremony, Orr fight, Kadri goal) people in the crowd made noise. The only thing embarrassing last night was the fans and their pathetic cheering. I left with no voice, after the final horn, many others left with 5 minutes left and hadn't made a sound all game. I was standing, yelling and cheering. People just looked at me like I was crazy. It felt like a 20,000 person library. Only sounds I heard were a couple guys the next section over trying to do the game thing!.
