Regulation W. Hell yeah KingsThe Kings might be my most hated team in the NHL this season. **** them
Sounds like some bullshit explanation for the NHL to rationalize pacifying Dolan and giving the Rangers favoritism. There's just no shot that the wording of an agreement from the 70s that grants MSG (not the Rangers, but MSG) a tax break is defined broadly enough to prohibit one-off Rangers home games outside of MSG.
Then take into account that someone in the administration for NYC would actually have to enforce it, revoke a 50 year tax incentive for a one off game played in the city, and then deal with the headache of potential litigation...
Yeah, that's just the NHL's excuse to make Dolan happy and ensure that the Rangers have extra home games.
Jarry at the end of the game looked like he was impersonating himself from that late season loss to Chicago in the last week of the season that effectively eliminated them.
Here's the tax reg:The infamous tax break is from 1982 and this home game bit has gotten discussed quite a bit.
Theoretically they were a home team at some point during the 2019-29 three game Qualifying Round vs CAR in the Toronto bubble. Maybe playoffs don’t count. Maybe this BS like you say.
There are people want to revoke their tax break.
Here's the tax reg:
"If one or both of said teams shall cease to play their home games in said property at any time, the tax exemption provided herein shall cease immediately and such property shall immediately be restored to the tax rolls," New York's Real Property Tax Law states.
I would argue strongly that playing a single home game within the city and immediately returning to a regular home schedule at MSG does not constitute ceasing to play their home games in said property.
Like you said, what about the home games in the playoff bubble? That's direct proof that this whole thing is bullshit. The NHL just doesn't want to deal with the stink that Dolan would put up.
Also, NYC has enough issues that they have insufficient funds to address. MSG getting a $40 million tax break every single year is beyond insane, but that's beside the point.

The tax reg has never been litigated. Based on the provision that's been provided in the media there's zero definition of what constitutes a "home game" or "ceasing" to play their home games. It's silent on factors like paid attendance and worldwide pandemics. The bubble games had no paid attendance so that's probably why it was ok too, that and the worldwide pandemic.
YeahThe bubble games had no paid attendance so that's probably why it was ok too, that and the worldwide pandemic.
But you have to keep in mind a lot of the city officials hate Dolan and many want MSG knocked down to rebuild Penn Station above ground. Rangers and the league don’t want it litigated either.Sounds like some bullshit explanation for the NHL to rationalize pacifying Dolan and giving the Rangers favoritism. So the whole thing is basically fugazi. I'm sure the NHL wants the revenue from as many MSG/Rangers home games as possible, so they're happy to go along with it.
The bubble games are a clear indication that the whole excuse is basically bullshit if anyone really pushed on it.
Ya I have no idea, I would just assume it would be some sort of exemption.Yeah
And they weren't going to lose out on a gate at MSG because even if the game was played there, the attendance at that time would have been 0. So it's understandable why an exception needed to be made for that.
But I think it's stupid that this couldn't count as a Rangers home game. Same with the Yankee Stadium games and the one at Citifield.
And the other teams, us, Buffalo, the Islanders twice, are the ones who lose a home game in their own buildings because of it.

I don't think that makes a difference. The tax break is legislation and not contractual, so NY politicians can repeal the tax break at any time and have already discussed it. So it's not like the Rangers are preserving some perpetual right by playing all of their home games at MSG.But you have to keep in mind a lot of the city officials hate Dolan and many want MSG knocked down to rebuild Penn Station above ground.
