Options for Center

Currently we do not have a true #1 center.
So load up on a bunch of 2's, 3's

That's what we have been doing for a decade now. And before I get screamed at about Stepan, he's a high end 2 not a #1. Also you can argue he's not made for our new uptempo speed/ transition game.

The Rangers don't match up with the Avs. And, I find it highly unlikely GMJG is going to part with a #1 pick, especially from next year's draft.

Yeah he probably won't and I wouldn't either. But I think a 2019 first or even a 2018 2/3 is possible?

He's a lower end one, not a high end 2. His stats are routinely in the high teens to low 20's compared to other 1st line centers.

I'm also accounting for his 2 way play and defense. I think if we ever had a true 1C he would have flourished even more having him on a second line.

NSH & CLB can offer way more for Duchene than the RAngers.

TOR too, but it's not their time.

You're probably looking at

Murray, Jenner, 1st, Prospect.

The more I think about it, the more I'm comfortable with Miller in the middle, especially if the Rangers can backfill on the 4th line.

Buch-Zib-Zucc
Kreider-Miller-Nash
Vesey-Hayes-Grabner
Speed-Lias-Fast
McClement

McD-Shatts
Skjei-Smith
Staal/Holden-Bear/ADA

I'm also a huge fan of Johnny Brodinski in LA. Would be awesome if they can flip Holden/Pick for him.

Stepan is a lower-tied 1C for sure. People have unrealistic expectations of a 1C. This isn't 1996 where a center gets 100 points. Times have changed. The few centers who get a point per game, are the elite centers who were picked high in the draft. Stepan isn't an elite offensive center, but definitely a 1C.

What's a comparable package to Murray, Jenner, 1st, Prospect?

He would flourish on the 2nd line, because he is a 1C. Put Scheifele in the 2nd line and he will flourish as well.

Just because we haven't had an elite center in 20 years, doesn't mean Stepan was a 2C. He's not going to set the world on fire, but to call him a 2C is just wrong.

Stepan is an underrated 2 way player. Accounting for that actually ADDS to his value as a 1C. It doesn't detract from it.

That being said, there are 25 centers I'd probably take ahead of Stepan, if not more. Some teams (Pitt) actually have 2 #1 C's.

Smith Kreider 1st.

Rangers don't have the assets to backfill.

CLB does. And will upgrade their team in the process. They Turn Jenner (30G scorer) into a No 1 center.

Upgrade on Murray with Gavrikov/Carlsson.

1st is a premium paid.

Prospect is used to outbid the competition.

Oh and they're all cheaper than the Rangers options.

COL is cutting their expenses.

They will go from Stastny, O'Reilly, Duchene, MacKinnon down the middle to crap in 3 off-seasons.

Problem is teams like Pit, Edm, and Chi have 2 1's

Kreider and Zib will be joined at the hip all year. I'd like to see Zucc be on Miller's RW. And Hayes and Vesey both need Nash.

Not as a #1 Center, but I would really love it if we take a flier on Mikhail Grigorenko. Immensely talented young player, who wouldn't cost much and who played with terrible talent with the Avalanche.

At best, he comes a 1C. At worse, whatever. It's for a short term and for little money.
