Joffrey Lupul - Nazem Kadri - Phil Kessel
Nikolai Kulemin - Mikhail Grabovski - Clarke MacArthur
James Van Reimsdyk - Tim Connolly - Matt Frattin
David Steckel - Jay McClement - Leo Komarov
That leaves Tyler Bozak and Mathew Lombardi as odd men out.
I predict Tyler Bozak to be dealt along with Joe Colborne to Vancouver for Roberto Luongo.
Lombardi could be a buyout candidate. Brown as the extra forward.
Phaneuf - Gunnarson
Komisarek - Gardiner
Liles - Holzer
Kostka
as the D pairings to start the year. Fraser will come in place for Gardiner if he isn't ready for the start of the season.
Luongo
Reimer
as the Goalies.
I think the above team is definitely a playoff caliber team if all goes well. It'll definitely be one of the better skating teams up front and the D has enough mobility with Gunnar, Phaneuf, Gardiner and Liles. The key will be a defensive system instilled by the coaches. Top that off with Luongo's goaltending and this team should be fine.
Will no longer be on the team
Lombardi (Carlyle likes big and gritty)
Connelly (ditto)
Komi (Big and gritty, no puck or passing skills, no longer NHL'r, after Gardiner returns will not dressed)
Not quite ready for prime time
Broil (not a great fighter, cant score, lousy puck skills, decent skater for big man, needs 3 years in the Ahl)
Rielly (didnt come close to dominating at WJC like Trouba or Jones did, likely 2 years away, anothe WJC and 1 year AHL)
D'Amigo (a bottom six grinder, another year)
Colborne (Needs another year, may not be top six, love the size and vision, needs to to go to the net more and not play on the periphery)
Ashton (needs another year in AHL, love his speed, grit, coming on nicely)
Definitely in
Frattin (speed, really solid for his height with grit, great shot)
Kadri (magic hands, maturing, plays with grit)
Komorav (skate, shoot, score, gritty egde
Bubble
Holzer (earned the start, has to play with grit which he has lately, limited puck skills)
Fraser (love his grit and legit tough guy, similar to Holzer, only need 1 of these)
Ranger (no brainer, size, toughness, puck skills, howitzer. Not sure why he isnt signed- may need to release a player - Orr- in order to hit 50 contract limit)
Kostka- love this kid, dominating ahl, puck patience thru the roof, only a bit more edge. Without Gardiner, they likely need a guy like this to run the pp to complement Liles
Steckel- may only have room for one of he or McClement
Brown- likely makes team with his edge, willing fighter, speed and grit
Carlyle's team
- Will go for big gritty players a la Perry and Getlaf and the rest of the Ducks. They dominated the boards, finished checks, ran Detroit out of the rink in Western conf final with dominating boards. If you are not this kind of player, your gone. Lombardi and Conolly are way to soft, Bozak may be as well. Kessel will be interestig as he is soft, will Carlyle put up with that. By next year with all the UFA's, this team will be much bigger and grittier than the one we see opening night
