Brunette is another guy really hanging on for dear life lol.

But it’s been heavily speculated that Trotz isn’t going to be so quick to throw Brunette overboard because Nashville has always been an organization that hasn’t had a whole lot of head coaches and Trotz himself lasted 15 years there.

But times were much different back then. Trotz only survived seasons like this in the early expansion days of Nashville.

I’m of two minds watching the Rangers implode.

On the one hand, the rivalry is more fun when they’re good and we kick their asses anyway. And my father in law is a Rangers fan, so I can’t openly gloat too much, it would be unseemly.

On the other hand, it’s the Rangers. F*** them, just on principle. I want them to crash and burn hard, in as embarrassing a fashion as possible. I want Drury to bungle this so bad that his name becomes synonymous with outrageous failure, this generation’s Mike Milbury.
I was the former going into this season, but now that they’re spiraling out of control, I’m in the latter camp. I want to see how bad it gets for them.

as always, the Sabres are lining themselves up perfect for what they do (and what I predict) every goddamn season.

"Hot" start (11-9-1): "Wow they're trending up and even looking a little feisty this year, is this the year they get over the hump?"
Monumental collapse (10 game losing streak): "This is it, the most inept franchise in the league, they will never win again"
Strong finish to valiantly miss the playoffs by single digit points (TBD): "Wow, if they just avoided absolutely sucking ass for an entire month, they would have made the playoffs! You have reeled me back in!"

It is more fun when they’re good and lose in the playoffs instead. If they’re going to suck though then a death spiral like this where they started off as one of the top teams in the league, are coming off a Presidents Trophy, and an ECF is still really fun. It’s not fun when they’re perennially in the basement.

Nah, f*** NYR. They laughed at us all these years and especially last year after missing the playoffs after 22-23. They could legit miss for a decade+ and I could laugh at their misery. I think the Flyers possibly being back soon with a few moves is going to be our bigger rivalry the next decade anyway. Let the younger fans who didn't see the early 2000's realize how fun that era was.

The Sens do the exact same thing but just flip step 1/2. If the Sens can continue to the ASB break at a decent clip, they'll make it on the basis with how good their second halves usually are lmao

I would be perfectly fine with them never, ever making the playoffs again. Them missing from 1998-2004 was great fun.

I don’t think the Rangers are done done for this season by any stretch but certainly this group as presently constructed is a bunch of zombies and they need a drastic change, hopefully they make the wrong drastic change lol

They're not done because of who they have in net but they're beyond finished at the skater spots, it's not even a question. Kreider/Zibanejad look like they want the next flight out of JFK airport

This is a valid feeling, but it just feels empty to me to be on top and them not being competitive. Sure, you're setting yourselves up for being beaten by the Rags in the playoffs, but great fun takes risk.

Idk. It's a matter of personal preference.

2012/2023 are good enough for me in my lifetime, lol. Shame 2012 didn't end in a Cup because that's arguably the best route to a Cup as a Devils fan you can draw up by beating the Flyers/Rags in the East semis/finals.

I've experienced enough Devils-Rangers playoff series that have probably taken years off my life that I'm good for awhile on those anyway lol

It's tempting to agree with you, but take a look at their stretch of games from 12/20 onward:

Dallas, Carolina, us, Tampa Bay, Florida, Boston, Washington, Chicago, Dallas again, us again, Vegas, Colorado.

Owing to a soft schedule up until the beginning of this month or thereabouts, their only two wins against playoff teams so far are against Toronto and against Vancouver. And the latter is looking pretty tenuous as a playoff team.

So it might actually get worse and in a short amount of time.

Which is why their playoff odds are low right now despite being on the bubble. But if Igor starts playing Vezina quality and they survive the next month stretch they can make deadline moves and kind of like the 2012 Kings who retooled their team at the deadline and went in a run.

Well now he's back as GM and has f***ed up the chemistry of that team, hopefully not for another 15 years 🤣

Washington's going to cool down, but it won't be by that much. It's entirely possible they'll have enough points banked to be a top team in the Metro by the time their slowdown occurs, but it'll likely just be a dip in scoring based on shooting percentages evening out, not due to something more structural like their blue line falling apart or something. They're legitimately dangerous, and yeah, the on the fly retool they did is incredibly impressive.

I don't think the Rags are going to come back very much; they've been borderline frauds the last handful of years leaning so hard on Igor and their power play, but they don't have the depth to turn things around in a really serious way. Doesn't mean they won't slip into the playoffs, though, the East's lower half is a morass of mediocrity.
