The Rangers winning that game would seem to be best outcome for NJ since it’s not possible for both teams to lose
Agreed.

I don’t think the Rangers will choke away a playoff spot altogether, so I don’t at all mind them winning. Even better that they won in regulation.

It would have been annoying if they won in OT after giving that AARP joke squad a point with them.

f*** those fogeys. I actually wish the Rangers would have beaten them yesterday too. Time to bury them and their fluke season. The draft is calling.

The Caps didn’t look quite as slow as I expected but they only have limited skill. They had some dangerous chances on crossing and leading passes but they were one and done. They spend a lot of the game just emulating the Isles and with the refs refusal to call more than a couple of penalties they can clutch grab interfere hold slash and hit guys in the back to try to defend and slow the game down

I definitely see the Islanders comparison.

Sadly, their best goalie is a 30 year old who is only in his second full season in the NHL.

Kuemper was fine last year, but looked like he was running out of gas later in the year and that's continued to this year. He's also always injured.

The Caps brought him in to win another cup........ They haven't been good enough to win another cup since not too long after the cup they did win.

At this point the Caps are just playing to get Ovie the goals record. Watch them add something at the deadline to help with that. On some level I get it but they woukd be best served turning over the team at this point.

Wait!

A Rags/Craps game actually ended....IN REGULATION?

NO LOSER POINT????

It's a Post-Christmas/New Year's miracle!
The one yesterday between the two of them ended in regulation also.

However, Rags winning in regulation is the lesser of two evils. Yesterday was the Caps winning in regulation.

Although it’s looking more and more like the odds are catching up to the Capitals and they’re record is fading.

Detroit beats the Leafs 3 to 2 on a late 3rd period goal.

The Wing are playing good and are 6-0-1 in their last 7. They are back in playoff contention.

This situation in Toronto has me giggling lol

They are just rudderless — and will be for a while — and we’re not even a week removed from a big chunk of their fans grinning at Nylander at 11.5M as if it was a “get”

“Well it’s what happens when you have THIS MUCH TALENT…”

Samsonov back in and plays like Samsonov usually plays in 23-24.

I didn't nail him on that first goal, but that's one that might be bad...... Looked like he may have been cheating on that one.

I'm pretty sure one of the guys that knows a lot more about NHL goaltending than I do is gonna nail him on that goal.

Someone like Valiquette or Brian Boucher is probably not gonna like that goal.

As much as we don't like Valiquette, I trust him on goalie related analytics.

Devils need to keep pace with their games in hand

Don’t think I’ve ever seen this many teams in the division above nhl 500. Just one team isn’t lol.

It felt like the Atlantic was like that a month ago, where no one was below 500 and the only team in the East below or at least far below NHL 500 was Columbus.

But the wheels fell off on Buffalo and realllllyyyyy fell off on Ottawa in the last month and they’re just starting to fall off Montreal, who were treading 500 for a while.

If I had to bet the next team most likely to lose their wheels in the Metro? It’s gotta be Washington. I’ve been shredding them all year and baffled at how they’ve gotten as many points and wins as they have. Especially with a limited mobility and limited ability Ovechkin.

washington is next, yeah. only a matter of time. And the isles are right there with them by metrics, maybe worse, they're just lucky enough to run out the best goaltending in the NHL. But if Sorokin or Varly hit a cold streak they'll be underwater fast.

I’m not sure how long Varlamov is out for, but he’s injured and has been for a couple of weeks now. Unless he dressed the last game? He left the Colorado game on the 2nd of the month injured.

They’re down to Ken Appleby behind Sorokin. That’s who they’ve had listed as the backup in these games.

And I’ve pointed this out a lot, but they’ve had too good of injury luck with their goalies. I think both goalies have missed some time the last several years (Varlamov much more than Sorokin) but they’ve literally only played three goalies in the last four seasons and that was just one game.

There’s only been one game since 20-21 that neither Sorokin, nor Varlamov played in goal for them and that was when they started Cory Schneider against us that one time. They don’t even have a relief appearance from a non-Sorokin or Varlamov goalie in the last 4 seasons.

The fourth to last most recent goalie to play a game for them was Thomas Greiss in the 19-20 season. The fourth to last most recent goalie to play a game for us was Blackwood in the regular season finale last year.

I don’t even wanna count how many goalies we’ve had play a game here since 19-20.

Maybe we can rope a dope our way to the third spot in the division. I respect Philly - they’ve earned that - but I also think they’re due for a drop off.
If the Devils can withstand the stretch coming up until Jack's back, I think it's going to happen; Philly's more than over-performed expectations this season so far, but the Devils are still the stronger overall team. It's possible all the injuries just really catch up with them and some of the depth they're relying on falters if it all goes on too long, but just watching the way the Devils have played in the last couple of games has me feeling good about them weathering the storm for awhile, at least.

More than anything, a lot of teams are beginning to normalize; the Rangers are good, but never as dominant as their early record made them out to be; meantime the Devils and Hurricanes are climbing, Washington is slipping, etc. Philly is the one that sticks out, since I figured they were basement fodder this year, but I still think they're likely to drop down by the end, even if they remain competitive for a playoff spot.

I’m ready to watch the compiler choke another one away to a division rival tonight and once again not be able to pass Roy for second all time in wins lol.

I was afraid Fleury would let us down. Go get 552! (I think that's the number?) and send these f***in fish sticks back to the ocean lol.

I was also afraid Hynes would tell the boys to throw the game to screw us for firing him 5 years ago!:sarcasm:

Didn't the Islanders look about ready to sink right around this time last year? And I think that might have been when they lost Barzal for a while.

And then Lou traded for Horvat right before the all star break, which was the first big trade of the season.

I look for him to sign somewhere before the deadline, so he's eligible for the playoffs.

If he doesn't come back to play this year then I doubt he ever plays again. Brian Gionta did it in 2018 at the deadline after going to the non-NHL Olympics and Justin Williams did it a few years back at the deadline. I think Mike Fisher did it too?

Tim Thomas did take a year off around the same age, before reappearing the following season in Florida with the Panthers of all places. That was the lockout shortened season, so everyone missed close to half a season.

Tim Thomas with the Panthers (and then Dallas as the deadline after they reaquired Luongo from Vancouver) was super random.

Tim Tom's one last season will probably wind up being less memorable to Boston fans as Marty's Blues stint was for us. We all remember Marty's Blues stint, but for the wrong reasons. Because we never thought we'd see the day where he played somewhere else.

Tim Thomas was also an Islander the year he didn't play, but in cap hit only lol.
